New level of shopping in Tesco

Nowadays the word “progress” is closely associated with technology. But there is something more to it. It is inside us, and it’s called mentality

For years, big retailers like Tesco, Auchan, Carrefour have tried to improve the quality of traditional shopping and the result was never satisfying and at some point people started to feel some discomfort resulting from frequent changes "for a change".
As we know, there were always two most famous types of shopping – online shopping
(i.e. Polish Tesco ezakupy) and traditional shopping (i.e.Tesco Hypermarkets).

The difference between traditional and online shopping:

Traditional Shopping
1.) You must carry your purchased goods
2.) You probably will have to drive or walk to the store
3.) You can see and you can touch what you want to buy, which is a good thing

Online Shopping
1.) You don’t have to carry anything.
2.) You have to wait for your goods to be delivered.
3.) You can’t touch or see the items you have purchased.
4.) There are many promotions and markdowns using different promotion cards.
5.) You can select from a wide range of assortment.
6.) There are many facilities like wish lists or wish cards.

Virtual Shops

Few years ago, Tesco, better known as Home Plus in South Korea, started a new thing which you can check in the video below:

They are called Virtual Shops and they mix traditional shopping with online shopping, which is a great

thing (I think). You can still see the assortment, so you won’t forget anything, you can buy things just with one click, you don’t have to go to the store, and your purchased item will be delivered to your home. There is still a chance, that your items can be defective.

Questions:
- Would you buy things in random places using your smartphone?
- When in your opinion will  Virtual Shops technology  be used in Poland?
- Is there any disadvantage of Virtual Shopping?

  1. Would you buy things in random places using your smartphone?

Sure it is. I like to use new technologies and check their suitability for everyday tasks. But I try to not go to extremes. At the same time, I think that one smartphone or tablet is more than enough to deal with all the issues. Shopping in the city through these devices is OK for me and I hope that sometime in my area are the shops.

When in your opinion will be Virtual Shops technology used in Poland?

In my opinion, these stores will be in the next 5 years. However, they are dedicated to a specific target group. Still remain traditional shops where you can shop, touch the product, pay and take it home.

Is there any disadvantage of Virtual Shopping?

Many people are not yet convinced to make purchases over the network. The main issue is theft of credit card numbers, or other data. In my opinion, the biggest problem is the mentality and the fear of being cheated or robbed by thieves online.

  2. I like to use new technologies in order to buy FMCG products, as Cezary does. It would definitely save my time if I can buy them at the bus stop for example. Of course, it would also cause many useless purchases. I also think, that we shouldn’t go to extremes because one day we may wake up next to artificial man or woman in our bedroom and that’s the only disadvantage for me
I think those shops will appear in next few years and it could be a huge success because there are many places that are simply boring like bus stops, bus, public toilets and I would buy something just for fun.

  3. I do like the idea of virtual shops, however, I do not think that it is for me.
I realize that in Poland from a few years now you have the option to shop online. Despite the fact that shopping online it is very convenient, I never took advantage of it! Also, I do not know anyone who does such purchases. I am afraid that it is going to be the same with the virtual shops that only few people will benefit from this (I mean the Polish people). Maybe I am wrong and there are people in Poland who shop online and wish to benefit from the options of virtual stores, yet, I do not know anyone like this. Truly, I do not think that Virtual Shops technology will be available in Poland soon.
And what about the vegetables and fruits in those types of stores? Some people take vegetables, fruits, without looking at them and finding whether they or damage, ripe etcetera. Yet, personally I like to choose my vegetables and fruits by myself. Another drawback is the growing laziness of the modern society! Shopping in the ‘normal’, ‘traditional’ stores require us to go out from our comfortable houses and do some sort of physical exercises. Unfortunately, nowadays people do not exercise a lot since most of them got sedentary works and they do not have much time or power to go to the shop, thus they might prefer to do their shopping online!

  4. s10047 thx for pointing out the vegetables problem! it really is a major problem with virtual shops, also with online shopping.
But let's try to think out of box, let's not just make changes for changes, but let's raise the level of shopping. If someone would get many defective items, like outdated articles or damaged vegetables, the standard of the whole supply chain would really raise, because shops are for people, so they have to fulfill our orders. The order is not only the quantities of items you have purchased but also the quality of service :)

  5. 1. Personally,I tend to shop online more and more nowadays. I use an app on my phone and do it while waiting for a doctor appointment or watching a movie at home. The main advantage is that I can free few hours in a day and avoid crowded supermarkets.I seem to save also money because I have more time to think and pay attention to what I buy.
    2. I think it will take a good couple of years before Poland sees the first virtual supermarket. The concept is fairly new and the virtual supermarkets only exist in few countries so far,e.g. Korea,China,U.K. The airports are the main location for the supermarkets as the retailers claim that bored travellers will be willing to shop while waiting long hours.Looking at the Polish airports,I think only Warsaw would be suitable due to its size.Yet,I do not envision it happening soon. Contrary to online shopping which we see opening new every day.
3.The main disadvantage is that virtual shops will definately eliminate the existance of local mum and pop shops. Also, people will lose the sensation of shopping when choosing the products or smelling the vegetables.Furthermore, there will be a huge cut in employment since the virtual shops will not require human assistance. To summarize,I do not think the virtual shops are such a good idea.

  6. 1. I like traditional shopping, I happen to buy products on the internet, but not food.
    2. I think that such shops in Poland appears within 10 years, but will also continue the traditional shops.
    3. Virtual shops will eliminate a lot of jobs, which is a big drawback. Many people still are not convinced to buy online, people are afraid to cheats online

  7. It is great idea! You don't have to carry buyed things, secondly your shop is next to you! You don't have to think about going to the shop, the shop is next to you :) It would be better, but probably more costly, if there where LCD pannels, which would allow you to interact with it.
I don't think polish market could be replaced by Virtual Shops technology, because in Poland people like to stay in lines on Sunday ;) In my opinion Poles would not trust such thing.

The main disadvantage of Virtual Shopping is that you spend more money, you don't see "real" products in your shopping cart and that is why is it easer to put by click another thing.

  8. 1) Recently, more and more I'm trying to use online shopping because I do not have too much time to walk around the shops and standing in huge queues. Now also when preparing the Christmas season, often going to use this type of shopping, will save time because you can spend on other things.

2)In Poland, the development of such technologies may take from a few to klikunastu years, why? because in Poland there are not too many people involved in e-business, few people are willing to technology development, but also because older people do not really know the use of computers, which can block the development of this technology for a long period of time.

    3) There are many disadvantages of such stores such as:

    - Older people do not know how to use computers
    - We can not check the expiration date of the product
    - We can not choose the meat, the choice is made the seller
    - When buying vegetables and fruits can not check whether it is a mature

  9. In my opinion virtual shops are not likely to be introduced in the near future. I actually think that people, especially in Poland, are too close with traditional shopping. They want to touch things before they decide to purchase them. It is proved by scientists that people feel the need of touching products to be more sure of their quality. I think that virtual shopping will be common and usual for the next generations, but now I do not see any room for them. Even online shopping is not as popular as it could be in today’s world. Apparently, people prefer traditional ways of purchasing goods. I think that in my case, I would be willing to decide to change the way of shopping for the virtual one but I do not consider it as crucial. Obviously it saves our time and lets us wait for the products to be delivered at home but I think that laziness of the society is already too visible for this kind of facilities. Older people find it entertaining to go to the shop once a week, looking for new bargains. There are some who limit themselves to shopping and do not find anything different worth leaving home. Also some of our grandparents- If they did not have to go to the shop, they would spend their whole time at home which would damage their health and lead to worse physical condition. These are disadvantages of virtual and online shopping. Concluding, I admire the development of technology, especially in Korea, and I like the idea of virtual shopping but before introducing it worldwide, I would consider the drawback that I have mentioned, and after taking them into account decide whether this kind of facility is worth our attention.

  10. I don't like this idea. I like to "feel" the product. I cannot smell the virtual apple or orange. I can only see it's photo on the display. Also - I don't know how the real apple will look like - pictures are always beautifull, when reality turns out to be more harsh.

It's all about money. Less people are needed to take care of merchandise. No staff to put products on shelfs. Less space. Less energy. MORE PROFIT.

I just like to actually see the food before buying. To see the color of beer in the bottle, to check fruits if they're fine, etc. However Korean people are known of their atitude towards technology and gadgets. As they say "To get married with a Korean girl you first need to beat her father in 'StarCraft'."

I like technology, but there should be a limit at some point.
