  1. My fathers has a gun at home. We all new about it, and to kill our curosity, he took us shooting once, in deep woods. Then we realized, that this thing is reeeeeaaaaalllllyyyyyy dangerous.... but he thought us how to use it, how to block etc, so if we would ever face another kid playing with a gun, we would be able to take it to a safety.
After that I took few shooting lessons, with a variety of weapons. But it doesn't mean, that I wan't to shoot everyone. It's just to know, how to use it. Not just in case. Just like that.
So I don't think, that it's such a good idea, to have a gun, that you have no idea how to use it. I will never have such one in my home even though, I do know how. But I also know, that this thing can be very easly be used AGAINST me. As it is so many times in the US.

  2. First of all - Wanda, I'm not sure if you can post stories about illegal activity here... :D

But back to the presentation, I'm glad someone wrote about this topic. Recent establishment of Libertarian Party in Poland passed with the echo of huge controversy regarding their political program, which considers not only the full social freedom of citizens, but also its parts that remained forgotten in our country for ages. Not many people think about it while studying history, but the gun law was making our ancestors pretty proud of it. It was a normal part of our lives, just like in US right now.

Of course there was and will be more accidents. Still, more people dies in car accidents than in gunfights, even in US.

Knowing all that, I'm still 100% sure that legalizing guns all of a sudden is a bad idea. Polish people (and people from countries where guns are banned in general) are not prepared for this. However, this situation can change with a rightful dose of public education and good amount of time...

  4. Firstly, in country like Poland, where people love to drink and do stupid things after that, free access to weapons is generally bad idea. It should be reserved only for particular people, that proved they are responsible for carrying a gun and that wouldn't use it in wrong way. I cannot imagine behaviour of for example police during routine control when there is highly possible that person being checked has a gun. Maybe crimes like assault or robbery would become less frequent but in other hand there would come respectively more other serious problems.

  5. The USA example gives us a point of reference as to the possibility of having a gun in Poland. I think we are't responsible enough to give us the tools of crime legal. Also in the U.S. there is a cult of weapons is due to the history. Also, responsibility and punishment for killing is different in the USA. In Poland we have a problem with peaceful marches, what would happen if people in balaclava, the nationalists had guns too?
In Poland we have a problem with the law because if you catch a burglar and do something to him. He can sue you for bodily injury.
Many had to change in us and in the law that could legalize possession of weapons by people.

  6. I'm not sure about allowing citizens to have a gun in Poland is a good idea. It's enough we have "dresiarze" with bare hands and baseball bats ;-)

But in all seriousness, I am glad a very serious issue was raised - self -defense rights in Poland.
Imagine this - you are assaulted by a few bad guys who are up to no good. They have knives. You have a bigger knive and you harm them in self defense, protecting you and maybe your family from the worst.
If you are successful in protecting yourself, YOU are suffering from legal consequences and perhaps going to jail for defending yourself with a "better" weapon. This is unbelievably ridiculous and annoying to think about. People can die, get raped, robbed, and the criminal might never be found. If you protect yourself, however, and report it, you will go to jail for doing so if you have means to do it. Crazy!
