Studying Abroad

Nowadays young people in order to get a decent job have to try their best to acquire as much knowledge as possible. They have a great access to schooling in developed countries. However, children e.g. from Africa are often forced to stay at home and work as incomes of the families are insufficient to maintain high standard of living while paying for the education.

What does encourage people to apply for studies abroad?

1. Studying abroad is the best way to gain some experience and fluency in speaking foreign languages. As we all know, foreign languages are undoubtlessly one of the most important criterion when it comes to deciding whether or not to hire someone in a big company, where the competition is rather big. While studying abroad we can learn how to use a language in every possible circumstances which might turn out to be most beneficial in the future.

2. Studying abroad gives us the opportunity to visit some distant parts of the world. It goes without saying that people cannot know different cultures without spending some time in other countries. Living abroad makes us more conscious of how other nations live, what problems they meet and what their traditions are.

3. It improves your self-confidence as you have to force yourself to fit in a society. Since you are in another country, you can start a new life, try to change your behavior and not being ashamed anymore- no one knows you there! It might be most exciting and developing.

4. Since you have to adapt to another culture, you also have to make new friends and find someone who will be there for you when you have a problem to resolve or you are stuck in a hopeless situation. You will meet people from other countries! This gives you the opportunity to make contacts, which might turn out to be beneficial in the future. (As I mentioned before, it also provides you with the opportunity to enhance your language skills, especially when your new friends are native speakers of e.g. English).

5. Studying abroad enables you to gain some information about yourself! Probably, you have never had such an opportunity i.e. you have never been in a situation where you HAD TO handle a problem and there was no other way. While studying abroad you are given a chance to find yourself in very difficult situations of your everyday life. Some people come back from distant places totally changed i.e. with some altered concepts or perceptions, new ideas, unforgettable experiences.

6. Since you live in another country and study there, you are obviously more informed of what is going around the world than people who stay in their countries for their whole lives (excluding holidays or other short-time trips). Migration just enriches your worldview!

7. Aren’t you tired of your daily routine? Studying abroad gives you a great deal of opportunities to escape your everyday life. As far as it goes, you can find some motivation, inspiration etc. while meeting new people from different nations and being exposed to some interesting situations. What is more, you can benefit from unusual courses which are not taken in your country of the origin.

8. What encourages people the most? Of course, these are the opportunities for better wages. In our globalized world, it happens that employers strive to find just ‘perfect’ candidates for the posts that they offer. Graduates from around the world are obviously very motivated, well-educated, experienced and multi-lingual which means they are the most likely to get a decent job (a very important factor during the time of crisis).

Here you can watch a film about studying abroad:

Why to study abroad?

In the past, studying abroad was not that accessible. Today, young people can benefit from:

  • Financial help for pre-eminent youngsters (sometimes universities pay for everything- fee, accommodation, food, books etc.)
  • Universities willing to admit immigrants (it enriches country’s cultural background)
  • Access to the internet (they can talk to their families as if they lived together)
  • Improved transport (it is possible to visit the country of origin very often)

Discussion questions:

  • Have you ever wanted to go study abroad? If yes, what stopped you?
  • Do you think it has any disadvantages? If yes, what are they?
  • In your opinion or experience how are treated Polish people in other countries? Are they welcomed?

  1. Studying abroad is a very interesting idea. I never had the opportunity to take advantage of this form of study. I've heard many good things about this form of study, the following three main aspects:
    1. Getting to know other languages ??in the future so that our competitiveness in the labor market will be much larger.
    2. We meet other people and a new culture. Many people who have been successful in business have open minds and a lot of traveling. Through learning new things open up our eyes and we can look at some of the problems differently. A contacts gained during these trips are often kept for years and can help us in the least expected moment.
    3. We study and do the same thing we did in Poland :)
From what I know there are some programs that offer trips abroad during the study or during the holiday period. One of the most recognizable in Poland and Europe's Erasmus.
Personally, I used to take advantage of this form of study.

  2. Bonjour, si étudier à l'étranger est une bonne idée?
Yes it is, because it is fun. You can meet alot of interesting people and learn alot from their everyday's life rules etc... I think this is very developing, like you have mentioned and i would agree with most of your article. I think this is all clear what you wrote. Answering one of your questions i'd like to study abroad just to experience other cultures, languages and meet interesting people, also make contacts but that's all. I feel sorry for all the people who thinks that studying abroad gives them something "more" which any of employer would appreciate. It really depends on what kind of job you are looking for but in my opinion, as we are all involved in IT, studying abroad is just some developing fun, and i think that this is not the better alternative for student, and not better epxerience than studying in Poland. First of all if student wants to be a professional, there is no chance he will be treated like a pro in any other country than his country of origin. This is your 25 years of experience! Remember, you always lived there and you know best what are the main problems in your country, and what could you do to make this country better, also you know the market, you know the rules, the system, you know probably much more than you know about any other country in this world. Learning things about i.e. US that you know about Poland, would take next 20 years. And there is the part, where i'd like to say of course you can work worldwide, you should know more than 1 language, you should make contacts, but you always will be "a professional from Poland" which is good if you are IT guy, because we get much respect over the world. But not try to make this fake "american dream", it will never happen, and trust me it is much better to work as a polish professional and be outsourced to US for a project than trying to imitate US guy. I'd really like to know your opinions, because this is very interesting. Don't hate me for that guys :-) but really, i'd like to work with you in future, not the indian guy, who works for a bowl of soup because you leaved the country.

  3. Studying abroad is an excellent tool available nowadays for students. Many Universities and even some High School provide exchange programmes for their students, often offering more than one country to choose from.Studying abroad allow young people to learn the language, observe new culture, meet new friends, and become independent. Personally,I always wanted to do it,yet,my High School unfortunately did not offer this possibility. Studying abroad is a fantastic tool which everyone should take advantage of where possible.
2.Studying abroad can be exciting as well as challenging for some. For many, especially the younger students being away from home, somewhere where everything is new and different, can be a major obstacle. The fear of unknown and homesickness are the main disadvantages. However,if one can overcome it,the outcome will be rewarding.
    3. Personally,I do not think Polish students are treated in any other way than others when studying abroad. At the same token,I dont think foreign students are treated badly when studying in Poland. Everyone who signs up for an exchange programme has the same goal in mind;he/she wants to learn the language and get familiar with the customs in a given country.

  5. I was thinking about studying in the United States, but that was just waaay to expensive. And I had our great school right in my hometown. However it's still my plan B, maybe not for school now but I can still leave for work there, it's still quite tempting.
Polish people are treated abroad like most of slavic countries citizens, I haven't seen anything different. We're kind of lucky to have that stereotype of hard working and hard drinking people, that helps in living abroad a lot.

  6. I think that everyone who can should go and study some time abroad. Even for one semester.

It's helping people to be more open-minded. To see how people live in other countries.

Of course it could be dangerous for demography in Poland, because people would be more willing to move to the other country. Especially when there are a lot more opportunities to live on higher level.

I wanted to study some time abroad, but couldn't make it. I couldn't afford it and now I'm studying part time and work the rest time so it's not possible.

I was working some time in the Netherlands during the vacations and it was great experience.

In the Netherlands I wasn't treated form locals like I'm different or something. I hadn't even once experience some hate or wrong attitude due to my polish origin.

  7. I haven't ever wanted to study abroad I think Polish schools are good, so there is no reason to study somewhere else. I haven't ever considered it so I don't know if it have disadvantages. In my opinion it depends on country and on people. In England which now if full of Polish people, we could have bad opinion from the begining, but for exemple in Korea or Japan people could treat good because of for example Chopin, Wałęsa etc

  8. Studying in another country can have a huge benefit in the future! The biggest reason that studying abroad is good for our education, is that it will expose us to a different way of doing things (it's also so much more than "just" an education).

I wanted to study abroad. My father lives in Amsterdam, I had my chance but I didn't take it. Unfortunately I was too scared, and I'm not ashamed of it. It means that I wasn't ready yet, but I'm perfectly sure that I'm gonna make it happen one day. :)

I found only one disadventage, studying abroad can be really expensive.

I heard from my friends (trusted source) that they are treated very well, just like any other student.

  10. Before I started studying in Poland for Polish Japanese had plans to go to Canada to learn English and start well in college education there, but my plans are thwarted. A friend who suggested that I may dwell in the house who lives just a holiday suddenly sold it and found out that I have no place to live and also all who should go well with me, and gave up my plans came to nothing.
I think that studying abroad does not have flaws, at the beginning can be hard because you do not know anyone, and we're all alone, but the beginnings are always hard.
Poles are fairly well treated abroad, are considered to be party games, and open-minded people.

  11. Once I thought about going on exchange under the Erasmus Programme, however, I ended up just thinking about it… I don’t like travelling alone, so I believe that the main reason why I decided not to go on this student exchange programme was that I have no friends who would like to join me. Also, in my opinion, there is only one disadvantage of going for studying overseas and it is missing your family and friends. Since, I am really close to both my family and friends I cannot image leaving them for even half a year.

Moreover, I believe that you need a lot of courage to go to study abroad by yourself, yet, I have one person in my family who got this courage, and it is my little sister Kasia, who has been studying overseas for over 4 years now. Just after graduating from her high school she decided to go to Australia to study both English and Business. After one year of living and studying in Sydney, she got accepted to University of Toronto in Canada.  However, since the beginning she didn’t like Canada since, as she says, is too ‘cold’ and ‘boring’ for her. Therefore, after first year of her undergraduate studies, in spite of my parents' disapproval, Kasia decided to transfer to the different university. Now, she is studying at University of Nottingham in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and finally she is happy with her studies, not only because she loves to live in Asia but also she likes her university and program of study.

When I asked her about how Polish people are treated in Canada, Australia and Malaysia, she said that she have never experience any troubles abroad and she has always felt welcome in all of those countries.  However, most people in Malaysia do not know that Poland exists; they always confuse Poland with Holland, and that always gets her really angry.

  12. I think that people should study where they would like to live because they get to know how particular market is behaving. Of course studing abroad may be fun and extremely useful but only to look up some new ideas and processes that might be adoptable into your own habitat.

I would like to go abroad for a year to see how business works there and then come back or stay there for ever otherwise it doesn't really make sanse unless you are into travells or cultures profesionally.

I think that in some countries Polish people are treated badly because of stereotype present in there, which of course has its grounds. It is because most Polish that went abroad, are the ones who didn't make it here and were, in some way, forced to live their country. They are now doing some hard phisical job or illegal stuff.
