The IKEA Phenomenon

In 1943 a young entrepreneur Ingvar Kamprad opened his first shop after receiving some money from his father for good grades in school. Being 17 at the time, he had already had a selling experience, a few years earlier he had discovered the basic principle of business by distributing matches around his neighborhood.  He found out he could buy large amounts of matches in Stockholm at a lower price and resell them for a good price and still keep a fine profit. Initially he was selling random products at his store and in 1948 he added locally produced furniture. The business started to go very well and in 1951 he started the distribution of the IKEA mail-order catalogue. In 1956 he spotted he could save money and space by adding the option of home-assembly. In 1958 Kamprad opened his first furniture dedicated store. From that point everything was going pretty quickly: 1963 - first store outside of Sweden (in Norway), 1973 - first store outside of Scandinavia (Switzerland), 1975 - Australia and Hongkong, reaching Poland in 1991, China in 1998; over 300 stores in 44 countries in 2011. Ingvar Kamprad, now in his eighties, was placed that year as 11th wealthiest person in the world with a fortune estimated at $23 billion. What's interesting, Poland is the second supplier of IKEA stores around the world, right behind China. What made Swedish company so successful?

Typical IKEA shop
Design: Plain and simple
IKEA furniture resemble the Scandinavian way of design: they're simple, minimalistic, functional and beautiful, but still affordable for masses, everyday objects. Most of them use low cost materials (mainly plastic) and form-pressed wood which helps to keep the price low.

There's no better example of IKEA style than "Lack" table.

Stores: Friendly for customers
Starting with his first store, Ingvar wanted to take care of his customers. He invented in-store restaurants and play area (Småland) to leave kids while parents could easily go shopping. This made his store a very friendly place for families. Customers didn't leave his shop exhausted, which made them willing to come back. After some time, food served in IKEA has become iconic in the same way as any other product in the store - by being simple and tasty, famous Köttbullar or cheap Hot-Dogs for many were convincing enough to visit the furniture store only to eat something.

One of IKEA bestsellers in Poland

Prices: Low
By keeping his prices low  (prices in the catalogue were guaranteed for a year after its release)IKEA  quickly earned the name of an affordable furniture shop, combined with its characteristic design and iconic durability: IKEA’s products sold well.

The IKEA Effect
Recently published studies have revealed people have a tendency to overrate products which involved their work. That is, if a person had put some effort into assembling a table, even from prepared elements, he would value it more than an identical table made by a factory. Even making a pie out of prepared mixed ingredients by just adding some eggs would make that pie much more attractive (and tasty) than buying the same product prepared for us by someone else.

Advertising: Clever, honest and non intrusive
Everyone knows the IKEA catalogue, in Sweden the day of its release is an annual event as significant as  national holidays and many Swedes have a sticker on their letterboxes saying "No advertising - thank you, but the IKEA catalogue with pleasure". Even the last controversy concerning the removal of  women from the Middle-East version of the catalogue got huge publicity.

Typical commercials are also simple and clever, I am sure everyone still remembers their TV ads:

Or recent series "Ty tu urządzisz".

Other important aspect of advertising is the product presentation in the store, the same product is presented in different arrangements. All without screaming titles and crazy descriptions.

Tradition
The company used its Swedish origin to  build its image and help to gain trust among customers. Using single Scandinavian words to name  its products didn't always work out as expected due to their unfortunate connotations, for example:
  • a"Jerker" desk
  • "Fukta" plant spray
  • a"Fartfull" workbench

Unexpectedly for IKEA this product quickly gained attention in USA without any advertising.

Questions:
1. What do you think of IKEA products, their design and prices?
2. Do you happen to shop in IKEA or prefer other places? Why?

  1. I love IKEA products! They are so simple and cheap. Some of them are not durable, but I think they are designed "for now" not for many years. I like to go there to just watch some expositions and be inspired by them. Usually I am delighted that they can create so magic and usefull room at for example 25m^2.

I like their catallogue, it always contains simple but beautifull expositions. Do you know that about 25% of pictures in it will be created by "most of us" ;) I mean programmers and graphic designes! They will be rendered.
What do you think about it? Is it "cheating" for you?

  2. I am a fan of Ikea stores network, I love to do shopping at ikea, I like this place, but rather visit them a week, if I have this opportunity. On the weekend Ikea is crowded with people, whole families go shopping, or sometimes only come for dinner. I like the minimalist furniture, that is why I really like ikea furniture. A year ago I moved to a new apartment, it was empty, so I decided to decorate them ikea furniture, due to appearance, price and quality. If it comes to eating at ikea I recommend only hot dogs and ice cream. Unfortunately, after the dinner dishes from ikea I always feel bad.

  3. 1. No matter where you are in the world, the name Ikea rings a bell. Everyone knows it and most of us have something from Ikea in our household. Ikea offers affordable products which are easy to assemble and nice looking. The products might not be the best quality, but on the other hand what is nowadays if everything comes with the label "made in China". With Ikea you know what to expect and how long it will last. The shops are user-friendly with the famous room displays which help if you are not too creative and need an inspiration. It is a perfect place to shop when you decorating your first place and you are after quantity not quality. Moreover, let's not forget about the famous Swedish meatballs with the cranberry sauce which is a great reward for a day of shopping.
    2. Do you shop at IKEA?
Personally,I like Ikea for small items like kitchen utensils or decorations, but try not to buy large items such as furniture. Not only you have to carry the heavy pieces, but also spend a lot of time to assemble it. Once done, the furniture seems fine as long as you keep it in the same place without moving. When the piece of furniture is moved, the problems start.Suddenly the screw is missing or the item is crooked. I like to shop at Ikea comparing to other stores because of the open space, easy accessible toilets, baby stations, and the restaurant. Kudos to the inventor and his brilliant ideas.

Must apperciate the luxury of buying things that are well done, well designed, and not expensive. It's rere these days. And by well designed I mean siple as hell.
Although I really like Ikea's furniture, I wouldn't be glad if my whole apartment would look like one's from the catalogue. I love to scavenge trough the small markets for something unique.

I love eating at ikea whenever i go to shop there! Food is worth more than its price! Delicious!

I also think that the shop is ideal for equipment, his home at the lowest price, IKEA offers a very good quality products at a price accessible to everyone. It may be noted that at this time, more people are throwing up their abode in these chain stores. Personally, I recommend to all, however, warn that shopping on the weekends tend to be awfully tiring, because everyone in your free time just visiting these shops.

  6. Firstly I would like to say that I love success-stories and I love IKEA!

I think the relation between price and design is simply perfect. At the first sight you can see that the whole IKEA idea
comes from passion. The customer service is something that they are not ignoring which is great as nowadays almost everyone is focusing on lowering prices rather than making the quality higher.

They do things different which, connected with a good business model and logistics, is an enormously powerfull way of doing business. Altough the middle-east version case was a faux-pas(for me it was funny as hell but...), I agree that their marketing is nearly pefect.

I do IKEA shopping as often as I need something to my appartment, it is perfect form me, maybe because I'm a simple man. I like their minimalistic design. We should all learn from this IKEA case how the business should be done no matter what line of it you're representing.

  7. I will not be breaking through. I like ikea for simplicity and minimalism. Ikea for me it's a great business model. Ikea noticed that you do not need glamor vendor that the product is loved. Just put on practicality and success is guaranteed. Simplicity is one hell of a business point of view is the production price advantage. Low cost of production gives us an advantage over our competitors and customers feel that they do not overpay. This flywheel has been running for a few good years in the market and from what I remember is the founder of ikea three richest man in the world is said to be a clear success. One thing I do not like the feeling of being in a market where we have an impersonal company huddle together with other consumers. Well, but even in spite of this fact, ikea is a phenomenon for me.

  8. Products that can be bought at these stores are characterized by an interesting yet simple design and reasonable prices. IKEA stores came into the Polish market in the relevant time and gave access to good quality products for a wide range of clients.
Furniture and accessories manufactured by this company are very specific, the design is recognizable and in my opinion is not repeatable. A lot of their products at low prices is really functional making it a good alternative in the segment of furniture available to all.
Currently looking for furniture for a new apartment, and certainly IKEA will be one of the first stores in which I will spend more time. I hope that my research will be completed successfully and furnished apartment will not be monotonous.

  9. A short anecdote before I will present my opinion :) Once I have visited one Laos village I have met a retired IKEA employee. If I good remember he was an accountant in this huge corporation. In about half an hour he has precised me his interesting life. Inter alia he has given up work at IKEA to become a lecturer in Laos and told me why it has that name. These are just initials and first letters of his name and a place where the founder grew up, namely, Ingvar Kamprad from Elmtaryd farm near his hometown Agunnaryd. Now you can also find this story on Wikipedia :) I did not know about origins of the name IKEA and because partly I invent names at my work it was interesting news for me. It is fascinating how a simple name has become a globally recognized trademark.
I think everyone likes this company, at least I do not know anyone, but I am sure everybody here has minimum one item from IKEA ;P
Skandinavia is known for a good design, not just furniture, also graphics. Products from there are modern, practical and nice, but most importantly cheap. It is perfect solution for students, so my room in 95 precent comes from IKEA and in 5 precent form JYSK. This second market with interior equipement is not so crouded and is often closer as well because IKEAs are usually very big and located on the peripheries.
However, like in every supermarket I always buy more than I planned :(

  10. As it appears to me the most crucial reason for IKEA’s customers is the fact that the prices are very encouraging. For example people who move constantly i.e. they change their apartments, usually while buying something for their new places but they take into consideration the fact that their life style makes them move a lot and that they will have to leave the furniture that they have bought so the prices must be really low for those people to buy something. What is more, IKEA furniture is really ‘simple’ and this is what people look for in today’s world. Of course, I agree with all of the reasons mentioned in the presentation but prices, minimalism and advertisements I consider as the most significant. My personal experience with buying furniture is that I go to every shop I know to decide where the thing that I search or is the most convenient. IKEA is always one of these shops because there is an array of furniture. Concluding, I think that the fact that IKEA succeeded I justified and its winning streak will last for a long time.
