Week 8 [23.11 - 29.11.2015] Anonymous Launches "Biggest Operation" againt ISIS

A group of hackers, known as Anonymous, has released a video, in which they declare a „war” against the Islamic State, due to the attacks, which terrorists have committed on November 13 in Paris.
The representative of hackers in a  published clip announced that cyber war against Islamic State had begun and every supporter of Islamic jihadists and a member of Islamic state would be hunted down. Websites that are designed to recruit new fighters and disseminate propaganda will be attacked. This „war” has a name, it’s called Operation Paris (#OpParis).

Official video:

Video translate into English:

It is well known that Islamic State works also on the Internet. Members are all over social media, they’ve got Twitter accounts, they’ve got websites where they post threatening videos. ISIS even got a monthly online magazine, called „Dabiq” that is used for propaganda and recruitment.

According to an interview done by CBS News with a social media analyst, J.M. Berger who monitors online activity of ISIS: „They have at least hundreds and probably more like thousands of fighters who are on social media, and then in addition to that they have many thousands of people who are casually or intensely interested in them as supporters online”

So far some steps have been taken. On the “Operation Paris” Twitter we can read: “At the moment are down more than 2256 Twitter accounts pro #ISIS #OpParis #ExpectUs”. Message posted on 16.11.2015.
One day later there was 5500 account shut down. "We report that more than 5500 Twitter account of #ISIS are now #down! #OpParis#Anonymous#ExpectU — #OpParis (@opparisofficial)".
10 hours ago Anonymous posted that: "We've managed to take down more than 25,000 ISIS Twitter accounts in the span of a week, all while exposing their virtual whereabouts."

Anonymous message to ISIS, which has had over 7.5 million views, is not the first call to action against ISIS made by the group of „hactivist”. After the January’s Charlie Hebdo attacks, they attacked extremist websites and reported 39 000 suspected ISIS profiles to Twitter, 25 000 of which were taken down.

But does this war really have sense? Does it change anything? Does Anonymous is capable of doing something significant? The place of one shut down site will be taken by 5 different, similar ones. What is „killing” people on the Internet against killing people in real life? Maybe the best and only option to deal with ISIS is bombing?

Anonymous is a group of pseudo hackers (script kiddies) that are having fun...

    1. Interesting approach, thanks for that. Against my article you show an article that deny what Anonymous claim they did.
Maybe I'll learn from that site how to check thousands of accounts in four days.

  2. Like we know , it wasn't for real , but I think that when it happens it could slow down a little their recruitment process .

    1. ISIS has special force, specializing in the Internet. They are responsible for communication, sites, forum, reqruitment, support.

Recently there was suspicion that terrorist from Paris used PlayStation 4 communicator to talk between each other. I don't know it was finally verified. Did you hear about it?

  3. I believe that every action against groupings such as ISIS is good. If the actions of Anonymous is just a media campaign, so let it be. Previous action on ACTA ended with a happy ending themes, which is why I hope that the ISIS also suffer due to the efforts anonymous.

    1. Thanks for your voice. You're right. Even if it won't have big impact, it's still more valuable than doing nothing.

  4. I think that all actions carried out by Anonymous are stupid. It doesn't affect in any way the operation of ISIS, because it's only virtual war. To really help we need to a real action, that will bring the desired effect. It must be ruthless policy of govertments willing to help.

    1. Thank for your comment. Everyone who want do something fight with what have the best. With skills and resources that are available for a particular person.

  5. Anonymous as a group doesn't exist, it's made of single inviduals or smaller groups that work independenly of each other, and such videos are made purely to make media buzz and scare some people. A hacker who is openly claiming that he did hack somebody or something won't be online for long enough, so those inviduals and groups all use word "Anonymous" to remain... sigh... anonymous with their actions, and those movies are very rarily made by actual people behind the idea, it's mostly bunch of script kiddies like @Hubert pointed above.

    1. Thanks for sharing your point of view. I think that in minds of many people, who read or here something somewhere, Anonymous appears as powerfull group that can cause some serious effect. Having that in mind maybe, that video/announcement, even if has little to do with truth, would be an inspiration for someone to take an action. Or some kind of relief for families of murdered people to think that there is someone who cares and stand against the attackers.

  6. Łukasz pointed it just right! Anonymous cant exists as a one group. Its very unlikely to think they are. The idea of this movment sounds from the beginig not bad but afterall its just bounch of idviduals fighting for their own purposes. I'am not sure if they can be a state of real power in internet and what could be their significant succes, how its gonna looks in a futre? Becasue of their deventalization is hard to maintain and manage this number of ppl!

  7. I've also heard about what group Anonymous announced. I have nothing against the activities of the hacker in good faith. But I am afraid that this is just meaningless announcements. It will be difficult to determine whether the actions of Anonumous are effective.

  8. As Łukasz said: Anonymous is not even meant to be a group, a group of groups or even individuals ;) but anyway I thought that this was only a display of power right ? More like showing off than actual actions, I think that if it remained silent it effects could be bigger. You know, like no one was expecting that, but after the declaration the ISIS will know how to react.
But anyway small actions against them to distrupt even the recruitment process will be good, just like Warsaw in Second World War right ? :)

    1. Interesting comparison. Anonymous said ones: We will win. We've got better hackers than ISIS.
I agree with you. If they remain unheard and unseen they could cause greater impact.

  9. I think that every action taken against ISIS is a very good idea. People should always fight with this kind of organisation. And if Anonymous, whatever they are, really do something to make ISIS life harder, thay have my 100% support.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I've heard about it earlier and in my opinion it's a good thing that people try to fight with ISIS in every way they can. However I'm affraid that it won't be very effective. If this is true it might disturb them in some way but it is not enough.

  11. I don't know why everyone is hating on Anonymous. They hacked isis website and replaced it with viagra ad:
    http://www.digitaltrends.com/web/isis-website-replaced-with-viagra-ad/
Anonymous needs to expose the people and countries supporting and funding ISIS. That can get some action.

    1. I heard about that but haven't check personally. If they could reveal such countries that would be a big step further. On the other hand it could make a really big chaos in the world or change a situation beween countries.

Seriously, maybe anonymous started having some talented hackers, but today they are mostly kids pretending to be hackers. It's easy to join them, you most often have to download some ddos application and write to your friends that you're a hacker. I like the moments that people are publicly saying they joined some of their actions - they probably never heard about police and what is illegal in the internet. Anonymous said many things, they threatened people with closing the facebook and stuff and most of these threats were just plain words.

  13. We're living in the world, where the most important thing is: information!
What's if hackers could get information about terrorists attacks and their secrets agents? Would it make a difference?
    YES! Of course!
What if we can predict their movement and kill them before they do?
Generally, I agree with the most of previous comments.
Im proud of my fellow hackers :)

    1. Thanks for coming out. I couldn't agree more. One thing that considers me a bit is that could only one time predict. If terrorists find out that some info had been stolen or they've been ambushed, they change their plans or medium. By the way, I like your role play comments.

  14. If their actions contribute to the fight against terrorism and will not harm ordinary people, it is ok. But there will always be a problem to determine the border of what can they can do.

  15. Good to know that hackers actually are trying to do something good. I don't know if they are actually doing it, but good for trying.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think it's good that hacker are helping. From what I know ISIS made a lot of contact through the internet and also through the PlayStation audio chat so if hacker can block that kind of contact they would not be able to prepare the attack. Also they deleted a lot of ISIS accounts from twitter so they are not able to communicate through twitter already. I don't know what they can do more. If they know, that they are able to stop them somehow, I support that idea.

    1. Thanks for the comment. I read about PlayStation chat too, but I don't know if it was finally verified. If they block one medium, terrorists always find another way to communicate. For instance they "go down" to the Deep Web. Don't you think so?

  17. It is the best solution to let everyone fight ISIS back in the way one is the best at. Every single display of protest is a good idea, no matter if it is directly effective or not. Still, the actions of Anonymous doesn't exclude the real powers fighting ISIS.

I don't consider bombing as the only way solving the problem, I think that we should have learned from our history that violence isn't the solution. Besides the fight with ISIS which I have no idea how should be solved, I think that we should teach our society, at least next generations, that no religion is worth killing people.

    1. Thanks for the comment. Imagine that this what happened in Paris happens near you. Would you still claim that violence isn't the right way? Recently I watched a short video filmed with a phone from a house window by some French guy. On this video two terrorists were walking the street, below the video maker, and shooting to everyone and everything. What if that French guy instead of smartphone would have a gun. How many lives he would save?

  18. In my opinion it will be really hard to find against ISIS via the Internet. It's really hard to hack these days security protocols. But maybe they are really talented and they will find some ways to find the members of ISIS. For me it is important that governments should use force to destroy organisations like ISIS.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I don't really believe in the effectivness of Anonymous' actions but still it's better than nothing. I don't understand the fact that even though governments posses a lot of date and information about ISIS it still exists.

I can fully understand that it's not that easy to destroy such well-organized organization but still, this fight didn't begin recently, it lasts for years and they had a great amout of time to do something with it! I can't believe that recent events in Paris wasn't avoidable.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oh yeah, we'll tweet them to death! They shall fear our hashtags!

  21. Every way to stop or slow down terrorist attack seems good for the public. It might not sound like a victory, but is efficient way to disturb their organization. I read article pointed out by Hubert: https://zaufanatrzeciastrona.pl/post/anonymous-nie-zablokowali-tysiecy-kont-isis-na-twitterze and honestly I hope it’s like propaganda. Why would such group lie about it? Are they only pretending?

    ReplyDelete
  22. I do not know what will be the effects of their actions, but I think it is always better to do something than to wait passively. I agree with the fact that the world must see that in Europe there is no place for such events as those that took place in France. It's hard for me to say more about this, because I do not know too much about this operation

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think their action (if it's authentic or not) is kind of useless, just like the anti-ACTA movement. But everyone does what they like, I guess. Let them do what they please.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The only one way to fight with ISIS is bombing them . Blocking facebook / twitter account cannot stop terrorist. And for me , its fake action.
