Week 4: Basketball

3 years ago I started playing basketball again. After a long, long break - since high school - I decided to do some other physical activities than the gym. My choice was obvious as I was very keen on basketball when I was younger.
So I thought that I could bring up to you basic rules of this game as well as I'll try to tell you how our trainings look like. Maybe you'll decide to practice with us? It's on Sundays at 8pm.
But let's begin by analyzing how basketball field looks like:

On a basketball court there are 2 baskets, 2 teams and it is possible to gain one, two or three points during one shot. According to the official rules each team should have 5 players on a field. However, in my case we like to play with 4 players per team. There is much more space and  there is more running involved;) This is the main purpose of our weekly meetings - to get tired and of course to play amateur basketball.
We start with dividing people into two teams. Unfortunately we never know how many attendants will be present on a training. We sign up on a closed Facebook group and usually there is between 8 and 14 people. After splitting  into 2 teams we decide within each team what will be our defense model. Here there are a few options. First one is called one-to- one cover. It means that a selected player from the first team is always close to the selected player from the second team, when the other team has a ball.
Another way to set up the covering system is called "curtain":

Blue players are in a "curtain defence" set up. Each player is defending his own area, not a particular player from the opposing team. And exactly this system we try to practice on our weekly Sunday basketball meetings.
Worth mentioning could be also very basic rules. The list below is taken from the Wikipedia page:
  1. The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.
  2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands.
  3. A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on which he catches it, allowance to be made for a man who catches the ball when running at a good speed if he tries to stop.
  4. The ball must be held in or between the hands; the arms or body must not be used for holding it.
  5. No shouldering, holding, striking, pushing, or tripping in any way of an opponent. The first infringement of this rule by any person shall count as a foul; the second shall disqualify him until the next basket is made or, if there was evident intent to injure the person, for the whole of the game. No substitution shall be allowed.
  6. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violation of rules three and four and such described in rule five.
  7. If either side makes three consecutive fouls, it shall count a goal for the opponents (consecutive means without the opponents in the mean time making a foul).
  8. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds into the basket and stays there (without falling), providing those defending the goal do not touch or disturb the goal. If the ball rests on the edges, and the opponent moves the basket, it shall count as a goal.
  9. When the ball goes out of bounds, it shall be thrown into the field of play and played by the first person touching it. In case of dispute the umpire shall throw it straight into the field. The thrower-in is allowed five seconds. If he holds it longer, it shall go to the opponent. If any side persists in delaying the game, the umpire shall call a foul on that side.
  10. The umpire shall be the judge of the men and shall note the fouls and notify the referee when three consecutive fouls have been made. He shall have power to disqualify people according to Rule 5.
  11. The referee shall be judge of the ball and shall decide when the ball is in play, in bounds, to which side it belongs, and shall keep the time. He shall decide when a goal has been made and keep account of the baskets, with any other duties that are usually performed by a scorekeeper.
  12. The time shall be two fifteen-minute halves, with five minutes rest between.
  13. The side making the most points in that time is declared the winner.

Question:
1. Do you have any hobbies ?
2. Do you practice any sport on regular basis ?
3. Have you ever been "pro" sports player ?

  1. I have never been a pro sport player, neither I play any sport regulary. I used to go on a climbing wall frequently, but I have a break now because of wrist injury.
But I am a real bike lover, so whenever the weather is good enough, I use bike instead of public communication. I also like bigger trips on bike, I am planning to make two during vacations right now.
Also I very like yahting, and I also try to do it frequently. Both cycling and yahting are sports, but not the kind you can "play" ;)

Question about hobby is a general one. I have a lot of hobbies, few of them I can classify as passions - photography and singing.

  2. 1 Do you have any hobbies?
A certain of these questions are very biased and repeat a few times a year. Even once I described my hobby. I do not have time now for additional physical activity. Recently I really liked board games. Together with my friends a few times a month we play, the most well while having fun and relaxing mentally from everyday problems.

2 Do you practice any sport on regular basis?
I do not do any sport. I hope that in a few months I will have more free time.

3 Have you ever been "pro" sports player?
    I've never practiced sport professionally.

  3. Well, I have some hobbies like everyone but they are not always connected with sports. When it comes to sport disciplines, when I was younger I used to practice some sports such as jogging, basketball, volleyball and football at school. Also sometimes I would meet my friends to play football but obviously I was never a pro sport player. After I left high school I did not have a lot of time to dedicate myself to sports. However, I decided to subscribe myself to a gym so that I could improve my condition. I would do this on regular basis until I started to work. Now, even though I would really like to find a couple of hours to do something for myself. Nevertheless, I think that sport is one of the most important parts of our lives as it makes people happier and lets them stay fit and healthy.

  4. My hobby isn’t related to sports. It is the photography.

Regularly I don’t do any sports, but I very regret, and plans to change it anytime soon. It is spring so I have greater motivation and desire. I wants to sign up to the practice: yoga and pilates. I have a problem with the spine and this is for me the most beneficial sport. In addition, in the spring and summer I wants to ride a bike and ride on rollers.

I have never been a pro sport player.

  5. Yes I have hobbys. One of them is decoupage, which "is the art of decorating an object by gluing colored paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects". As you can see it is not sport or something simillar so this topic so quite not for me :)

  6. I am not a big fan of team sports, but from time to time I watch football, volleyball or basketball

I agree with Kasia that the question about the hobby is very general, because I believe that each of us has a hobby even if we are not aware of it.

I think that snowboarding, skiing and water sports are my hobbies :) I cannot imagine winter without going to the mountains for skiing and snowboarding or summer without kitesurfing or swimming.

I practiced two sports professionally: swimming and horse ridding. When I was young my parents sent me to the sports school when I was practicing swimming; from the first grade we went to the swimming pool every day, and later twice a day, plus of course we had other exercises like running, gym or football. During the weekends I did not have and any free time; I spent them at the stable since I was a professional horse rider.

I did not have a typical childhood, because most of my time at school and after school I was either swimming or horse ridding.

Although I do not practice any sport now, I still have this healthy habit to exercise a lot

  7. Me and sport, we do not go together. I do not like physical activities. I am not proud of it, I know have to start moving before I get totally rusty. But tomorrow is always better day to start than today. I like hiking. I spend all my vacations walking climbing, treking and wandering. When I visit new country or new area I always ask if there are any interesting walks around. And I like biking when summer starts I change my car to bike and I ride to my work. Not always though. Suit and bike are not meant to each other. I also like to bike with my children. I have many hobbies. But none of them has anything to do with sport. My main hobby is playing with my children I also like reading. I play board and computer games.

  8. About your questions:
    1. I have a few favorite sports. Sports associated with water are what I appreciate most, like: swimming, diving, regattas.
    2. I once practiced swimming and hockey, but that was a long time ago. Then city authorities closed ice rink and an indoor swimming pool’s tickets went up and training have become obscenely expensive for my parent’s pocket
    3. I've never been an athlete and I didn’t try to be one of them. I had friends in elementary school who tried to stay professional basketball players. This decision seriously affected their whole life and health, now they regret their decision. I think people know too little about the people who did not make to be sportsman. Because of this, young people are not aware of their decision which could be crucial to whole life.
