WHAT HAPPENED TO GOOD MUSIC?

Due to the fact that it is already December, I am very pleased to begin an annual tradition :)

Is it true that you listen to this song every year?
Of course it is!

I guess this song is one of the biggest hits, one of the most recognizable songs and an annual tradition in many countries during the upcoming Christmas. It has a huge impact on our well-being during this period, and you know why?

Because this song comes from the days when people created music with passion. Of course music was always a part of great show business but the main goal of making music was music, not just business.

A well-known modern artist, Skrillex, also tried to make a song for Christmas

I have been passionate about music for many years and know how to treat a different music genre and what to expect from it. I personally like Skrillex and his songs, but I know that this attempt definitely failed him, despite the great interest in the music of this artist, whose success in the music industry is compared today to the success of the Beatles. That's because today's studios are trying to maintain a certain distance between the music and the audience, so we will not get used to one song. Music is a mass product and low cost, which is why labels want us like their music less but buy more of it, to taste the products of “deaf further money”.

Just take a look at USA Signles Top 40 list (first 7 songs):

Have you ever heard all the songs on the list?
How long will you remember these songs?

I can guess that Rihanna will release a new single next month.

Questions:
- Do you enjoy modern music as much as old classics?
- How do you imagine the future of music?
- Would you like to hear more modern music or old classics on the radio?

  1. Do you enjoy modern music as much as old classics?

I like music, but not all of its kinds of. Currently listening to: Rock, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Rap, Reggae. Modern POP or similar types somehow did not fall to my tastes.

How do you imagine the future of music?

I try to listen to music often. Mostly in the course of daily activities at home and work. I'm not freaky at the point of music, do not know much about it. Therefore, I can not imagine how the music will sound for 10 years and as for 50 years.

Would you like to hear more modern music or old classics on the radio?

In the radio when I drive I like to listen to a classic hits.

  2. Thx, for comments. So most of people would like to listen to classics, because nothing new can replace the old ones :) If you like classics, there are still some radio stations to play classic hits, i bet you know that but not everyone knows... :)

  3. I’m not able to answer the first question as these are different objects, cannot compare them this way. I like modern music but I’m sentimental about classics. I think I enjoy them both, just in different ways.
I’m sure music will go the same way fashion goes, it will get more classy again in the future.
I would like to hear modern music at the morning but classic during the night in order to chill and get sentimental before going to bed.

  4. Christmas time everyone! The spirit has arrived. Zdunek "you know you're right" with that comparison between music and fashion. It happens even right now. We hear more and more old classics accents in the songs. We are at the time when producers are even more lazy, so they won't even create any newer, modern sounding songs, so they copy styles from old ones. Which is a good thing actually, because we like the old classics.

  5. 1. Music is a big part of my life.I listen to all kinds of music depending on my mood and occasion. Therefore, I like modern as well as old classics. For me,it is all about the musician and the song.I love to listen to the songs with the meaning where the musician carefully chooses the words to tell a story. I do not have a favourite artist because there are too many good musicians to choose from, but definately value the older generation more. They play from their hearts, music is their life.
    2. I believe that music will continue changing with the new artists appearing on the market every day. Also, due to internet and YouTube many young individuals will have a bigger chance to be discovered and achieve success as it happened to Justin Bieber.Furthermore, the music scene will still be populated with one hit wonders as well as true musicians.
3.There are so many radio stations to choose from, hence,I do not complain about the type of music they play. Depending on the mood I am in,I choose the station accordingly. I believe that nowadays everyone can find the radio that matches his/ her personality.

  6. - Do you enjoy modern music as much as old classics?
I listen to music mostly modern, but not popular, I like electronic music: ambient, house, deep house, techno, disco. Sometimes I like to listen to classical music.

    - How do you imagine the future of music?
I think that certainly nothing threatens the music market, people love the music, they need it and it will not change. Over the years, tastes change, and so the music will change.

    - Would you like to hear more modern music or old classics on the radio?
I don't listen to the radio

  7. I think you should ask your question for each music genres separately. What do you mean writting modern music? Do you mean Skrillex, Rihana, Richard D. James aka Aphex Twin, or Michael Nyman?
I guess you mean pop music. Actually I do not care about it, so I do not recognize names of modern pop stars whose sing like copy and paste and I do not know whether I have been heard those songs before. Probably unfortunately yes, by the way in supermarket, in TV commercials or on the fitness, but I really do not like it.
I heard somewhere about nick name Rihanna. And also unfortunately I know that popular songs in spite of myself.
Telling the truth I mostly do not accept present main stream music, made for money and "modern" what means all in the same style, but classic are sometimes all right. I respect Madonna, Michael, Prince, Beatles and plenty of older music that performers I do not remember.
The future of the music can be different. For sure will be imagined more music genres and some of them will mix with the main steam. I do not think about big revolution in rock and classical music there will be only good or better successors and variations connected with styles combinning. In electronic will come newer equipment like synthesizers with unknown sounds and effects.
The revolution will come when scientist will connect music waves directly to our heads bypassing ears. If you have something installed in your brain you can probably stimulate it in completly new way.
I just would like to have greater diversity of radio stations in Poland. Not only commercial main steam pulp, but also minimum one jazz/blues/funk radio, hip hop radio, electronic new sound music radio. At present we have about 25 radio stations and most of them are similar. How do this poor people have to know what do they like if radio and TV propagation is focused on pop?

  8. I share your opinion. Old hits are special and unforgettable (the example with Last Christmas shows it). Since people listen to music when they get mad or happy i.e. when they get emotional about some events in their lives, and they recall their memories by turning the music on, it is immensely important to spend our time listening to moving music. Today’s market does not fulfill our need of great music that has been created with passion. Obviously this is the result of commercialism. I am not saying that all of the today’s hits are not worth listening but I want to emphasize how different from classics they are and that people may enjoy listening to them but not as much as they used to. However, this is not the case of the youngest persons. They grow up with Rihanna and other pop stars whereas they do not feel this need of better music, of classics. When it comes to the future of music… unfortunately I cannot imagine it. I mean I think that the quality of music will not improve but only get worse. Since everything is based on money, music market will focus on attracting young people who are doubtlessly the best audience. As I said- they are raised up with pop music and their attitude towards classics might be skeptical and they would not appreciate old-fashioned music on the radio. However, I must say that there are some radio stations where we can listen to old music and I am a member of their audience so it does not bother me when other stations play modern music if they are attractive for the youngest people.

  9. Music ... part of my life, in general I listen to most kinds of music, but I do not like to listen to hip-hop and rap music. I listen to music mostly by car, bus, or on the road. Also, I think that music from year to year changes, the market consists of new artists with big hits that same catchy. For example, well-known everywhere in Poland became the title song "Ona tańczy dla mnie" song sung in stadiums, clubs, pubs and people had a great fun with her. We have a lot of radio stations to choose from but I like the music on the radio RMF MAXX, ESKA, ZET, ESKA ROCK, because these radios apart fajnej music, we can win cool prizes and take part in many competitions and recover your lost love.

  10. Why one of the most popular "Christmas" song is about man with broken heart? It is strange :)

I don't realy like old classics like this one, I prefer classic music like Chopin or Bach and ofcourse Skrillex.
I think future music will exclude instruments, every song will be generated, which make me sad. It is way cheapper to push buttons than learn how to play an instrument.

I depends what classics do you mean. Classics like Modern Talking makes me sick, so I would like to hear more modern hits, but not only form europe and America! Polsh radio stations thinks only acceptable music is from USA, Great britain and Poland - sometimes.

Why there are no songs from Czech republic, Russia, Japan and such?!

  11. I like both, modern and old music, but i don't like lady gaga's and her friends music. I prefer chill out music but i'm not closed for nice new compositions. Unfortunately I think that in future we will have 10 lady gaga's and 5 justin biber's so i try to collect good music for my future. Mostly i like modern music which is remix of the old ones, but not in the POP way, but in chill or '50 party style.

  12. As a great fan of a classic hard rock I cannot agree more. I am not saying that there is nothing interesting in modern music - because what is modern music? I am saying that there is nothing interesting in the terms of music on the radio or TV. I am saying that "music" played by Lady Gaga, Rihanna and other "stars" for masses is brain-melting. Empty, simple and dull.

When I listen to blues, classic rock or even metal like good ol' Metallica - I can TASTE the music. I can feel the passion behind it. I am listening to guitar solos, great vocals, rythm section. When I go to a concert I know this is for real - no playback bull@$5#.

Also I never said that there is any particular "CORRECT MUSIC GENRE". No. Pop music can be great - I have Michael Jackson hits on my phone and I love them! Also old disco hits like those from "Night at the Roxbury" - yummy! Not to mension absolutely amazing techno/electro soundtrack from Unreal Tournament game (1999) - it's modern, but it's also a masterpiece.

Music taste is a very personal thing, however no one will ever convince me that music played on VIVA station is good and it's a metter of taste. I would say - poor taste. For a very poor music.

Anyway - what you gonna do? I just dont listen to the radio, I don't have TV - except from public places I am not forced to listen to this crap :)

    Peace.
