Week 12 [11.01-17.01.2016] Netflix

Netflix is a video-rental  website, which is the biggest in the world. It is available over the world, expect the Republic of China, North Korea and Syria. It was created by Reed Hastings in 1997 in Los Angeles. What is more, before creating Netflix, he was selling hoovers. In USA, Netflix has 36%  of  the video market. Everyone thought that Netflix would collapse in a short period of time. The decision to start operating in Poland was taken in June 2015. It shows us that the company is evolving.

Netflix owes its  popularity to its approach to the matter. Inter alia, other suppliers release one episode every second weeks, but Netflix releases the whole season. In Poland, Netflix neglected a language issue, but I think it's a matter of time.
"House of Cards" is the one of many series having been made by Netflix. This series is a kind of political drama based on Michael Dobbs's novel. This is about a politician, Frank Underwood, who  is planning his revenge on the president. One season has got 13 episodes, and one episode is 40 to 50 minutes long. At this moment Netflix made available three seasons, and the next seasons are being made. This series is very popular over the world.

"Narcos" is the next series made by Netflix. It's about Pablo Escobar, who is a Columbian boss of drug dealers and his problems with law. The Series had its premiere last year on August 28. Then Netflix aired ten episodes. And also this series obtained popularity.

Netflix is just like Spotify, you watch movies a monthly payment.
Spotify gained big approval in Poland. Maybe Netflix will win it too.
Netflix gives three versions - Basic, Standard and Premium. The difference lies in the quality of movies. It costs about 32zł to 48zł a month. This is almost the price for one Blu-Ray CD.
I think that with time Netflix will be equally popular like abroad. Currently Netflix can be a danger for other companies. For example: Vod , upc, r canal +. And that's all because Netflix offers monthly subscriptions instead of  payment for one film.

1. Do you think that Netflix will achieve success in Poland?
2. How do you see the film market in 5 years?
3. Do you think that the price is appropriate for Netflix's services?

  1. 1. It all depends on how effectively Netflix will make available movies /TV series. In the US, Netflix has promoted thanks to the "House of cards", in Poland the service is already available but the TV series further is not available (no translation). According to me this is a big feather.
    2. I think Netflix has a very high chance to survive in the market, such as VOD services are completely meaningless to me. But I love apps like Spotify because whenever I want I have access to the content what I need.
    3. So far I think the price is too high for an incomplete database of materials. Maybe that's why we get a month free of charge. When the base will be completed I think the price will be very competitive in the market.

    1. House of Cards is not available on Netflix in Poland because NC+ has exclusiveness for that series.

    2. House of Cards will be on Netflix in Poland soon. It's a question of timing.

I don't know. Currently there are some limits to Polish accounts. Some videos are not available. There are many ones that don't have dubbing/lector or even subtitles.

    2. How do you see the film market in 5 years?

cinema + VOD (netflix is VOD too). Regarding to cinema I am not sure, because today you can have a good projector for a low price.
Personally I have a projector. It costed 800 PLN, and for that price I have a ~ 60 inch screen :)

    3. Do you think that the price is appropriate for Netflix's services?

It's ok even for people in our country (lower earnings).

The standard account costs 9.99 euro per month, which is about 43 PLN. This account is sufficient for almost everyone (FullHD). The premium account has 4K resolution (most videos and TV screens does not support it).

    1. I think that Netflix will achieve success in Poland, the same way like Spotify. Users of Spotify are happy because of Netflix is in Poland. Issue of language is just question of time.

  3. I don’t know what you mean by success there are many people who believe that everything on internet should be for free, so paying regular subscription might be a problem for many potential users. Personally I already have an account, in my opinion it is a good service. Movie market is not expanding as fast as technology itself I’m not predicting any big changes here. Perhaps there will be more Virtual Reality possibilities to watch movie in UHD quality. For people who are not watching TV regularly, 40zł per month for such wide variety of movies should be a good option.

    1. Also a lot of people has Spotify and they pay 20zł every month, so when they read something about Netflix then they will get a count in Netflix too

  4. I've heard someone from polish television said something like this: "Netflix isn't competition for us because they don't have polish content." - What does he mean? Netflix will bankrupt because we can't watch "na wspólnej" on it?

I personally think it's better than polish television (I don't watch TV). For me Netflix don't have to get polish subtitles or lector, but of course it will be much better for them if they will have it.
If it comes to price. It could be to high. Polish people prefer free access :)

    Netflix have interesting ideas:

PS: In this year they attempt to double their "Netflix series" and whole season is always published at one time. Isn't that great?

  5. Do you think that Netflix will achieve success in Poland?

It depends, it is hard to say if somebody will succeed in Poland, you have to work hard.
    2. How do you see the film market in 5 years?
Technology is changing every day nowadays, is is going really fast, I think during 5 years everything is possible if we have Internet.
    3. Do you think that the price is appropriate for Netflix's services?
Yes, I think so, although you can always find some lower prices of the services.

  6. I believe that has achieved a great success. I think Netflix can rival with television in the future.
Film market will grow very wide and I think it will be global.
The price now maybe is not good, but I think that in a few years or even a few months will be appropriate to the number of films in this service.

  7. 1. It depends on offer video by Netflix. For now, the offer is very poor, lacking many movies and serials with Polish voice-over or subtitles.
    2. I expect that traditional television will disappear from the market. Everything will be based on VOD.
    3. I think the price isn't appropriate. As I have already mentioned there are a lack of movies directed to poles. Not everyone know English, to watch video in original language.

I never waited for netflix and I was never following its currently supported locations, as I wasn't watching any series too often. It's difficult for me to predict its success in Poland, but I know the people here and how spending any money for anything connected with culture is a problem even when they have a lot of money. Many people in this country have some mentality problems and as for now we can't bypass that, it's some after PRL stuff.

As for the future it's easily to think that VOD stuff will strongly develop, but the cinemas will last as well. It's easy to say that buying some big screen or projector together with nice sound system is easily affordable, but still, when you're living with some neighbours just behind your walls making a movie as loud as you could watch it in a movie is still difficult (I was living in a flat for a long time so I know stuff).
I just hope there will be less commercials in the cinemas as that part is really irritating.

I think the price is too big as there are multiple popular movies we're waiting for that we can't watch now. Maybe in the future it will improve.

  9. Maybe it will achive success, maybe it won't, we will see in the future but from what I know people dont like to pay for such things in Poland.
In 5 years it still might be simillar with some changes in movies quality but in the further future I guess it will be completly different. Devices for recording might change and devices on which we watch movies can also be revolutionary.
As for the price I can't say anything because I dont use it neither Im interested.

  10. 1. Do you think that Netflix will achieve success in Poland?
 - Think it depends on how full of content this service will be and what price it will cost. Paying symbolic price for HD quality of liked content - worth it.
    2. How do you see the film market in 5 years? - World is going in direction of online market. So probably film market is not exclusion.
    3. Do you think that the price is appropriate for Netflix's services? - If you want and can watch movies in English then answer is yes. If cant - probably you wont pay for it. For USA and west europe price looks like 2 cups of coffee, not so much.

  11. I heard about Netflix in Poland in a day it comes. I've never waited for it. However it's not connected with aversion to movies or series. By now it was enough for me what was on TV and a record button on a TV remote.
On the other side. Once was video rental shops to which I was going. Then VOD and the ability to rent movies direct from TV caused that I stop going to rental shops. Maybe some day I will choose also Netflix.

  12. Firstly, I am glad that Netflix will be available in Poland. It is good that in this market the consumer will have more and more choice.

    1. Do you think that Netflix will Achieve success in Poland?
I guess so. However, it takes a little time and maybe it will not be as spectacular success as in other countries.

    2. How do you see the movie market in 5 years?
I think that in the coming years on the movie market, supplier like Netflix will have an increasing share.

    3. Do you think that the price is Appropriate for Netflix's services?
It seems to me that the price is right. It remains only to wait to improve the offer by Netflix

    1. Netflix is avaible in Poland now. There are such a movies and a series. One fault is language, but this will change soon, I think

  13. 1. Yes, it may take a while, but it's a good alternative and I guess that actually it'll be pretty popular in a while.

    2. It's hard to predict, I'd say that it'll focus even more on the internet, rather than traditional cinema. Steam platform already offers subscription for movies, where you literally "buy" movie and watch it online.

    3. I'm not sure, I'd say it's too high but it's because I'm not interested in movies, so price may be OK for most of the people.

  14. I’ve heard opinion that they offer only small part of movies for Poland users. For example, the most famous series “House of Cards” was sold for Canal+ and Polish users cant’t see them via Netflix. So I don’t think that Netflix will achieve a success in Poland.
Pepole will start to leave the tv because of the Internet. Services like Netflix will become more and more popular. For example Amazon Prime in a short time will start broadcasting a new Top Gear. I think that many pepole will buy subscription just to watch this series.
In my opinion this price is reasonable and quite low - let us remember that they just started in Poland!
