Week 13 [18.01-24.01.2015] Old cartoons

Probably everyone was watching cartoons as a child.  Every child has a favorite cartoon. Today's cartoons are different and unfortunately we have forgotten  about the old legendary cartoons, which can look uglier, but they are still funny and educational.

One of them is the Polish cult production  „Bolek i Lolek”. It tells the story of two characters: Bolek and Lolek and their adventures. Adventures of these characters were very popular, so they created many series, several films and even books and comics. Interestingly, this series was the only European production authorized to be broadcast in Iran after the Islamic revolution in 1979.

Another also very popular Polish production I'd like to talk about is Reksio. Like Bolek and Lolek, this cartoon was produced by Cartoon Film Studio in Bielsko-Biała. The cartoon presents various adventures of a dog Reksio that meets other animals and humans. These adventures are very relaxing and funny. Reksio even has its own monument in Bielsko-Biała.

Another cult Polish cartoon is Strange Adventures of Koziołek Matołek. It’s about a goat that travels around the world in search of a mythical city of Pacanów. These adventures are unusual and very unbelievable. For the first time this character appeared in picture stories for children in 1933.  More than 30 years later they created the animated series about adventures of this funny character which has been a cult figure until today.

The last cartoon I wanted to write about is Krecik. The cartoon has the Czech origin and was very popular in Poland. The author didn’t want to duplicate the patterns of American cartoons where the characters were dogs, cats and mice so the main character is a mole. He decided to pick a mole after stumbling over a molehill during a walk.

1. What do you think of today's cartoons?
2. Did you watch any of the above cartoons?

  1. 1. What do you think of today's cartoons?

The only one I watch is "penguins of madagascar". I thinks it's a good cartoon either for young and elder people. It's hard to say if it's educational cartoon, but watching it makes a lot of fun.

I assume that you don't think todays cartoons = anime, because it's not the same and most of anime series shouldn't be watched by children.

    2. Did you watch any of the above cartoons?

Of course, I watched every of these cartoons you mentioned in your article, but today I wouldn't watch them again. Why, you ask? They are maybe ok for children, for elders they could be boring.

    3. What is your favorite cartoon from your childhood?

Definitely Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The story was interesting, the animation was very good (even today it's eye-friendly) and the main protagonists had cool character.

  2. Today's cartoons are very specific and any different types, from very funny to education. I think, some of these include dialogues not suitable for children.

Of course, I watched all these cartoons. My favourite cartoon was of the above "Bolek i Lolek".

In my childhood my favourite cartoon was the Power Rangers. I watched every episode :)

  3. I don't watch cartoons these days, but from what I've seen a couple of years ago, when my little brother watched them, they are terrifying. I mean the destination towards which they are headed, their continuous uglification and stupidification is disturbing, to say the least. Obviously I don't see the whole specrtum - maybe there are some series worth watching, but anyway I think they are merely a drop in the sea of all of them Peppa Pigs and Strawberry Shortcakes.

Those are, I hope, approved by the "specialists", and maybe that is the way a child's brain works, but I remember cartoons that shaped me, and they didn't treat their viewers as just a little more intelligent than a kitchen plant. Like Johnny Bravo - it was stupid, I agree, but I can still watch it now and laugh - seeing Thomas the Tank Engine just makes me want to gouge my eyes out.

  4. 1. It's hard to express any opinion on today's cartoons, because I don't watch it. I have heard only opinions that are very stupid and primitive.
    2. Of course, I have seen these cartoons. Definitely the best of them is Reksio.
    3. My favorite cartoon was Dragon Ball. I watched every episode with huge interest. I really very worried about a fate of characters :)

  5. As an older brother of two young girls I must admit that sometimes we watch cartoons together. Right now there are plenty "kids" channels with a lot of crap, but you can find good ones like The Amazing World of Gumball (a bit psychedelic but funny and with some value) or Adventure Time- very creative in my opinion.
I watched all from mentioned cartoons and many others, but there are no favourites I guess. Remember when everyone was rushing their houses after 4 p.m because there was Dragon Ball on RTL so perhaps this one.

  6. Nowadays cartoons are terrible and mostly, got bad influence on children. When i saw in television group of ugly monsters which predominantly fight each other and scream loudly, I only asked myself a question: how children could be normal if they watch such things.

From all of examples from your presentation, I've watched only "Krecik" (just a few episodes) It was good. For me as a child as least :)

My favorite cartoon from childhood? Hmm.... difficult choice. "Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears" where okey :)

  7. 1. They're awful. Seriously, I don't know what happened, but I find those classic 90s cartoons as best ones. I was watching them very, very often as a child, and I find them awesome. Nowadays - maybe it's just me, but I don't like them, perhaps I'm just too old for them :(.

    2. Of course, especially on old VHS. I recognize all cartoons you mentioned. They were great.

    3. It's hard to name one, probably Dexter's Laboratory, I always liked him as a small genius, I aimed to be the one as well back then ;).

    1. Dexter's Laboratory - +1 for that one. I've had an annoying little sister, just like he did.

  8. It's been quite a few years since I last watched any cartoons. I've seen all the ones you've mentioned, though. The one I'd add to the list is Moomins. Really liked it when I was a kid.

I have no idea what today's cartoons really look like, but just by looking at the kids, I guess it's pretty bad.

  9. 1. What do you think of today's cartoons?
I have nothing to say on this topic, because I didn't watch cartoons for a long time. I have no idea which cartoons are actually transmitted.

    2. Did you watch any of the above cartoons?
Yes of course. These are some of the most popular Polish cartoons. Can somebody don't know these cartoons? Especially I liked to watch "Krecik".
But I don't remember these cartoons especially closely. As a child I watched more often other cartoons.

    3. What is your favorite cartoon from your childhood?
I can not point the most favorite. Cartoons that remind me of childhood is Pink Panther, Donald Duck, Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines, The Flinstones.

  10. 1. I think modern cartoons are much different than ones I weaned on. For example, the animation process is more "artificial". What I mean is that there are no animated illustrations anymore. Instead, characters and environment are generated on computers.
Also, the plot is poorer in exchange for more and more action, but unfortunately less adventure. :/

    2. But of course, all of them. Reksio was my favourite, I believe.

    3. That would be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Duck Tales, Gummi Bears, Smurfs, Looney Tunes, Pinky And The Brain, Animaniacs and The Moomins. Later on, the Cartoon Network early productions, such as Dexter's Laboratory, Courage The Cowardly Dog, Grim & Evil, Ed, Edd n Eddy, and I'm pretty sure I forgot about few more. :)

I don't really like today's cartoons, all of them developed into 3d crap with a lot of silly jokes, disgusting behaviors and stuff. It isn't any strange later that today's children misbehave so often.

I watched most of the old cartoons you're talking about and I like most of them. Maybe they weren't all filled with intelligent jokes but there wasn't at least so much violence there.

  12. I don't watch today's cartoons, so I don't have a comparison with the older one. Ofcourse I watched Koziołek Matołek or Reksio, but Krecik was strange and always make me scared, I have no idea why. I don't have favorite cartoon, I simply like them all, they are a part of my childhood.

  13. 1. What do you think of today's cartoons?
I don’t know well any of them, but saw one when taking care of younger brother. It’s not the same with my cartoons. Recently, violence is an integral part of the cartoon and all of characters are taking a war between each other.
    2. Did you watch any of the above cartoons?
No, because of my age. Watching them makes me tired.
    3. What is your favorite cartoon from your childhood?
I have a few favorite cartoon. I grew up watching Donald duck and mickey mouse – it was a great time. Then I watched Dragon Ball - it is a Japanese manga. Every day at four pm I stopped doing my house work and start watching Dragon Ball.

  14. I don't really watch any of the new cartoons so i can't tell if they are good or not. But one thing that I know for sure is that they don't look nice.
Yes ,I've watched all of the cartoons mentioned by you and loved them back in the days.
I don't have a single favourite cartoon. There were planty of good and funny ones. Maybe Dexter's Labolatory or Kleszcz because those came to my mind when I think about cartoons.

  15. 1. What do you think of today's cartoons?
I know nothing about today’s cartoons, but as far I can remember new cartoon was always worse than classical Looney Tunes.

    2. Did you watch any of the above cartoons?
I’ve been watched all of these. My favorite cartoon was Koziołek Matołek.

    3. What is your favorite cartoon from your childhood?
My favorite cartoon was Top Cat. It was like a Goodfellas, the Martin Scorsese’s movie in cartoon world.

  16. I'm not a big fan of cartoons, I have never been and probably I will not be. Of course, I sometimes watch a cartoon like "penguins from Madagascar," but this is very sporadic.

I've always preferred films for the elderly, although I'd be lying if I said that I did not watch "Bolek i Lolek" or "Reksio". But it never was my favorite cartons.

If you watch some cartoons that were the Disney cartoons, one of my favorites was a series of tales about Alladine

  17. I think that today's cartoons are overfilled with violence, which influences children in a very bad manner as they get used to sceens with, for example, blood and fights in a very early age. When it comes to the above cartoons, I watched all of them and it seems to me that they were created in a way that films for younger audiences should be done: interesting plot, speaking animals, and a cheerful vision of life (everyting a child needas ;) ). As for my favourite cartoon, I think it's 'Bolek i Lolek' as their adventures took my attention and captivated me a lot.

  18. Today's cartoons are generally speaking overfilled with weirdness. I like them tho - take Adventure Time for example. It's weird on every level, but I love this cartoon, take Over the garden wall - this cartoon is amazing - watch it. It's like new adaptation of Dante's Inferno.
But to sum it up I would say that new cartoons don't really have the 'spirit' of the old ones.
I watched lots of cartoons including all of them you asked.
My favourite was old Mickey mouse and Donald Duck I loved those old cartoons :)

  19. I totally agree with previous writers. Nowadays, cartoons that are widely available are strange, full of weird, violence, non-growing and non-expand the boundaries themes.

While being a kid I used to watch a lot of cartoons. One that I remember the most is "Ach ten Andy". Cartoon about boy who loves doing pranks on everyone. How many hours I spent with my brother or friends to recreate or generate pranks. I think I'm even still got a notebook with all of them written down. And of course "Tom & Jerry", but I think I shouldn't even mention that, it's obvious.
