Week 6: Superhero movies then and now

How come the superhero movies are nowadays rated almost equally as serious drama films? Frequently they're even higher. Is it a result from a higher pressure on the complexity of plot and characters psyche? Or is it just thanks to "the more and bigger, the better" policy? I think maybe it's both.

It started with couple of guys who started writing action comics in late 1930. First, there was a Superman, the America's role model citizen. A superhero character who achieved notable fame and success in the US right from the start. After that it was only a matter of time when there was coming more and more superheroes.

Ten or fifteen years after Superman came to life, someone finally hitted on an idea to bring him to the silver screen. 15 years later there was first Batman production.

But the real superhero-movies marathon became in the late 70's when first Superman, starring Christopher Reeve, took place. Nothing remained the same since then.

I think it was a pretty good piece, despite of a bit childish tone and poor acting (not to mention these horrible red-blue Superman tights...). But the most unfortunate periods in my opinion happened in the 80's and mostly 90's. Pictures like Captain America, Howard The Duck,
Superman IV, Batman & Robin, The Phantom, Darkman II-III, were, gently speaking, a misfire. In that time there were also jewels like Tim Burton's Batman, with bull’s eye hit role of Jack Nicholson as Joker (on the right picture), and Batman Returns, or The Mask starring brilliant Jim Carrey.

Then, in year 2000 came - the X-Men. This film, by Bryan Singer, changed the way we look at the superhero movies. Here we had, apart action and special effects, the emotional depth; something we hardly could get earlier in such productions. Mutants, the main characters, are the outcasts of community, unaccepted for their unnatural abilities. The only place where they can find a shelter is professor Charles Xavier's school. This base gives the movie elaborated and complex story line.

The filmmakers are trying to give people more "emotionally advanced" and untrivial entertainment, since then.
Is it good for the superhero genre? Shouldn't it be light and infantyle, like the comics? I think the world is continuously evolving, so people are expecting more from comic books and in consequence - movies based on them.

Question time:

  • What do you think about superhero movies and their evolution? Should they change/evolve?
  • Do you like this kind of movies? What are your favorites?
  • What is the best period in the superhero movies history?

  1. What do you think about superhero movies and their evolution?
Direct evolution like in Godzilla movies or indirect, like how the character evolved on screen in these years. Well I think that since we are improving CG in movies, they do become better and better.
    Should they change/evolve?
Obviously. Otherwise they would look like the movies from 80's all the time.
Do you like this kind of movies?
Depends. If they are any good, they sure. If not, then - not really. Like i.e. every new Batman movie was in my opinion terrible, same goes for Superman or Spiderman. Thor was just pure stupid. Avengers - so so. Pacific Rim was fun.
    What are your favorites?
    Cars
What is the best period in the superhero movies history?
Hopefully 2015... cause 2014 so far looks pretty bleak.

  2. 1. I don't like old superheroes movies, just like I don't like old superheroes comics. It's jazzy and popular to praise comics drawn during the Cold War period just as it's trendy to like Burton's Batman, but it doesn't change the fact that every character there was made of pure thin paper, without a hint of surprise or unpredictability. Yes, they should evolve, and they're evolving into something really good.
    2. I do like modern comic book movies. I enjoyed famous Avengers, Thor and Captain America, but my personal favorite for ever and ever is the Watchmen. It made a perfect fun out of the superhero idea, it was cheesy on purpose, it was serious when needed and it showed the story of one of the best graphic novels of all time. What I like most about those movies is their ability to make a big wink to the viewers, to joke about the kitchy comic books and to put a little bit of irony inside the script. It can be easily seen in almost every modern Marvel movie.
    3. Here and now, starting from 2000.

  3. I think that all kinds of movies should change because the world is changing- other things creates our perception.
I love Burton's interpretations- Batman Returns from 1992 with genius role of Danny DeVito as a Penguin, and the Batman with Jack Nicholson as a Joker. I think that Burton is a director with ability to show freaks in the best poetic and mysterious way – this is why I love those movies. I haven't seen older superhero movies, but it could be fun. I agree with Martyna Z.- Watchmen is a genius movie.
As I mentioned – I don't think that movies are evolving , I think they are changing. Additionally, some movie creators change mentioned perception, not only using newest technology, but for example the way the camera moves. So, as for me, there's no such thing as good or bad period in movies history- I think there are good and bad movies.

  4. I'm not the biggest fun of fantasy movies but idea of superheroes is quite enjoying.
I think the biggest reason why superheroes evolving is changing movie technology. Their powers are firmly more futuristic every year, but their use remains "realistic". Technology makes movies unpredictable and this is the key for being a superhero.
I i said before, my attitude in this type of movies is indifferent, so I don't have favorites i think. If godzilla is superhero I'm fan of godzilla.
I think when I was young superman was the guy I thought this is superhero man with inhuman powers.

  5. 1. I think they have right to evolve. Like everything if someting would like to survive it has to evolve - the same applies to super hero movies. The time is changing and we need something adapted to our current pop culture.
    2. I like fantasy movies and superhero movies are in this category. From this category my favourite ones would be batman movies with Christian Bale. They were well played and have good plot.
    3. In not an expert in this topic and I'm not that interested in superhero movies history, so it is hard for me to say.

  6. I don’t know if I like movies with a superhero. I haven’t watched a lot of them. I haven’t even seen “Batman” with Heath Ledger as the Joker. The last movie with superheroes that I’ve seen and enjoyed was “The Avengers”. They were great and the story was also amazing. Like @Maria I also like Burton’s interpretations of Batman’s story because I’m a fan of his style of directing. Plus Jack Nicolson as a Penguin is, without a doubt, a genius.
I think everything evolves, so why not the superheroes? I guess they are just adapting to the time they are living in and that’s a good thing, isn’t it? Otherwise, they sill have the same characteristics, they only look more fresh and modern.

  7. What do you think about superhero movies and their evolution? Should they change/evolve?
It depends, for movies like Superman of course it changed for the better I think, with all new special effects. But for some it became worse. Let's see Batman as an example. Batman played in older movies was in my opinion closer to what was in the comic book. Right now I don't see batman as a detective, but as a guy with special combat training and loads of gadgets.

Do you like this kind of movies? What are your favorites?
They are good. Maybe not every one is amazing, but they are good. My favourite? At the moment I would say Man of Steel.

What is the best period in the superhero movies history?
Depends on the superhero movie. With Batman I would say 1989+, and for other, with more special effects, right now and the future.

  8. Superheros movies can be quite boring because they are extremely similar to each other, at least for me:P….Speaking about the evolution I think now the producers focuse more on special effects now that on a main story and plot.
Sometimes it can be enjoyable to watch such movie - you don’t have to think much:P.
X - men are definately my favourites. I even used to watch a cartoon about them when I was little on Cartoon Network if I recall corectly. I liked the first movies about them and I like the new ones. Except that one about Volverine, which was rather dull. I like watching movies where Michael Fassbender plays someone so i think the fact that he is the young Magneto is rather meaningful one for me. I guess, the best period for superheros movies has started few years ago and it still continious.

  9. What do you think about superhero movies and their evolution? Should they change/evolve?

They should be more mature for older audience and maintain the same level of fable for younger viewers.

Do you like this kind of movies? What are your favorites?

Hellboy and Sin City. DC Universe bores me a lot and there are too few good movies from Marvel universe. I am waiting for Days of the future past :)

What is the best period in the superhero movies history?

From 2000 up to now. Old movies aren't watchable with some exceptions ( like Reeves' Superman movies and Tim Burton's Batman movies ).

  10. Yeah, it's true most of those movies are pretty much the same, as someone already said. But I don't really care. As long as there's a lot of explosions, fires, tanks, and similar stuff going on, I can watch them all day long.
Don't get me wrong, I would never consider those to be "works of art" or anything. I just like to waste and hour or two watching mindless smashing. And it's much cooler when it's one guy smashing all the other guys. And yeah, I do realize I just summarized 90% of superhero productions.
The more polished the CG the better the final result, so I'd say, the newer the better - of course in terms of simple entertainment, not any other values.
Though I don't get all the obsession people have about those older movies, books, comics, and whatever. That's still pretty much the same thing.

  11. What do you think about superhero movies and their evolution? Should they change/evolve?
If it wouldnt evolve nobody would watch them. I think fit to viewer is necessary.
Like James Bond series was saved.
Do you like this kind of movies? What are your favorites?
This kind of movies arent my favourites but I watched new batman trilogy
    with pleasure.
What is the best period in the superhero movies history?
Its now, every month there is new superhero movie in cinemas.
Many heroes were dusted this days.
