Crazy Asian
Food
As some of
you may know, Asian food can be a little bit crazy for foreigners. Of course
there are a lot of restaurants with Asian food in Poland offering sushi or
Chinese dishes but I want to focus on something more unusual. There are some
dishes mostly in South Korea from what I’ve heard (never been there
unfortunately), that are hardcore to eat even for the locals like live octopus
or hongeohoe which is fermented skate. However,
for some people it can be a real delicacy or even eaten in a romantic way as
you can see below.
When you
search for the most extreme food form around the world, 80% of the things on
the list is from somewhere in Asia. Most of the extreme food can give us the
feeling of disgust but there are some dishes which are also dangerous if
prepared in a wrong way. The best example is Fugu fish prepared in Japan. A
chef has to study for two years before he can start preparing it for the
customers.
There are
many clips on the internet with people trying to eat live octopus and similar
stuff but for me it is even hard to watch, let alone to eat it. Here is a link you
might find interesting.
Here are
some questions for you:
1. Have
you ever tried anything like that and if yes, how was it?
2. Do
you find those things disgusting or maybe it would be just a new experience?
3. Would
you like to eat anything from the things mentioned above?
Interesting, I've heard about Fugu fish, but I haven't never eaten any of that stuff.
ReplyDeleteI think it could be interesting experience. Maybe I will try fugu someday or octopus... why not? :)
I can eat almost anything.... but I hate bugs.
How about you? Have you ever tried something like that?
From the unusual for Poland stuff I tried reindeer jerky. I would love to try some of those things because I can eat almost everything just like you but some dishes are too hardcore even for me.
DeleteI’ve never tried anything like that and I will not to try, I think so.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion this is disgusting.
And no I wouldn’t like to eat anything from the things mentioned above. That’s not for me.
But for the Asian that king of food is normal. In Europe, people eats croissants, tomato soup, saussages etc, and this is normal for us. In Asia normal food is Fugu fishes.
My biggest craziness yet was eating escargot. It was totally awful but I'm still happy that I've done it. I'm really open to the new experiences and I'd like to try all the meals mentioned in the presentation, even though I'm pretty sure that they taste like they seem to - not really pleasurable. But still I think that until you try on your own, you can't criticize.
ReplyDeleteIt is still surprising how something unusual for us, can be something on a daily basis somwhere else. Like eating dogs in Asia. That's the only thing I'm totally sure I'll never try. At the same time it is incomprehensible, even for myself, because generally I eat meat.
The most "exotic" food I've eaten was octopus, clams and lobster. I don't consider them disgusting, so I guess I have a boring diet :)
ReplyDeleteI never tried that kind of food, but I would like to taste that. I like new experience with food but probably I wouldn't taste every Asian food because there are many strange dishes.
ReplyDeleteI have never eaten such food and I don't want to try most of them. Why? For me this is disgusting.
ReplyDeleteOf course, it is worth to explore foreign cultures, including local meals. However there are many things which I can not imagine to eat. For example fried spider or eye tuna.
I never tried such food and I don't want to try it in the future.
ReplyDelete"A chef has to study for two years before he can start preparing it for the customers."
Becouse the customer dies when the chef is not prepared to do this :)
In sweden there is something (a fish xD) called Surströmming. It's smells so bad that if it fells on your clothes you can only throw them away if you don't want to get killed by other people in town :D
I'm courious how many people had to die before they learned how to prepare Fugu fish perfectly.
DeleteI’ve never tried anything like that and i know that I will don't try .I don't like to discover new things in the "kitchen"
ReplyDeleteI’ve never tried such food. The truth is, I would have never tried such food, even if I was not wegetarian. I was always curious, what push people to eat such food like worms, bull testicles or controversial variety of popular dish buro (fermented rise) served on Philippines – starving dog is getting hot rise to eat, then while devouring, dog is being punched in the stomach and voilà, we’ve got delicious, humanitarian dish. That kind of food is no different for me from eating octopus. On the other hand people eat what they want. Some could say why the hell, I’m not eating that food.
ReplyDeleteI can tell you what pushes me to eat such food. It just out of curiosity. Of course there are some borders that i wouldn't cross like the thing you mentioned.
DeleteI really like to try crazy food all over the world. I didn't have much opportunities but I'm not scared of trying it at all. Definitely it's not disgusting for me. Answering the question I tried octopus many times but I would like to try some more crazy stuff. I maybe would be a little scared of that fugu fish but actually it could be dangerous to your life any other crazy food actually can't kill you so it's just case of your mind if you want to try it or not.
ReplyDeleteWell I've also tried octopus many times but it was dead and fried. What I meant was have you ever tried octopus which is still moving in you mouth?
DeleteExotic food which I aten are octopi, crabs, frogs, shrimp and very good tasted.
ReplyDeleteI made from them "spaghetti".
I only ate shrimp and them was good. Every culture has its own food , they are good for some and not for others. I think no, but if they were good prepered then maybe yes.
ReplyDelete1. Nope, I haven't tried something like that yet, but I would like to. I heard that fugu fish is tasty, and that doze of adrenaline which this experience grants you is worth trying. :)
ReplyDelete2. Eating dishes prepared differently is interesting and I treat it as a new experience, but playing with food, for instance with alive animals, is disgusting and I would rather kill someone doing it than try it by myself.
3. I would like to try fugu fish and maybe Surströmming (mentioned by Hubert), but it's not the clothes you have to throw away, it's your whole skin/hair etc. that stink for few months :p
"eaten in a romantic way" - I don't think the octopus would agree. Basically, if I look at my food and it looks back at me, I know I'll have a cheeseburger instead. And if my instinct tells me "dude, seriously, don't eat this thing" - well, that's millions of years of evolutionary success speaking, trying to keep me from killing myself.
ReplyDeleteThat octopus doesn't look very happy thats for sure. I agree that it might be a little bit disturbing when the food is watching you.
Delete1. Unfortunately no.
ReplyDelete2. I love new experiences in food. I don't think that those things are disgusting. It depends on the human psyche. Some people find that disgusting, some people not. In some places they eat worse things and still live.
3. All of them, like I said I love new experiences in food.
Nope, I never ate and I guess that I'll never try eating something like that, but I do respect that every region has it's own food and it's own "specials", so I can understand people with other taste.
ReplyDeleteI tried octopus although she was not alive but still. Unfortunately I had no opportunity to try the Fugu fish but I am sure that one day I will try it. But I think that eating things such as worms is disgusting. I like challenges, especially those culinary so I am sure that I will try some of these but not everything is for me to accept.
ReplyDeleteOk, so I will start with questions: for the first one I have never tried any of this stuff, You know we have our unique dishes but they are entirely normal for us so they don't really count. It's simple I tolerate and respect the habits and those special dishes but I wouldn't like to try them. I am crazy about Sweden so I would like to try Surströmming - You know rotten fish that smells so bad that it should be open in some container with water but I would like to do it not for the taste but for the "small bite of culture". But I wouldn't like to try any stuff mentioned, for me it's just stupid to taste highly poisonous fish ;)
ReplyDelete3. nopenopenope.avi like I said, I think it's just stupid. You know in Japan (I think) it's common to prepare shrimps when they are alive. I think it's just an unnecessary cruelty
Fortunately, I haven’t tried anything from the strange stuff described in the article. Most of this products, as far as I’m concerned, are disgusting and inedible. If I needed a new experience, I’d opt for bungee jumping or getting a tattoo ;). If I was really determined to try some crazy Asian food, I’d try some seafood that was at least somehow similar to the things I see daily on Polish tables ;)
ReplyDelete1. No, I haven't and hope never have to.
ReplyDelete2. Yuck, it's repulsive. New experience? Yeah, definitely... No doubt about that.
3. Most definitely not.
I realized that Asians have crazy ideas about food, but I never dared to try any of these strange dishes. It seems to me that it is often playing with fate, for example, eating a live octopus, which can reportedly lead to suffocation. Besides, it is not a cool experience (is downright disgusting) for me because I do not like eating anything about what I do not know how it can affect my body. It seems to me that if I were to try the strange Asian Foods, it would be sweet, but without the addition of various worms and crustaceans.
