week 3: GOLDEN AGE OF TV SERIES

I’m sure each of you like to watch TV series. As for me, I love them. Right now I’m watching 8 TV series, so it means I spend 6-7 hours with my screen heroes per week. I have to admit, this is my favourite entertainment. When an episode is finished, I wait impatiently for another one the whole week. It seems to me that I’m not the only person who loves them so much. TV series have evolved.  There are no longer many stupid soup operas nowadays but you can find easily a number of brilliant stories, which rule the TV world.

Series are getting better and better thanks to great actors, genius directors, amazing special effects and breathtaking, intriguing stories. Sometimes we experience an episode longer than it lasts. It happens that I can’t fall asleep after watching a good piece. Good series have many fans that not only follow life of their favourite heroes, but also talk about them on Internet forums. The high quality of the stories makes television more and more competitive against cinema. When in Hollywood they are making boring romantic comedies and predictable action movies, television can create more attractive entertainment.

Right now one of the best series without doubt is “House of Cards”. It’s about a cynical congressman who climbs the ladder of power in Washington. Kevin Spacey brilliantly plays him. Robin Wright who acts his wife is also amazing.

Kevin Spacey gave The James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture at Edinburg International Television Festival in which he announced a change, which will be, or rather already is, in the TV world. He said that viewers want more complicated and drawing stories, which they can watch anytime, anywhere and on any device. It means you do not need to wait a long time for a new season. He rightly notes that thanks to flexible access to loved program viewers will be more willing to pay for it than to steal it, i.e. download illegally. Netflix, the company that has made “House of Cards”, is an American provider of online video films. Thanks to its availability on every device connected to the Internet and, or maybe first of all, intelligent stories, it has become very popular. Good content and forward-looking approach to viewers’ needs is the right recipe for a success.

Here you can find his lecture:

I believe that the future belongs to good TV series.  I think that Damian Lewis, known from „Homeland”, will most likely replace Daniel Craig as a new James Bond. Actors from „Game of Thrones” have caused mass hysteria and traffic jams in the cities they visited. Sociologists write essays about the most popular series and fans wait impatiently for new exiting episodes.

What are your favourite series? How do you watch them?

If there was Netflix in Poland would you use it?

What do you think about making all episodes in a series available on the first day of its release?

  1. This is what I call a great subject:D
I definately can relate to you, I myslef love watching Tv series too. I actully think that they become way more better that many movies. And examples presented by you prove that point. "House of cards" -great one. And it is so popular among the crowds. Especially from USA and..Poland it seams:P

    My favourite ones are
"How I met your mother" - it is very simple show with no special effects but the dialogues are simly hilarious!
I used to watch "Gossip Girl" for quite a long time but I got fed up with it, it become really boring…"Game of thrones" was interesting but ultimately all my favourite characters got killed so I was disappointed. But it was based on a book so I get it.
I really like history so historical Tv series are just perfect for me to watcg - so Rome, The Tudors, Downton Abbey. Checked, checked, checked:D

Now I love watching the new Scherlock Holmes, the adaptation is brilliant, I cannpt take my eyes of the new episode:P

Watching good Tv series is a great way of spending time:P
When they relase all episodes at one time I want to see them all one after another. So I prefer to get one episode a week - it is safer:P

  2. Unfortunately, I have nothing to say here. I don’t watch TV series at all. The last one I saw was "Big Bang Theory", two years ago. I saw maybe six episodes? All thanks to my friend, whom I visited – he proposed watching it. I liked it, laughed a bit, but I didn’t feel the urge to continue watching it at home :)

Is this series good, compared to others? I have no comparison, so maybe I just made a fool of myself by saying I liked it :)

When I look at some of my friends, fans of TV series, I’m happy, because I see how much time
    I save!

  3. I must to admit that I haven’t favorite series. I don’t spend a lot of time watching television. Actually, for 6 days per week it could not exist. When it comes to TV series I don’t watch them at all. I once watched maybe 10 episodes of dr. Hause and the same number of Prison Break. In spite of all, I prefer the movies, and I think there are so many genres and the number of proposals within them, that it doesn’t have to be another boring romantic comedie or predictable action movie. What we choose depends only on us and our interests. There are many movies that depict breathtaking, intriguing stories.

I’m not so sure that making all episodes in a series available on the first day of its release it’s a such good idea. From my own experience I know that (for me), this solution isn't certainly so good. I was watching the first 4 episodes of Prison Break on TV. A week of waiting for the next episode was an extremely long, but on the day of emissions I always sat and watched from beginning to end with bated breath. I remember these episodes because of the thrill of waiting. Later, I got from someone the entire first and second series on the CD. I watched 6 episodes one after another. It wasn’t so exciting any more, so I didn’t even watched the first series to the end. I don’t doubt that for many, access to all episodes is a big advantage, whereas on me it works in a different way.

Similar to @Marta I’m glad that I’m not a fan of watching TV series like others, even now I haven’t too much free time.

  4. @Iza- thank you for your nice comment :) I'm glad you liked my topic. I still love "Gossip girl"! I was one of the first TV series I have watched.

@Maria- "The Big Bang Theory" is right now the best comedy series in USA so you aren't fool :)

  5. House of Cards is undoubtedly a great phenomenon, the way they managed to pack so many excellent actors in there amazes me every time. The narration is so original that it really draws your attention immedietaly. My husband has already watched the second season and from what I've heard, it's brutal, stressful and exciting - just as the politics world should be.

When it comes to comedy series, my humour got a little bit too sophisticated to continue watching Big Bang Theory or How I Met Your Mother - the same jokes over and over for few seasons bore the hell out of me. There are two similar shows which I still love - "The Office" and "Parks & Recreation". Every character in these series is absolutely original and funny in his/her own way.

And my favorite series in general? Recently, True Detective reached my top 5 - totally worth watching. Breaking Bad is one of the best series of all time. I like Walking Dead too, maybe it's a little bit cheesy, but zombie apocalypse is always exciting. :)

  6. @Martyna- Yes, you are right that jokes in „The Big Bang Theory” are the same in almost every episode. However, in my opinion Sheldon’s jokes are always great! I also felt in love in „True Detective”. I have watched a whole season in one week! The story is absolutely indescribable! I highly recommend it for everyone.

  7. I used to be a tv series maniac as well, especially during the beginning of my studies. But now I see it as a total waste of time - I prefer to read a book or watch movie. I hate being addicted to a tv series, and it happened to me. I remember two TV series I could not sotp watching - Twin Peaks and The Sopranos. I was leaving to the university and all day I was thinking when I finally come back home and see what happens next. And that feeling when the tv series ended... As for now it's been more than a year that I've been clean... errr I haven't been watching any TV series ;-)

  8. Oh, finally someone mentioned Twin Peaks! I'm not sure if any TV series can beat that :) So many years passed and still it's a total masterpiece!

  9. @Tomek- I think I’m also a little bit addicted to series. Fortunately, my dream is to work in the TV series industry, so this addiction maybe isn’t so wrong :).

I think I have to watch „Twin Peaks”, because everyone says it’s the best! A new TV series to watch, I couldn’t be much happier :)!

  10. What are your favourite series? How do you watch them?
At the moment "How I met your mother", "Doctor Who" and "Arrow", although waiting for new episodes is tiring. Too bad How I met your mother is ending this season, but everything has to come to and end.

If there was Netflix in Poland would you use it?
If it was quite cheap, didn't have issues with transfer and had interesting offer. Yeah why not? Some tv series are hard to find and also you have to wait long periods of time for the download or stream to load.

What do you think about making all episodes in a series available on the first day of its release?
Yes please. No seriously give it to me. I hate waiting for next episodes. It's always like that. Something amazing is happening aaaand... "to be continued". You've got to be kidding me.

  11. 1.What are your favourite series? How do you watch them?
But favourite in overall or in this particular season? I don't have favourite in overall - thee is to many of which I appreciate and it would be unfair to choose just one. In this season it would be Noragami - this series has great animation interesting plot and is balanced considering humor and seriousness.
2.If there was Netflix in Poland would you use it?
If it would provide the content which intesret me - definitely yes.
3.What do you think about making all episodes in a series available on the first day of its release?
It has its pros and contras. Main pro is you don't have to wait! You decide when to watch it. But lets be honest - most of users will just watch whole series at once and this is bad thing. You don't have time to think about the plot, to think what will be next - you just open new episode. After this kind of marathon you are just tired and not allways you can appreciate whole series.

  12. The TV series I saw/am watching recently are Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, and Luther, starring Idris Elba.
They're both very engrossing, every single episode's plot is intriguing, the characters are complex and non-trivial. In Sherlock's case, one season contains three episode. Every episode lasts an hour and a half, so in fact it gives an impression of watching a not-so-long movie.
These two I watch on my computer (I own a DVD's of first two Sherlock seasons).
If there was a Netflix in Poland, I don't think I would use it, because I don't have much time for watching a series, and money to pay for it. For now, at least.
If there was all episodes of a series available for watching on the first day of its release, I wouldn't have a mind on this matter, as i don't have it right now. No difference for me.

  13. What are your favourite series? How do you watch them?
I love Dr House, Friends, Dexter, Top Gear UK and so many others. How do I watch them? From legal sources of course. TPB. there are so many good shows out there with so many possibilities. sometimes it's impossible to watch them all.

If there was Netflix in Poland would you use it?
I would ditch my cable TV for netflix.

What do you think about making all episodes in a series available on the first day of its release?
You're saying that they are not available the same day?

  14. What are your favourite series? How do you watch them?
It would be True Detective for sure. And of course Twin Peaks.
First I watched waiting like crazy for every monday.
Twin Peaks took me 1 week from life! You know 4 episodes a day..
If there was Netflix in Poland would you use it?
Dont think so. Im not fan of series.
What do you think about making all episodes in a series available on the first day of its release?
Great idea! But first I need to take furlough.
