Week 6: Global warming?

According to meteorological experts from the Russian Academy of Sciences this winter will be the harshest in the last 100 years. The scientists predict, it will start earlier and last longer with temperatures falling to record low levels. Signs indicating that the cold is coming are visible in the so-called North Atlantic Oscillation. The observed changes in the average temperature of the air and water in the oceans indicates that it is highly feasible that we will have a repetition of 1950, where the winter lasted very long and the snow fall was so burdensome that many people had problems leaving their houses as their weren't able to open their doors. Are those the symptoms of global warming?

The main view regarding the global warming is that humans are releasing massive amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. However, some scientists don’t agree with that view. They claim that the so called global warming is not fully elicited by humans and that it comes in cycles – meaning that global warming occurred even before human beings occupied the planet. A very interesting documentary which is attached below, “The Great Global Warming Swindle”, explains very well how the climate change became a business with immense amounts of money being made by large companies…

What do you think of global warming? Do you think that it is manmade or a natural phenomenon?

  1. Of course it's a manmade phenomenon and from what I heard, it was scientifically proved a while ago. It's true that the climate changes naturally - it's like a pretty giant sinusoide, leading us from dinosaurs to ice age (well, simplifying the proccess). However, those changes happen in a long, long time. They tend to be drastically slower than what we observe now - we need approximately 20 more years to lessen the Arctic ice by half! Naturally, there are scientists wildly defending the idea of "nature doing it itself", but as we all know, oil companies have a LOT of money and they probably can share few millions with poor men in laboratories... funded by those millions. :) It may sound like a conspiracy theory, but we shouldn't base our views on what some scientist said in a public video, but just on pure facts - comparing the lenght of global warming in pre-Christ era to what we observe now.

Unfortunately, the worst part of the global warming - at least concerning our lives and the next generation's, too - is not the warming itself, but other changes considering the weather. The level of oceans is rising up and some islands will vanish in few years time (you can google some info about evacuations in Polynesian area). The whole warming progress combines with the unusual high activity of the Sun, causing more UV radiation (more and more people severely burned during sun baths every year) and catastrophes like tsunami or severe thunderstorms.

I made my observations based on a severe phobia that I have myself - a thunder phobia. It's getting worse every year during past decade, reaching the dangerous peak this year. I keep storm maps with myself everywhere I go (it got so easy in smartphone era!) and if I just kept screenshots from last few years, you would see yourself how the level of weather severity is raising. I have goosebumps just thinking how hard it will be to function next summer.

  2. It's definitely manmade phenomen. We could only blame ourselves for this situation. It's true that global warming approach faster than we can expect. I think most of us are aware of consequences. People are making a great fuss about that matter, but the problem is that we wander too deep in this. People do want to save our planet, but it would cost changing their lifestyles. We are used to the way we living, and changes are almost impossible. There's an example in our country. We are trying to recycle trash from a long time. We never done that before, that's why it's so difficult. From my observation, people are always trying to avoid tough things, so when it comes to global warming, they say "It won't affect me".

There was a campaign, connected with those words:

  3. Human has huge influence on environment and nature, the more "developed" our civilization is, the more problems it brings. Global warming is one of the effects of our activity. Beside that we can observe more and more endangered species, destroying huge areas during resource mining process and environment disasters.
In my opinion it's almost impossible to change that process, there are negligible amount of people who really cares about nature. Unfortunately not much of them have capabilities to change behavior entities that are most responsible for present situation

  4. Historically climate change has been natural. However every evidence, such as nights warming faster than days and the upper atmosphere cooling while the lower atmosphere warms, indicates it is not due to the Sun. furthermore satellite measurements of inbound and outbound radiation indicate which greenhouse gases are most responsible as each greenhouse gas has a certain signature as they only absorb radiation at certain frequencies. The greenhouse gases most responsible for the current warming are CO2, methane and water vapour. Water vapour, however, is dependent on temperature and will always be a feedback and can't be responsible for the warming alone. Human emissions of CO2 amount to over 30gt annually while the atmosphere is increasing by 15gt annually. Therefor, from those numbers, one obviously comes to the conclusion that without human contribution the atmosphere would currently be declining in CO2. As CO2 is one of the major drivers of the current warming yes, man is responsible.

  5. For sure human actions cannot go unnotice - the influence on environment is huge and it will have serious far-reaching consequences for all creatures. With all the discussions about the subject we may think that people finally take it seriously and do something, but it is mostly empty talk. Without substantial changes (which seem to be partially impossible to introduce in recent advanced industry) the weather anomalies, higher sea level and others will be inevitable.

  6. I don't believe that human activity cause the global warming. Global warming as mentioned in the video is not caused by human activity. The growth of CO2 emission should not be associated with temperature growth. It is temperature that produce a waste in form of CO2 emission. This is not the issue.
However I don't believe that our activity make the world any better place for environment in any way. It is know from ages that industrial activity produce waste which is not utilised correctly. If this propaganda can change our industrial activity to become more eco friendly, then let it be.

  7. As others told us. Climate change is natural state. I don't agree that main reason of global warming is effect of CO2 production by the human.
The whole theory was a little different meaning for me. All spreads uses the name of the ECO / ECO-friendly etc ... by corporations. I read some research before the sales of a few years in which reported that the products bearing the green packaging and eco subtitles etc sold in the last decade better. It's weird because these products are not always better, but there are always more expensive.
Marketing advantage is the ability to notice a fact of their lives. And then skillfully introduce people into mistake. this is my opinion on global warming problem in the world.

  8. I agree with Martyna, although it does sound like a conspiracy...
One of my very good friends is a scientist, and we talked about global warming. She said same thing, that Martyna now did: it's a natural process, but now it's getting there much faster, and so we're gonna have another ice age much faster.
Suddenly this silly film called "2012" is not that silly anymore.....

  9. Subject like this always reminds me of high school. Global warming, endangered species, Internet... It's a little "been there, done that" don't you think?:P

Personally, I am little feed up with talking about this stuff. When scientists donnot have a clue about something they blame global warming.

Recontly I watched a geography professor talking on the TV and he was persuading us that there is no such thing as global warming 'cause it's quite natural behaviour for the Earth…Well he definately has persuaded me:)

  10. Global warming is a topic I have been hearing about since I was a child. It's a big problem, which in my view, cannot be solved quickly and entirely, unfortunately. We should stop talking and start acting! Everyone knows about global warming problem but does everyone knows how you can fight it in a simply way? Here, there are a few simple examples of my everyday activity which help stop global warming. When I leave home, I always turn off the lights, TV set and any other electronic equipment. I try to cook as little water as I need. I use old mineral water from bottles to water flowers and I crush empty bottles before throwing them away, and of course I recycle garbage. I'm positive that global warming it is a manmade problem. Like I said, let's do something in real life, not only on paper.

  11. I really recommended Bjorn Lomborg talks:
    http://blog.ted.com/2008/10/15/bjorn_lomborgs/
He calls for the rapid development of technology, rather than trying to cut CO2 emissions in factories. I identify with this statement and also think that the new method of production is the basis of modern ecology. The world is changing and it's completely natural fact. In addition, I think that global warming and the ozone hole is the biggest gosip of this century. There is nothing to fear.

  12. yea.. global warming, and we have much colder winter and summer this year :P They told this winter is going to be warmer.
We are prepare to use more nature friendly method of everything, but these people who have power now, didn't like new technology that can help mother earth. Best example are ecto car. Car for electricity or on bio fuel. But no, people who have a lot of money and oil to sold, woudn't agree to lose their really goodd cash, because.. why? they have a lot of money, and they can do everything, they didn't want change their life style.
For solve global warming topic we must change the whole world of people think about what is really important. After that we can try save our planet, or we must really fast do some space project and find new planet to life.

  13. I have read a lot about this issue. The general conclusion is, that while it's a natural phenomenon that the climate is changing, we are obviously contributing by generating energy and by unleashing certain chemicals into our atmosphere.

The main point is, fighting the global warming by itself is a great way but it solves more important problems than the warming itself. Much more important goal that reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere leads to is stopping exploiting of the limited resources we have (that might be needed in the future when there will be less means for collecting energy and more efficient ways of using what we have here) and saving the planet from pollution, which increases at an unbelievable pace. They are what we should be mainly concerned about, and stopping the very warming is a secondary goal but important as well, and if people start really focusing on reducing it, we'll save our civilization "just by the way".
