Week 6: Movies in sound

One of the things that is essential to every movie, is in my opinion - music. But not just music that we hear in a radio or know as classical. Film music should be something more vivid, flexible. And to achieve this, composer has to sort of "feel" the movie, try to experience the scenes with the characters and the viewer.
Composer, who definitely have these skills and writes excellent music to almost every film he involves in, is John Williams.

Number of recognisable themes he created is impressive: Star Wars saga, Superman, Indiana Jones quadrilogy, Jaws, E.T.Close Encounters Of The Third KindHome Alone, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Harry Potter I-III, Catch Me If You Can, Hook, etc.
I think there are very few film music composers, who created such a collection of recognisable movie themes.

Furthermore Williams has the talent to interpret the story with irregular notes and ambient stains, which hangs together and is still great to listen. He writes music which in many cases is in more classical style but he also checks good in more light climates, like swing for example.

But not only Williams is my favourite soundtrack composer. There are guys like John Barry, known for his notable James Bond movie scores, Danny Elfman, mostly known for his frequent collaborations with Tim Burton on his movies, Hans Zimmer with his majestic and pompous style, Howard Shore - the father of The Lord Of The Rings trilogy music, Alan Silvestri with his Back To The Future characteristic main theme. All of them are almost equally great composers of film music.
I think that if it weren't be for them and their music, the films wouldn't be as entertaing as they are. On the other hand, would these composers write this music if there were no movies? Hard to tell.
  • Do you listen film music? What soundtracks do you have in possession, which would you recommend?
  • Are you familliar with the movie scores I mentioned in the text? If so, what do you think about them?
  • What is your favourite film music composer and/or movie soundtrack? What do you like about him/it?

  1. Do you listen film music?
It depends on the music. Obviously - I like music that I like, so not everything is in my interest. In my opinion, this is one of the reasons why buying the whole movie soundtrack is a stupid idea.
What soundtracks do you have in possession, which would you recommend?
Blues Brothers. Not all of it, but most. Some of others, but mostly one or two tracks per movie.
Are you familliar with the movie scores I mentioned in the text?
If so, what do you think about them?
Nope. Not my kind of thing.
What is your favourite film music composer and/or movie soundtrack?
Question been asked already. Blues Brothers.
What do you like about him/it?
Obviously since we're talking about music in movies etc, the scenario was above average.

  2. Armand, you're comments are kinda depressing, but grumpy cat avatar helps a little. :)

    1. Yes, I do a lot, actually. However, I prefer electronica over typical soundtrack style. My first favorite soundtrack was the one made for Matrix, I love songs chosen for Animatrix, too. Then came the utter love for music in Stigmata and Fight Club, made by The Dust Brothers. Now I'm more into shoegaze and lazy, dark atmosphere made by distorted guitars, so my fresh favorite is soundtrack done for Only Lovers Left Alive.

    2. I am, those are real classics! I think it's interesting you've mentioned Harry Potter, as it has one of the most recognizable themes in the recent history of motion picture - very well written. Personally, I've listened to Howard Shore's compositions thousands of times, as I used them as a background music for few video games I've played.

    3. I don't have one favorite, but I think Ennio Morricone is worth mentioning, as he wrote so much soundtrack music in his career that it's hard to keep up with it! Also Philip Glass, the author of "The Truman Show" soundtrack - a masterpiece, indeed. I don't know if it can be comparable, but I have a favorite soundtrack writer for video games - Rik Schaffer. His music creates an unique, dreamy atmosphere in virtual worlds. Here's a chillout example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=301Pxln7KDw

I think it's worth to mention David Lynch in this topic, as he helped composing and even sang in few songs for his movie's soundtrack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzgAIeRBBbk

This subject suits my interests very well, as I've spent few years in music school and now I'm beginning to work on soundtracks myself, starting from my own projects and hopefully some bigger scores in the future. 3. 1. I rarely listen to film music.

    2. I am familiar with mentioned movies, so I can tell that I heard those scores at least once, but I can't remember how they sounded. Maybe this is what makes soundtrack a good one? That it suits to movie so well that you can't focus on it separately?

    3. I recognize only Danny Elfman music- I love it because it is so charateristic and it suits in a genius way to Burton's movies.I can't imagine different soundtruck to his creations. This is what makes it special for me- when I think of other composers I could imagine to mix their creations and put them into different movies- with Burton's and Elfman's cooperation it would be impossible.

  5. 1. Sometimes I listen to film music. I would recommend soundtrack from Samsara movie ( http://www.filmweb.pl/film/Samsara-2011-335332 ). There is no word been spoken in this movie - there is only great music and pictures. I strongly recommend it to watch, because it shows our world as it is.
    2. I think most of them mentioned by you are worth to listen to. Especially Hans Zimmers music is really good. His, as you said, majestic and pompous style is very recognizable.

  6. I like to listen to films’ soundtracks. My beloved one was from “Juno” movie. I was listing the soundtrack during my whole tenure in high school and half of the studies. It’s great and I recommend it to everyone! Right now, I’m listening over and over again to one movie song: “I see fire” from the newest Hobbit.
My favourite movie composer is Nino Rota. He was an Italian composer. He has created music to almost every Federico Fellini’s movie and also to the “Godfather” directed by Ford Francis Coppola! I just love the sound he creates, that’s all :D.

  7. Do you listen film music?
    Yes, from time to time.
What soundtracks do you have in possession, which would you recommend?
    Tron: Legacy. Because Daft Punk.

Are you familliar with the movie scores I mentioned in the text? If so, what do you think about them?
I saw the movies so I heard them once. Of course there are more recognizable than others, like Imperial March from Star Wars. I think they were pretty good when used in movies, but I can't say that I would like to listen to all of them without movie.

What is your favourite film music composer and/or movie soundtrack? What do you like about him/it?

Maybe Hans Zimmer, he created many great soundtracks, but if we talk about one melody/song then I would say "Let it go" from Frozen. I must say that song is really amazing when you watched the movie and you know what it is all about. Well, that's Disney for you.

  8. Oh I love listening to the music from movies. It is a classical music but in a modern for, which is extremely attractive for me. I would definately recommend scores from : Gladiator, The Dutchess, Pirates of the Carrabian, The Great Gatsby - produced by Jay Z, Django, Harry Potter of course and many more.
I know almost all of them:) John Williams is the one who has composed the faboulous theme for Harry Potter, am I right? I enjoy his work very much. the same with Hans Zimmer. His music is so powerful and beautiful at the same time. He builds the tune perfectly. And I speak as a person, ho graduated from music school. They are my favourites.

  10. Do you listen film music? What soundtracks do you have in possession, which would you recommend?

I like Quentin Tarantino's movie soundtrack. Song fit perfectly into visual side of his movies ( especially Dick Dale's Miserlou in the beginning of Pulp Fiction ).

Are you familliar with the movie scores I mentioned in the text? If so, what do you think about them?

I don't like John Williams music soundtracks. I am familiar with them but for me they don't have that magic.

What is your favourite film music composer and/or movie soundtrack? What do you like about him/it?

Ennio Morricone! Who else would :)? Many spaghetti westerns and french movies. I also like Vangelis' style of composing. Especially Blade Runner has its beauty.

  11. Film music? Not really. I mean, it can be great etc, but it's made to closely fit the movie, so listening to the soundtrack itself is kind of pointless - at least for me. I do like the soundtracks of games, as they are not tightly coupled with what's going on, and usually it provides a nice, distraction-free background for work, reading, learning, whatever.
That being said, there are some classic parts you can listen to on their own - but there's only a few of those.
