Week 2: The Real Silent Hill

From books written by Lovecraft to movies directed by Hitchcock, the popularity of horror genre seems to prove that people consider being scared as an entertainment. Fortunately, it's not unnoticed in the video game world, as there are more and more titles designed to shiver the market.

One of the most popular video game franchises, Silent Hill, has been brought to the cinema twice by now. However, those movies are just a sneak peak to the real story that lies in a virtual world. A wonderfully written psychological horror film set in an imaginary town in Maine, US leaves us very uneasy. The occurring sound of sirens is a signal of incoming darkness, everything is grey and covered in ash, which falls from the sky like rain.

(Showing the footage from the movie, as all of the games serve more disturbing pictures, but I encourage you to try and watch "the scariest moments of Silent Hill" on YouTube :) ).

But did you know that the dreaded town burning with eternal fire... actually exists? The ghost town of Centralia, Pennsylvania resembles Silent Hill in many different ways. Well, there are no monsters there (or so we think), but even considering this huge comfort no-one thinks about moving there. The town literally lies on fire, which comes out with pillars of smoke through the cracks in the abandoned highway.

The fire comes from a coal mine beneath the town. It started to burn over five decades ago and it's estimated to last for at least the next 250 years. At first, the scale of the fire was not known and the locals lived their normal lives above the burning ground. It all ended when a giant sinkhole suddenly opened under one child's feet. A 12-year old boy was playing outside when the ground just disappeared, and if it hadn’t been for his brother to pull him out, he would have certainly fallen into the lava. Since that moment, its inhabitants have begun to leave the town. Apparently, few of them are too attached to this place to leave, and as it is stated in documents, 9 people still live in Centralia.

Questions!
1. Do you like horror stories? What are your personal favorite horror movies/books/games?
2. Have you heard about any other ghost towns that drew your attention?
3. Would you like to visit Centralia or other ghost towns, considering all the risks?

Horror stories are amazing. Thinks like Czarnobyl and the ghost town. As a photographer I'm looking on this matter for a photograper's point of view - so many different possibilities.
    2. Have you heard about any other ghost towns that drew your attention?
I think there is a "Ghost Town" place in Krakow where You enter one of the scarriest places in Poland. There are ghost towns everywhere. They are great places to play paintball!!
    3. Would you like to visit Centralia or other ghost towns, considering all the risks?
Risks? No risks. Just fun. as far as there are no ghosts there of course.

  2. 1. I don't like horror movies. I have nothing against thrillers, or TV series, but not movies.
I love Supernatural, which started as a horror, but now... no idea what this TV series is, ah ah ah.
Still this city looks amazing and I would love to visit it, for a moment, but I would be a little bit affraid, that I could have fall into the lava...
    2. I didn't hear anything about other towns, but I did hear about a haunted vacation house in a middle of a forest. The guy who owned it, told me lots of weird stories that happened there, like there were cold spots, moving objects...
    3. I would like to visit those cities, but for a moment, like few hours max, otherwise I'll die of fear... Now, the question is, will my husband go with me?

  5. I kinda like horror stories but kinda don't :) I don't watch any horror movies as I have nightmares for weeks after that - actually even thrillers or some "harder" dramas can make this happen. I wouldn't be able to play any horror game - I would be just too scared to go on and explore the world. However I've seen both Silent Hill movies (and by the way the second one was completely rubbish, don't ever waste your time on that one) just because my boyfriend loves horrors and I sometimes join him. I liked the first one and really regret I won't play the actual game.
I love some good horror stories though. And not these lame fictional ones - the real thing is way more exciting. After reading through the text I read all about Centralia in Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centralia,_Pennsylvania Although I wouldn't explore any of the ghost towns - again, too scared - I often read about them in the leisure of my home on the web. I even have my own favorite topic: reading about abandoned amusement parks - how they got closed and what happened after. It's a very interesting, exciting read and truly terrifying as most of the stories involve deaths of innocent people.

  6. I like good horror stories, but I also love making fun of them. Maybe because of the tension that really scary movies makes me feel. A good example of playing with horrors convention is a serial called American horror story. Each episode includes very well created scary moments, typical for different movies from that kind.

I can't remember hearing about any specific ghost town. Just like Dalvia, I remember a few stories about scary abandoned houses in the middle of forest.. I think I heard about those when I was a child during summer camps.

As Armand mentioned – I see no risk in visiting that place- just a lot of great opportunities for photographer. I'd love to see what happens with light when there's so much strange smoke. Ghost town near Krakow where you can play paintball- it sounds amazing! Thanks you Armand- I'll consider to go there!

  7. Magda - you would certainly love Silent Hill 3 then (the video game), as there is a super-scary part happening in amusement park! Too bad you're to afraid to try! Myself, I can't really handle that much stress, so I'm often panicking while playing horror games. That's why I prefer to watch them as a movie, for example on YouTube :)

Maria - if by any coincidence you have to travel to Pennsylvania, take your camera to Centralia for sure! I would love to see some good quality photos from this place... From what I've heard, it's perfectly safe now and the terrain of the city is devoured by nature, so maybe there's a chance to see a forest covered in fog, which actually is a fire smoke.

  8. 1.Do you like horror stories? What are your personal favorite horror movies/books/games?
Yes, a lot. I’m such a horror freak. My personal favorite films are Amitiville, The grudge, The Conjuring, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Salem's Lot. I watch, anyone which falls into my hands – some are good others worse. However, in the real world I would rather avoid meeting with the ghosts.
2.Have you heard about any other ghost towns that drew your attention?
Unfortunately I didn’t hear anything about others ghost towns. I hear about hounted house or people, mainly from the “Nie do wiary” program.
3.Would you like to visit Centralia or other ghost towns, considering all the risks?
I like to travel and explore new places, so why not? Maybe I'll add it to my list - places on the map to visit. Risk? not;) Although the background music from "Footage from the real Silent Hill" Centralia - soundtrack from Requiem for a dream makes me feel a slight uneasiness…

  9. Personaly I don't like horror stories because of my vivid imagination. When I read horror story I can "see" everything which could happen there and after reading it is hard for me to leave all monsters and scary things in the book and simply go back to the reality. From the other side I love Lovecraft books, because they are well written and the scary thing almost never shows up from nowhere, the tension is build slowly and in the end he leaves reader with no answers and boosted imagination.
I'm not interested in ghost towns and I don't want to go to any of them. For me there is nothing interesting and the risk is to high- they are ghost towns for some reason.

  10. 1. Actually I'm not a big fan of horror movies and I find them boring. I don't understand how anybody can be scared watching such a movie - maybe when I was a 10-year old boy I used to be afraid of it, but definitely not now.
2.Well, I heard about some ghost places that exists even in Warsaw. In the district of Waliców street, probably it is the urban legend, where jewish ghetto was located, there is a cellar where ghosts of murdered Jews are still doing noises - and nobody goes in there during the night. But let's be serious - I don't believe it is happening.
    3. Yes, I would like to visit Centralia because I enjoy travelling very much. And since it looks like an interestings place with the fire in the coalmine, why not then?

  11. I love horrors. I think I have seen most of the movies made in the last 10 years.
I often feel like watching a new scary story but I can’t find any good piece lately. My favourite horror movie is “The Ring”, because after 12 years Samara the main hero still scars me. I like the most paranormal stories with ghosts, demons or witches. I really don’t like bloody butchery movies like “Saw” or “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”.
I have heard about many ghost towns but unfortunately only in horrors or TV series “Supernatural” :). From one side, I’d love to visit a town like this, because it must be a great adventure. And from the other side, I’m sure I would be scared to death. I guess, I could make it only with a group of good and crazy friends or in the company of Winchester brothers from “Supernatural” :).

  12. Wow awesome place! I didn't know that there is so creepy place in the world. I like watching horrors, feel uncomfortable and a little bit scared. My personal best movie in this genre is "exorcism emily rose". This movie is so sick that i like to watch them without the end.
There's many ghost towns in the world my favorite is pripyat. But the is also where interesting place in the cypr. The ghost town of empty hotels.
Yes of course ghost towns are great to see, and of course I was in some of them but there are many others to visit. I was one time in haunted house and this was the last one I visit. After visiting empty cities is much easier to pick up the pieces together after all.

  13. 1. Do you like horror stories? What are your personal favorite horror movies/books/games?
Yup. I think that everyone likes to get scared from time to time. As Dalvia I watch Supernatural, or I did... now it's not the same show anymore.

    2. Have you heard about any other ghost towns that drew your attention?
I think Ghost Towns are everywhere. I heard about Centralia because of Silent Hill games/movie but not about any else. Although I think chernobyl was a ghost town some time ago.

    3. Would you like to visit Centralia or other ghost towns, considering all the risks?
I think such a visit would make a great story to tell.

  14. Oh my…It's a tough one fore me - I don't like horror movies, nor video games. So I will just answer your questions shortly…
    1. As I mentioned I am not a fun of horror movies/stories/games. This is why I don't have fovourite one…As I read the comments I realise that most of people enjoy a good horror movie so I cannot really click about it with anyone..Oh now there are few - @tomekkerber and @natalia - hi5

I agree with you guys. Horror movies are boring. And if not borring too scary (obviously:) for me to watch.

    2. I haven't heard about any ihter city ghost but to emphasise once again - I am not into this subject so I don't really care.

    3. Oh no, not even if someone have paid me…or..ok..maybe depends how much:P

  15. The horror stories are certainly the ones that the people are most drawn to, for whatever reasons. I've been to a few of those so-called 'haunted' places and either I'm completely ghost-proof, or there's nothing there. Still, the feeling you get in a cellar with just a flashlight by your side is... one of a kind. I like it. If I could visit such a 'ghost town' I think I would not hesitate for a moment. I mean, the biggest risk is probably hitting your head on something while walking around the place.
