Week 9 [30.11-06.12.2015] Stevia

Stevia is a sweetener and sugar substitute extracted from the leaves of  Stevia rebaudiana. Stevia comes from South America. There are more than 200 species of stevia. This species comes from Paraguay. It is used mainly as the sweetener, antiseptic in medicine, in the cosmetics industry, and as the spice. In the early 1970s, sweeteners such as cyclamate and saccharin were gradually decreased or removed from Coca-Cola. Stevia is a valuable source of minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, cobalt, silicon, chromium, iron and selenium as well as vitamins such as vitamin C and a variety of B vitamins.  Also it consists of valuable vegetable protein and fatty substances. This plant can be grown from seed or from cuttings. In our climate stevia won’t survive the winter outdoors. Natural sweetener, marked with number E960.

Why is stevia better than sugar?

  •  60 - 100 times sweeter than refined sugar
  • natural herb
  • with a low glycemic index, without calories
  •  tastiest of available sweeteners
  • non-toxic

Stevia has been widely used to:

  • feed  diabetics
  • the dietary treatment of people who want to reduce excess weight
  • feed  patients with high blood pressure
  • prevent caries
  • help patients with phenylketonuria
  • help in the treatment of infections

I think stevia is good for us, because it is natural herb without sugar, it is healthy for our organism, without chemistry. It should be used regularly. Stevia is more expensive than sugar but more efficient. I think that everyone should try stevia, because it hasn’t got calories. Personally, I do not use stevia, but I’m going to start.

Questions:

  • Have you ever eaten it?
  • Is it a good idea to change sugar for stevia?

  1. I've never heard about it.
I'm never using sugar for tea, but honestly, I would like to use stevia. It's great idea.
You can use it to whatever you want, instead of sugar, not only for tea? Is it good also for example for coffee, cakes etc...?
I haven't found in your presentation, information about, where you can buy it. In almost any store or maybe it's hard to get?

  2. I've never heard about it either. However, now I did, and I definitely think that it's a good idea to change sugar for stevia. Sugar is white, sweet death, the less you have it in your life, the better. Getting rid of it totally is nearly impossible, but limiting the actual amount can help a lot.

  3. I have never tasted stevia, but somewhere I've heard about it. If stevia has so many advantages maybe it is worth to replace sugar by it. I wonder how it exactly tastes. From my experience, the most healthy food tastes much worse than their unhealthy equivalents.

  5. Unfortunately, I am a person who uses a lot of sugar. Recently I bought stevia at the health food store and I have to admit that stevia is much better than sugar. Personally, I like the taste of stevia, but you can't overdo it because it is much sweeter than sugar.

  6. I don't use much sugar, but it does seem like this stevia is a good alternative to switch to.
The sad thing is, howevewr, that even if we stopped adding sugar to our food entirely, there's still plenty of it already in other stuff, it's hard to run away from.

  9. It is very intresting article. For that what I just read I think it is a very good idea to change sugar for stevia. If you can't live without sweets I mean you add sugar to tea or coffee why not convert sugar to something healthy. I have never used stevia but I'm sure I will try it as soon as possible because I use a lot of sugar. If you can convert something unhealthy to something healthy - do it!

  10. I had once the opportunity to try stevia. Its taste was hmm... different than sugar. I added it to coffee and tea, but it tasted so unnaturally, maybe the reason for this is that I am accustomed to sugar and should use it more times to get used to it.
Currently I am trying switch from sugar to honey.
There was an extra thing, that I became to stevia - lollipops. They were better than the ones created from sugar :)

  11. I've never tried it unfortunatelly but I barely use sugar so thats why I wasn't interested in that kind of stuff. However it sounds like a really good alternative for people who can't use sugar or for someone who wants to improve their health state.

  12. Funny I have never heard of it, but from your 'promotion article' ( :D ) I would say that is a perfect replacement for sugar ! The so called sweet death nowadays is a real thing, you should avoid sugar, because it IS bad for you. For your questions I have never heard about maybe I ate it in something ? I don't really know :) but for sure I would like to test it whether it's good or bad :) As I said it might be a very good replacement for sugar :) Thanks for it by the way :)

  13. I ate some meals where sugar was replaced with stevia, and I think it can easily replace it. From what I have already noticed, some food companies use some small amount of stevia in their products and claim to make ‘fit’ products, still putting there lots of sugar, so better read labels.

  14. I have never tasted this. Your article suggests that stevia has only advantages. I disagree about defects of white sugar. In the right amount can be a great addition to many dishes.

  16. I heard about stevia few years ago when my girlfriend shown me in some store a chocolate bar sweetened with stevia. I know that my mom is also using this sweetener for cakes and other baked goods. Like it was written in article stevia is a lot sweeter than regular sugar so you don't have to add this as much as sugar and of course what is main advantage it has less calories. I didn't know much about the stevia plant where it grows and so on but thanks to that article I know now :) I also didn't know that stevia isn't toxic. It was not mentioned in article but If you want to try some stevia sweetened products there is Coca-Cola Life which contains stevia and also Sprite is sweetened with stevia.

  17. I ate Stevia few times, my mom use it to her dishes. For me it changes the taste of meal in a bad way. For the first time I tried it by accident. I ate it without anything else thinking that it's something different and it blow my mouth and tear my tongue apart. Really Stevia doesn't have any disadvantages? It must has some.

  18. Generally I don't like the sweet taste, so neither do I use usual sugar, nor stevia. Although I've heard about that, I'm still not really convinced about it's features. I think that when someone has a good reason not to eat sugar, the best choice is to give up on this at all. It's a good way to raise willpower and check oneself.

  19. I heard about stevia and I even eat it. I would like to try coca cola with stevia. In my opinion products with stevia instead of sugar shoud have lower taxes, because they have really big influence on people's health. I don't use suger or stevia because I don't like sweet drinks or meals.

  20. I tried several times but somehow I did not like. I do not drink coffee and tea at all not sweetening. For health should start to consume stevia.

  21. I haven’t eat it before. Maybe stevie is heavier than sugar, but I don’t want to change this. Also I’ve heard about it, because of my sister, but honestly, I would like to use sugar. I don’t know where I can buy it, and I think it’s hard to get.

  22. 1. I have never eaten it, but I would like to try stevia.
    2. In my opinion changing sugar for stevia is not pointless. It seems to be better for our health so why not? Health is the most important thing in our life, so if we use stevia in appropriate amounts, maybe it can be good for us.

  23. I've never got change to try stevia and dont heards about it .
Yes , its good idea to change sugar for stevia , becouse stevia is much
healthier for us as opposed to sugar. People, who use sugar in big quantity
    should switch to stevia.

  24. Hmm, I haven't heard about stevia before. Sounds like a good idea to exchange sugar for stevia. Looks like it's healthier. Maybe someday I will be determined enough to put sugar away in favor of stevia? Who knows? :)
Anyway, thanks for this article. It has been educational.

  25. Stevia has quite a specific taste, which I think makes it suitable as an additive to everything. Drinks with stevia have a specific taste, which might discourage some people. However, if we use stevia in baking, it is imperceptible and makes that we can eat your favorite cake without consequences. I think that is a great thing for people with diabetes or on a restrictive diet. Therefore, if we have a choice - choose stevia.
