Week 7: Technology

It is enough for us to look back in time to see how quick our technology developed. Only few years back there were no such things like computers and the internet. Computers and electronics started to develop in 1950. This date is very important because that year people were introduced to the concept of the internet for the very first time. Back then, it did not mean a lot.

The Internet was invented in 1957. Internet creators did not know that this invention would revolutionise the industry, and the way that people live. Today we can state that it was something that has changed the world.

Technology changes the way we live and work. It allows us to complete our tasks easier with help of software and pre-programmed hardware tools. In last few years robotic engendering has become more popular than ever before. Robotics is the branch of technology that deals with the design, construction, operation, and application of robots, as well as computer systems for their control, movement, sensory feedback, and information processing for programmed hardware. Robot is a mechanical or virtual agent usually it is combination of electro-mechanical pre-programmed machines which is build to perform some functions.

Have you ever heard of ASIMO the robot created by HONDA or BigDog by Boston Dynamics? Those are examples of two advance and very different kinds of robots. Can you think of any future use for those mechanic creations? How do you think those projects will look like in next 100 years?

What would the world look like if there would be no internet?
Can you imagine people being assisted by robots in everyday tasks at home and work?
Are you aware of any other developing technology that could revolutionise the world in next century?
How will the future look like in next 200 years?

  1. Well, I cannot say, how the future will look like in 200 years, because we were so wrong so many times, just telling how the future would look like in 50 years....
And so, for another question: it's hard for me to imagine world without internet, but I do remember it very well. I do remember playing outside, rather than inside, even if it was raining, or -20 degrees. I Remember my parents working without internet.
It facilitates so many things, but also is veeeery addictive. And that's just sad :/
I cannot imagine world with roots everywhere even though, they are almost everywhere, but in a different form. I'm still a little bit affraid of a BattleStar Galactica or Matrix outcome, ha ha ha!

  2. what a horrible agonizing, what would happen if there was no internet. Honestly, I can't imagine that.
For 200 years we will definitely be more dependent on computers than now. we still have a mechanical world. Reality around us is still controlled by man, assisted by computer.

The world of the future will look like world n the movie Minority report:

The only fear that is associated with the progress of computerization of the world there is a possibility to reverse the role.

It may be in the near future that humans are just a pawn in the world of artificial intelligence.

  3. A lot of questions :) Robot dog shows how fast technology is being involved nowadays, it's hard to imagine how it will work in next even few years. Today, without internet every normal, everyday process associated for example with work would take much more time and effort. About robots in home and work - actually they assist people even now. Every useful machine is some kind of robot, some usual actions like preparing coffee are automated by some primitive types of robots. Beside that we have computers which are more advanced. I have no idea how world will look in next 200 years, probably technology will be so developed till this time that unimaginable events from science fiction movies will become normal and common

  4. It’s hard to predict what technology will look like in 10 years. I remember that few years back personal computers had the processing power of current smartphones. Technology is evolving extremely fast as there is a constant race between the company’s and massive amounts of money are to be made as everybody wants to have up to date devices at home.
I have to agree with PrzemekM, I believe that the future will be like the of the Minority report. It is already somewhat becoming real as we have cameras recording everything and even automatically recognizing and classifying incidents. And robots will be a part of our lives for sure.

  5. The internet is, at the same time, the greatest and the worst thing that happened to humanity. It did improve human lives, at least in the aspect of fast communication, but on the other hand it is one of the reasons that personal relations became neglected. Without the internet the life of an ordinary human wouldn’t be as easy as it is today but the people wouldn’t be so incapacitated. Many things couldn’t be taken care of so fast so people would have to pay more attention to the things they do. Robots could have the same impact as the internet. I can’t imagine human life being any more dehumanized. I’ve heard about an invention that is able to implement human mind into a computer which could function even after the death of the body. I think that with the pace the technology is evolving, in 200 years the world as we know it will not exist.

  6. That would be great, robots to help us in evrything, but... there are I, robot - movie, where robots starts to decide what is the best for people, even if this mean to terrorize them!
Another vision is present in chobits, there are computer/robots loks like normal people, it really can replace people. Main character is girl robot who try find something - love, thing whith are forbidden to robots. They shouldn't know that kind of expression.
I really enjoy reading this manga.
We shouldn't forget about japaneese seal - paro. Robot to show love, help people, threating people.
There are also mini robots furby. These little funny guys are popular in '90, but now they back. I thing ealier version are better, don't have these a little bit crepy eye. But now they have more funcion, they can be angry or mad. Really, friends of mine give one to her dother... and one day little girl come to mommy and said that her furby is angry... mom just smile and said to show it to her.... and really it was really mad because little girl didn't feed him on time.

  7. The problem with technology I have is that the more I use it the more often I am irritated by that little things that just don’t work. I used to follow tech news but know I prefer to step back and wait until a new gadget settle on the market. Moreover, although I do use facebook, I am afraid that I could lose control where and how my data are used. For instance, it would be great if someday a teleport was invented. But I could make a bet that on default it would take photos, play melody, checkout on foursquare and inform all the world where a one is teleporting. Of course it would be packed with electronics that stop working when you least expect it. I think that world is running too fast - new inventions, new gadgets, faster, more and more and therefore underdeveloped and bugs prone.

  8. I am a freelancer computer desginer so basicly I canot imagine life without th Internet. Why?
Firstly, it is so helpsful. I can google everything by using it. So I can get to the information and knowledge extremely fast. I just have to know how to search.
Secondly, I can communicate not only with my friends but also wuth my clinets. So I use e-mail and social media all the time.
What's more, I read all my favourite newspapers and blogs in the Internet. I prefer do read an actual printed book but I simply have no time to do so...

On the other hand, I must admit that I am a little addicted to the Internet. Ok maybe not a little, actually a lot. Take these class for example. It wouldn't be possible if there was no Internet.

But I think that worl without the Internet would be so much slower, in a good way. People would have more time…Having a robot at home would be pretty weird…No I think I can do my own house work by myself.

    The future will be crazy….

  9. For me, there would be no life without modern technology, computers and the Internet. Just look at what's happening with Facebook. Almost everyone spends half his life on FB. Therefore, as can be to live without technology?
I'm trying to imagine the future, unfortunately, I couldn't tell what will happen in the next month or year. Robots? This is not the future this is the present. In my opinion, the only one thing is huge obstacle. I mean artificial intelligence

  10. Yes.. it is very difficult to predict progres of the technology. We dont know how the world will look like in the future. However based on some assumptions and development of projects like ASIMO or BigDog we can definitely state that the future comes with robots.

Even now some advance machinery is used in industrial production process. Behaviour of those machines is pre-programmed.

People know how to create machines but the real challenge is the software - artificial intelligence.

The biggest question is how this technology will be used. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45yWLgI40wM

There is another interesting project Kuratas made in Japan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4Oo9fAgl8M. For now is not armed And lets hope it will stay this way.

  11. It is indeed easy to imagine the world without the internet. We would be living like people in the 80s and many changes that happened, wouldn't have happened. Our whole culture these days resolves around the internet. Even the pop culture, the way people listen to the music - "the 10 second attention lifespan" makes people just skip the song if the song is not "catchy" enough, because they can always delete and download another one. Not to mention the way businesses work and the way people socialize. We would be stuck with actually TALKING to people, gosh ;-)

On another hand, it is impossible to imagine how the world will look like in 200 years. Can we predict the next 20 years? Highly unlikely. If you asked people 20 years ago, they imagined something entirely different. Sure, they imagined flying cars and people exploring space, which did not happen. But nobody predicted we will have the whole knowledge of earth in our pockets in form of smartphones, that are faster than anyone imagined computers can be. So yes, the changes are unpredictable. As far as technology goes, there's everything to look forward to.

  12. A world without the Internet would be like 100 years ago. The new technology is important for the development of civilization. New technologies can allow surveillance of citizens thats the bad side.
I think that for 200 years the Earth would be not exist due to nuclear war.
