Oh gosh, last week I was on a concert of BackStreet Noys, so duuh! I remember them! And Spice Girls and all of that. I had so much fun in my childhood, that I just hope that my kids will have as much fun! :) But I also had Tazos, and yoyos :)
I laughed hard while reading this and seeing the exact same Sailor Moon cards that I had. :) Speaking of which, Sailor Moon took a major part in my childhood - I watched every episode twice on TV and had my own collection of Sailor Toys. I truely believed that I was Sailor Jupiter and my superpowers are hidden, yet!
Personally, I was a little bit of a nerd kid - I had zero talent in any physical activity, including chinese rope, so I just stood at home playing video games on Commodore 64 or my old PC. I guess my childhood was pretty "futuristic", as nowadays every kid does that. But it was fun, I lived in an enormously large block of flats, so the packs of kids were just meeting each other in chosen apartments and play games together.
I wasn't the part of boysband mania at all, couldn't understand why people listen to Backstreet Boys or Just 5. My parents tried to keep me away from pop music, so I've grown up listening to Guns'n'Roses and Jimi Hendrix. However, in my few years old rebelious age, I bought myself Britney Spears tape and listened to it over and over :)
As for me when I think of the 90's I mostly remember walkmans and mix - tapes which I used to prepare all the time. I asked my parents for a radio with cassette recorder and when I enjoyed a song, I press red button to record it. Later I was using my walkman to listen to it. Another think 90's remind me of, which wasn't written in the article, are Gamblers - computer magazines with a CD filled up with all kinds of game. I collected games and went to my father's office to play them on his computer.
I was a crazy fan of Spice Girls, had tons of materials about them, posters, cassettes, photos - just everything! :) I wasn't much into boybands though, didn't listen or even liked Backstreet Boys and N' Sync. I also had Tamagotchi but i remember not doing so well - my little friend died a lot. Later on I got a Furby and this was fun for a while, but honestly I wasn't so amused with him, although it was my first contact with robotics. I guess that nicely shown how I'm not gonna be into robotics in the future either. My 90's were also about computers and games. I had a computer at home from a very early age and had loads of games on it. I particularly loved ones that involved building and management. Sim City and later on Sim City 2000 were ones I spent days on. There also were Theme Park which was I think the best one from that period - involved building and managing amusement park and had great, lively graphics. Later, the same publisher went on with Theme Hospital which involved treating people but as much as I had fun, I was always terrified that patients might die despite my great efforts - when they did I was genuinely saddened. For fun thing I remember but were not mentioned in the original text: I played tazos a lot! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tazos And I was pretty good at it :) Anyone else?
I have similar memories like Agnieszka. (aside from Spice Girls or Bakcstreet Boys) My list is very, very long. What first came to my mind - honestly admit that I'm lost, because I think a few things at the same time;).
Starting from fables - The Lion King - an undeniable hit of childhood. TV series - Captain Tsubasa was my big idol. Every day after the episode I had to play the football. Another memories associated with Pokémon. Collecting tazoos, stickers. Total madness.
At school or in the backyard girls always gave diaries - tens, often more than one hundred questions about my and my family personal data, plans for the future (in primary school), feelings and affection. For this everything - nice envelope, poems, drawings, quotes -the more the better. I was rather minimalist in this regard. ;) Of course everyone from the class had to enter into such diary or otherwise notebook called ‘Złote myśli’. In hindsight I wonder what happened with those treasuries trove of knowledge after completing school ...?
Game from childhood (beyond all from the backyard) was mainly pegasus - Mario Bros, Pacman, and sweets, well, I will not be original if mention Turbo chewing gums, but I will add ‘Andruty’ from me.
Full house, MacGyver, Hercules, Xena, Power Rangers, Police Academy it's a little bit later period.
What is popular among children now? Nowadays probably computer games and TV are a sources of entertainment for many children. In spite this, in the summer I often see children who rides a bike, roller skates or skateboards. They also play in ‘podchody’ (on the sidewalks full of arrows drawn in chalk). Nearby school sports field open late into the evening is always filled by football players.
I mostly remember the boysbands/girlsbands mania, when I was a fan of Backstret Boys, the rise of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, short but stunning carrier of Spice Girls, and of course our own wonder boys from Just 5. I also remember how I was "hunting" the songs on the radio, just to get them recorded on a tape. There were of course Tazos to collect and other "capsels" to trade and play with other boys at school. I also remember first encounters with computer games, such as Prince of Persia, Dark Forces: Jedi Knight, Jazz Jackrabbit 2 and many more. Finally, TV series. Just like @Mariusz Sz wrote earlier, there was OBVIOUSLY MacGyver, Power Rangers (definitely classic ones!), Early Edition, Doogie Howser, M. D., Spellbinder, The A-Team, Tajemnica Sagali, Maszyna Zmian and many many more.
Magdalena – I also played tazoos a lot. Without bragging I was pretty good at this. I had hundreds of tazoos Like I wrote in my comment – total madness. Today, I don’t even really remember the rules of the game (except those most obvious) And what about you? Do you remember?
Childhood yes I remember great time doing stupid things, without looking forward. Tamagotchi this was some awesome. I remember that i have one where the gool was to chose some girl, dating with her and in the end marry with her. This was so exciting when you have to go to gym and work hard to "buy" love :D After years I can say this was so truth and I don't realize that this simple game will be real game 15 years later. For my childhood was great time, with no worries. Now I look back and I miss it
I miss the time when kider suprise's yellow egg had two parts, so I could put there some ingredients (like soda etc) and make mini grenade :) I also miss SEGA console and the sonic game, Britney Spears, telenovelas from Brazil and many more...
I don't know what is popular now among children, but probably something like the Monster High, the Twilight or the One Direction!
The only thing I really miss is the ability to spend days playing with lego bricks without people laughing at me. Other than that, I don't think much has changed. Well, my walkman was replaced by my phone. Just like my camera. And the TV. And gameboy. And, pretty much everything else. Even the lego bricks. I don't know if that is sad or awesome. The real reason most people miss their childhood is not really because the times were so much better, but because they were much more careless and free to do whatever they like. Well, at least I do. A bit.
Great article and great childhood memories! I actually never listened to Backstreet Boys or Spice Girls… I must have been an alternative 10-year-old girl – I listened to Nirvana and Prodigy. Maybe my older brother influenced me? Yes, that must be it! I remember ring binding inserts, though! I collected them, as well as little slips of paper, the ones without holes. Do you remember them? I kept the small inserts in photo albums – I guess they even came before the big inserts, A5 size with holes? http://www.mmkrakow.pl/photo/1141709/karteczki+z+notesów Turbo and Donald chewing gums that kept their flavor for about 10 minutes and then tasted like old tires! Haha, those childhood memories. IRC? I’ve never heard about this before? Maybe I got my first computer late? Of course I had Gadu-Gadu, but it came later – I was in high school back then. Dalvia, you went to the Backstreet Boys concert??? Wow! Now that I think about it, I guess I would go too! Haha
