Broadsheets vs Tabloid

WHAT TO BELIEVE?

Mass media provides us with lots of information whilst we are not always able to distinguish between those which are reliable and those which are totally not worth our attention. Obviously, it is one of the most important sources of second-hand knowledge, apart from television and the internet. Probably, most of you have already experienced being provided with some stories which turned out to be untrue later on. Newspapers which are based on sensationalism are called tabloids. The opposite of them are broadsheets. Experienced and well-educated citizens are rather able to see the difference, but unfortunately it is sometimes hard to explain to young people the fact that newspapers are not always a reliable source of information. What is more, some of them are biased i.e. they say what they want, not what they should.

a short comparison of a tabloid and a broadsheet

Format

"Broadsheet refers to the most common newspaper format, which is typically 11 to 12 inches wide and 20 or more inches long. In the technical sense, tabloid refers to a type of newspaper that typically measures 11 X 17 inches and is five columns across, narrower than a broadsheet newspaper. Since tabloids are smaller, their stories tend to be shorter than those found in broadsheets."

The Most Significant Differences

What distinguishes them the most is the coverage- tabloids’ coverage is most sensational, trying to draw the audience’s attention, usually presenting a dramatic picture. In broadsheets the copy takes up almost the whole space of the coverage. Furthermore, tabloids’ aim is not to provide the audience with important information but to fulfill their desire for sensation while broadsheets are mostly informative, giving us some details of the stories and are more objective. The next difference is that the copy is much shorter in tabloids than in broadsheets as the audience is different. Well-educated people have longer attention span and are more likely to understand longer and more detailed texts. This is the reason for the language being more formal in broadsheets. When it comes to headlines, it is worth noticing that tabloids are willing to make the headlines as dramatic as possible, usually giving exaggerated information. Even letters are much bigger in tabloids. Everything to catch our attention.

Now, can you see these differences in the pictures below?

Questions to discuss:

  • Can you see the differences between tabloids and broadsheets in Polish newspapers? Which are the most reliable?

  1. Information is the price ... A lot of people buy newspapers to make the current TV program. Others are looking for in these rumors or news topic from the world of economics and law and others are buying them just to find something to read.
Personally, I do not read newspapers paper, I prefer information portals where you can find more information in one place.
In newspapers and on the internet portals way of presenting information and opinions expressed by the author very often shows his attitude to the world and to the political side is more favorable. So that the same information is presented in a different way and the world is screwed at the moment when it is made to more and more new customers. Often, a simple being published may affect the development of companies, stock prices or directions in which governments conduct their political activities.

In this topic you can see a lot of thanks to the internet. Access to information and social networking enables rapid exchange of views and to influence the decisions of others. I think now more people read the information on a computer than in a newspaper.

There remains the question concerning the reward to release information access on the network. Some news portals implements systems to share content via one-time fee or a subscription to access content. This is probably the direction in which much of the intended release information sources. I believe that some still remain unpaid.

  2. If I get a newspaper It's usually Tabloid because of its entertaining side. I also love to watch the monkey business
made in our and other parliaments. This is the only reason I am paying broadcast license every month. I dont want to see
serious politics on TV news because the important deals are made behind the curtains and should stay there.

Of course, If I want to know what's happaning all over the world I use internet broadsheets(Washington post etc) and "independent" services.

  3. Personally i don't read any news that's on paper. I don't know, maybe i'm weird or just a kid
of the new generation but i really prefer click-and-read more than traditional paper. Why do i? The answer is simple - i don't believe
in what they write there. This must really suck (sorry...) when someone reads the newspaper (let's say 1 or 2 different) and it is the only source of the information for that person, because TV does not count, i don't believe even more the guy in TV who is highly skilled to tell us, we will all burn in three days, with smile on his face (go figure, WTC 9/11 news...). I like when i have a choice between tons of many sources which i can check to confirm the other informations, it is fast and easy to use - The Internet. Nowadays people are so scared of some kind of power, or maybe a group of empowered people to rule the world like Illuminati. No one can proove that there isn't or is such organization, but i am certain that not many of people knows that there is something like social programming which is the part of social engineering which is a social science, and it is all about manipulating people's mind to change their way of thinking, and it's happening right now.
Oh there is a second question about polish newspaper... are you mad?! There is no such thing. I wouldn't dare to name "newspaper" these copied-pasted-translated, sheets of paper with text printed on it.

  4. 1. As stated by the author, there are different types of the newspaper on the market. Every type of news is reported differently depending the source and the writer. Hence, when I read NY Times or Gazeta Wyborcza I tend to believe the writer especially if the topic such as current affairs or global issues. On the other hand, when the article is about famous people and their personal lives,I totally ignore it.It is not even worth reading.
    2. There is a big difference between broadsheet and the tabloid. The broadsheet focuses on providing people with the newest facts and information, whereas the tabloid focuses on gossip and altered truth. I read and at the same time respect writers of Gazeta Wyborcza and Rzeczpospolita but can't stand tabloids like Fact which only spreads the gossip. However, everyone has the right to choose and read what she/ he likes.

  5. I don't read newspapers anymore, just browse through their webpages and have some RSS feeds subscribed. Internet is way faster and better source of infromation these days and believing just one source infromation is not enough.
Content aggregators come handy in this matter, places where you can immediately find important information from various sources and eaisly verify them are the future of journalism, technology makes it difficult to hold to just few sources.
Another interesting thing about internet is possibility of immediate feedback, commenting and high quality media. These things make traditional media (newspapers, radio & TV) obsolete.

  7. I don't read them so there is nothing to belive or not :) I'm realy not interested in reading it because they are one big commercial for me. There is no way to interact or talk to the author, in the internet you can comment or read other people opinion. So this is way better than reading simple paper article.

  8. I personally do not buy newspapers, sometimes I read in a coffee shop when I'm waiting for someone or how I get bored and I do not what to do. Personally, I think that the newspapers do not write the truth and proclaim the truth as well as TV, all this is just to use the information to manipulate the whole of society, that no one know what the truth is.

  9. Nowadays, fewer and fewer people are reading print newspapers; it is because of the fact that online newspapers are not only free but also more available. Indeed, in the modern world it has become easier and cheaper to do media with digital technology. Because of the rapid development of digital journalism, we now have so many choices of news sources, like online newspapers or even blogs, which allow everyone to become a journalist. Moreover, in the modern digital world the information has quickly become a commodity – product for sale.  Since with the introduction of the computers to the newsroom there was an explosion of information (news), the media had to start making different sorts of priorities.  Therefore, now all media, including newspapers, started to make different kind of priorities to maximize the profit and minimize the cost. Thus, I do not truly trust both print and online newspapers, because I believe that the modern media mainly care about their profit, and because of that they started to loose their credibility.

Broadsheets tend to be more credible than tabloids, since tabloids and online ‘gossip’ sites, such as pudelek.pl, are blurring the lines between journalism and opinionated writing, and it is just wrong. However, as I mentioned before, I believe that all modern media – including tabloids and broadsheets – are all about maximizing the profit and minimizing the cost.  Therefore, they only provide the information that people will be interested with and can be easily sold.  Because of that I think that none of them are really reliable
