Week 8 [23.11 - 29.11.2015] Aussie

Did you know that Australia is the home of one of the oldest cultures on earth? Did you know that dingoes are not able to bark, and kangaroos and emus cannot go backwards? I invite you on a short journey through distant Australia...

First, some facts. Australia is the sixth largest country in the world. The capital of Australia isn’t Sydney or Melbourne but Canberra. Canberra is an artificially created city between Sydney and Melbourne.  The head of Australia is the Queen of the United Kingdom  Elizabeth II, represented by Governor-General. There are only 3 people per square kilometer. In comparison, there are 123 people per square kilometer in Poland

Over 60% of Australia is a desert where live very dangerous animals. 24/37 most venomous snakes live in Australia. But not only snakes live there and can kill you. You can find there many scorpions, spiders, jellyfish, crocodiles, sharks and much more. Despite this, if you are careful you will live.
I would like to present to you one of many cities in Australia, the Gold Coast. Why Gold Coast? Well, I would like to move there in the future.

Gold Coast is the sixth largest city in Australia situated in southeastern Queensland. There live around 600 000 people but this area is visited every year by around 10 million tourists. It is a modern city with high-rise buildings. The main attractions are the beaches, the Lamington National Park and various Theme Parks. Because of subtropical climate people start their day late in the evening. I love that ;)

The only problem to move there are the rules. You must have a visa and it is not so easy to have it permanently. But I think after finishing studies at the Polish-Japanese Academy  of Computer Technology it should be easier.

At the end here are some interesting facts:
1.      Emus and kangaroos cannot walk backwards.
2.      Kangaroo meat is available in every supermarket. It is used as a substitute for beef and mutton, known for its low fat content (1-2%).
3.      Australia is one of the least populated countries in the world. The population density is 2.8 people per km2.
4.      The smallest city in Australia is Cooladdi located in south-western Queensland. It has its own motel, railway station, post office, grocery store, restaurant, pub and just four people.
5.      One in four Australians was born outside Australia.
6.      The longest fence in the world is in Australia. It is a 5614 km long and is twice as long as the Chinese Wall. Known as the Dingo Fence, it aims to protect the fertile lands used for grazing sheep from dingo dogs.
7.      Australian delicacy is vegemite - toast spread made from yeast extract.

Questions:
1.       What do you think about living in Australia?
2.       Are you scared of dangerous animals?
3.       Would you like to live in another country? Which one?

  1. 1. I think it would require adaptation to totally new climate, as well as some crucial knowledge regarding "surviving" in Australia, as it's definitely most dangerous continent on earth.

    2. Good question, I think it depends on actual situation and animal, but keeping in mind potential danger is very important.
    3. At the moment I don't feel a need, but I consider such thing in the future.

  2. I think that life in Australia can be very pleasant especially because of the climate (I hate winter). Of course I'm not going to leave the Poland permanently in the next few years. But of course I would really like to visit in Australia cities such as Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast, which was mentioned in presentation.

Of course I'm scared of dangerous animals. I don't like spiders, luckily in Poland they aren't dangerous.

I have heard that Australia is a very good place to live. According to many statistics, the quality of life in Australia is considered to be the highest in the world.

  3. No.1 mistake is a capital! Good you pointed this out! I'am sure to visit Autrialia one day but because of venomous spiders and snakes its not on the top of my list ^^. Cangaroos, coala bears, kookaburra birds a lot of interesting specius living in one place makes all the nationa parks and zoos so famus make them MUST SEE.

  5. 1. My brother was in Australia, my brother is after PJWSTK by the way ;) So he were here for a year and he wasn't really pleased. IT guys have not that good standard of life in Australia, they are very, very, very cheap there, so it won't give you too much money. Also he tried to find that crazy wildlife there and he found like one snake in the city, not even in a wild environment so chill out people :)
    2. Well I don't like spiders, but 'scared' is a too big word for it :)
    3. If I could I would like to live in Sweden. I love Scandinavia, I love people here I love everything about them. Beautiful people, beautiful country :)

    2. No, I'm brave man ;)
    3. Yes, I think that every man should see how to live outside the country.
I'm not talking about a short trip, but I'm talking about a lenghty stay in another country. I would like to live in Canada, Australia or New Zealand. I think that Iceland is a fun place to live too, but this country is too cold.

  8. I think that I could live in Australia - no winter and sea all around you. The dangerous animals could be a little objection, but still it's more advantages than disadvantages, so I think I could get used to it.

Personally I would like to travel around the world and maybe I will find a place, where I want to live permanently.

  10. The topic of Australia couldn't be mentioned at better time. One of polish instagram celebrities has recently gone there and my girlfriend can't stop showing me her photos and videos from there. Omitting the annoying point of this situation, I've got a great oppotunity to see how this country and living there really looks like. Honestly saying, I'm really impressed. I've got to admit that this direction is much more tempting for me than for instance USA. Also, I really like the Australian accent. My last personal trainer is Aussie and seriously, it was fun to learn some Australian slang.

I'm not really affraid of any animal, even this dangerous ones. The adrenaline that we can receive from surfing with the sharks around is worth it. That's one of my biggest dreams - to spend a couple of months in Austalia on learing to surf. Can't wait to make this dream come true.

  11. There are four main directions that I would love to visit for a longer period of time, this includes London, Stockholm, Shanghai and finally Melbourne. Honestly saying, 'to visit' isn't an adequate word. I'd like to live there, at least for some time. I have no idea why exactly these cities, but I use to dream about them from my childhood.

I totally agree with Jakub Miakisz - surfing with the sharks is the real thing! And the spiders, snakes etc.? I'm not really affraid of them, what doesn't mean that it would be a pleasure to meet any of them.

Austalia looks like a paradise for me and if scandinavian or british climate, or chinese attitude didn't suit me, I would for sure choose Australia as a place to live.

  12. I would love to go there for a while but I'm not sure about spending the rest of my life, but I can't really tell because I've never been there. I'm not scared of animals (I had a snake for a couple of years) but I really hate spiders and I know that Australia have some pretty big ones. I would like to live in another country and my dream is to live in Japan one day but involvement in work and working hours is the reason why I'm not entirely convinced.

A funny thing about Australia is that it's not as dangerous as many people in Poland think. Yes, there are many dangerous animal species, but most of them are living away from cities and you won't meet them if you're not targeting at living in some house deep in the wilderness. It is however important to read about these animals and the basic safety measures like checking your clothes before putting them on - many of the animals, like spiders, won't bite us unless we put them in danger. People were living there for so many years, it proves living there is possible. It's just about good preparation for the trip.

As for me, if I'd need to choose other country for my living, I would stick to somewhere safer. While thinking about possible living places, it's important to think not only about danger species living there, but also for example about dangerous illnesses ther (living in deep africa can sound cool unless you're stuck in the middle of ebola epidemy) and the working conditions there (everybody has some skills and there needs to be demand for these in the place we want to live).

  14. Living in Australia is interesting. There are many places which it is possible there to see, to tour.
There is a cool climate, warmly, however late it is becoming troublesome. You must be careful, to dangerous animals, because unfortunately so much is there a lot of a special animals. I think, that it through the climate. Hmm.. I think that Australia is exactly this place, however but not for life.

  17. 1. What do you think about living in Australia?
Previously i had english classes with mister Klaudiusz who was from Australia and he told us a lot about that country. Besides that it could be hard to understand Australians I think it's really nice place to live. Also I have a close friend who lived in Australia for some time and she has a family there. She also told me really great stories about that country. After that kind of recommendation I would definitely like to live in that country.
    2. Yes of course especially about scorpions and snakes!!!
    3. Good question! After last elections in Poland I think I will leave this country even sooner :P According to the profession we choose i would like to move to some country where is a lot of IT companies. USA is that kind of country for example.

  19. I heard it before that Australia is populated by very dangerous and deadly creatures. I often joke about Australia, that “Everything there, wants you dead”. There is couple of pictures and short movies that shows potential of local fauna. For example:

  20. I could live for some time in Australia just to get to know the culture and the way peopole live there. When it comes to the animals, I guess I'd live in civilized regions where the only animals I could see'd be domestic ones. Generally, I'd love to immerse myself in other cultures bu only for a short time as I'm a patriot and I love living in Poland ;).

  21. ♫ And he said,
I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover ♫

No, seriously. I'd go there, just to see if I can survive more than a week. Oh, and as for the population density - basically the whole continent is a barren desert, with almost every big city on the coastline, so it's no surprise.

  24. Living in Australia, certainly different from life in Europe, but I do not think that these differences were very large. Of course, this is a different continent, inhabited by other animals, but human behavior are very similar to ours. Australian animals arouse fear and disgust, but Australians are also afraid of our wild boar or other unusual animals there. It seems to me that I could live in another country, but for a short period of time, because I could not leave the Polish forever.

  25. Yesterday a friend told me that living there is not a tough, but you have to adapt, like check if your shoes are empty, or not going into high grass without wearing weillingtons. I'm not afraid of poisonous or venomous animals unless they can suddenly jump on me. I would like to live in many places for few years at least, Australia is not on the list, but I would definitely like to visit it. Rather Japan, US, or UAE while speaking about moving in for longer period.

  26. 1. I could live there but it's fine where I am.
    2. Definitely, yeah. They're unpredictable and that's the most frightening thing.
    3. Again, I'm fine, thank you very much. (US possibly, at best)
