How to save money

                               Sources: http://www.apartmentsetc.com/money-saving-tips/

Saving money is one of those things that is easier said than done. It requires more than just minimizing costs. In this presentation I will present a few tips how to determine the real potential for saving, control your spendings, and in particular, how to pay yourself.

Steps

1. Determine why you want to save. It is easy for the short-term goals. If you want to buy a video game, find out how much it costs. If you want to buy a house, determine how big a deposit you will have to make. In the long-term goals such as retirement, you will require more accurate planning. First of all, get rid of your debts.

2.Write down all your expenses. Write down all your expenses for a few weeks or a few months. Be very meticulous and try not to overlook even the smallest expenditure.

3.Limit your spending. Take a look at all your expenses after a month or two. You'll
probably be very surprised when you see 300 zł spent on sweets or 100 zł issued for parking tickets.

*Think, if you can save money on fuel, or give up the car?
*Think about giving up the phone and either use only a mobile phone, or save using the
free version of Skype.
*Think, if you can live without your cable TV or satellite TV.
*Try to save on bills for utilities (water, electricity, gas)
*Think about whether you can limit meals outside the home. Buy food in bulk quantities.
*Try to cook more at home. You can probably save a lot of money on food.
*If you are a smoker, think about reducing or quitting smoking (if you smoke one pack a
day it costs you 3000 zł per year)

4.Often we buy what we don’t need
Most of us do not need a very large number of things that we buy. Think about it. In
particular, we aim here at clothes. How many clothes do we buy and then we never wear them or possibly assume once or twice? I myself have quite a few pairs of pants and sweaters in the closet and I walk continually in the same ones. Apparently, most people war only 20% of the clothes they possess.

5.Construct a budget. construct a budget to know how much money you can spend

6.Stop using your credit card. Pay for everything with cash or money order. It is much
easier to spend too much money if you withdraw money from your credit card because you're not sure exactly how much money there is.

7. Open interest-bearing savings account. Much easier to keep track of your savings if you keep them on the side of the money for expenses.

8. First of all, reward yourself. Savings should be your priority. Put savings into your
account as soon as you get your paycheck. An easy, effective way to start saving is to simply deposit 10% of your salary.

If you get a payment of, say, 2000.98, move the dot one space to the left and deposit this
amount: 200. It works well and does not require any great thought, after a few years you can earn a "large sum of money". You have an automatic transfer from checking account to a savings account.

Tips
If you receive unexpected cash, put all or most part of it to the savings account. This way,
your savings’ goal will be achieved faster.
When planning a vacation, use special occasions by searching the internet. Some sites offer discounts on holiday resorts because they are partners.

Warnings
Never go shop window watching, having money on you. You will be tempted to buy useless things. Go shopping only with a predetermined shopping list.
As long as you are in a really desperate situation, try not to keep an eye on your health.Do
regular check-ups, which can prevent huge expenses when your health is in a really bad
shape. Try to prevent the causes instead of spending a fortune on mitigation.

Motivation

How do you motivate yourself to get up early, to do your project on time, etc.?  I’ll present a few tips that can help you manage your time more efficiently.

1.Set your goals. It is absolutely essential. Before you start to do something, think carefully about what you want to achieve. It is much easier to be motivated when you know what will be the effect of your actions. What are the goals set? The more ambitious your goal, the more stimulating it is  for your mind to achieve it. Of course they should not be completely impossible to fulfill, but allow yourself for a little bit of fantasy. Determination  increases your efficiency. If your goals are too big you-do not change them, just break them down into smaller ones, think about different elements of a greater purpose.

2.Plan exactly what you have to do. Being aware of how you want your project to look like  is not always enough. Planning also allows one to see the entire process, not only the effect. Every complex task is composed of simple elements. List specific steps that will lead you to achieve that goal: it will be easier for you to take the individual elements of the process. The whole project/assignment no longer seems so difficult, because it will be made up of simple steps. It will also allow you to track your progress. Knowing the place where you are will improve your efficiency.

3.Use the method of five minutes. When you have to do something you do not want to, do it only for five minutes. Tell yourself, "five minutes, no longer." Having it I mind it will be much easier for you to endure it, and what's more, once you do something for those five minutes, you'll do it much longer than planned.

4.Visualize the goal you want to achieve. Find five minutes to visualize the effect of your work, any task you have planned, think how it will be when it is ready. How do you feel? Let it be positive images. See the effect of your work in the best possible light, feel the enormity of the knowledge you have  earned. Think now about what  you have done, how you have achieved it. Enjoy the result of your work.  Try to picture created was rich in detail. Do this exercise at least once a day, for a few minutes. It is one of the most powerful tools to achieve true motivation.

5. Be positive. Pay attention to your thoughts. Watch them all the time, especially when you think about the task awaiting you. When it turns out that they are negative, replace them with positive ones. Stop with all the "I can’t", "it is difficult". When you talk to yourself, you're right. When you think you can do it, it would be easy. Your efficiency is greatly increased. You have great prospects and believe in them, and you'll work much better. What's more, the prospect of success immediately stimulates your motivation.

6.Unsubscribe benefits. Take a blank piece of paper and pen and start to write out all the benefits that come to your mind in connection with the execution of the task. More free time, the joy of a loved one, higher salary, the opportunity to meet friends, learn something new. Not all must be strongly argued and logical. Print everything that you can think of, even if your reasoning is ridiculous or meaningless. Once you have created this list, you will approach your task differently.

7.Listen to motivational music. Has any music/song motivated you to do sth? This phenomenon is called  emotional conditioning, otherwise known as an anchor. Stimuli evoke in us certain emotional states. How do you use it? With all the ways that you have just read, you can evoke strong feelings of motivation. Choose a song which you  have not listened before. While listening to it, your brain will concentrate on positive emotions, motivation to do certain task.

8.Reward yourself. Good old method, which we all love. Think about how you can be rewarded for achieving the goal. What do you do when you manage to do the job well? Eat something sweet? YGo to the movies? Allow yourself an hour of relaxation? The choice is yours.

Try everything and see what works for you best. Perhaps one of these ways  is best for you, you will always have to practice it before performing various tasks. I use most of them.

Winter activities

Winter activities

The days are getting shorter and colder, trees lost their leaves long time ago and we already saw the first snow. Be ready because winter holidays are approaching!

There are some places where you should go to enjoy this wonderful snowy weather, and these are the mountains. What can you do in the mountains during winter? The answer is obvious: sliding down the slopes :) There are various alternatives to have fun on the slopes! First of all, you can ski! However, we have several types of skis such as: Alpine, Freeride, Telemark, Freestyle, Slalom or Monoski.

A short video about the freestyle skiing, made by the Polish company Modest South:

Another, well-known and popular winter sport is snowboarding. Here, same as with skiing, there are several types of boards, such as: Freeride, Freestyle and Carving / Alpin boards.

What is interesting, nowadays people come up with new interesting and, somehow, crazy winter attractions, and one of them is Helisking. What is it? They take you to a mountain peak by helicopter and later you slide down 'virgin' slopes!

                                     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjHFOXTvqaA

Of course, if you are going to Heliskiing for the very first time you should choose less steep slopes and NEVER FORGET ABOUT THE HELMET!

Another winter attraction is snowkiting, skiing or snowboarding with the kite.
However, if you want to try the snowkite you do not have to go to the mountains! What you only need is appropriate equipment, good flat field with snow, wind and a good attitude :)

                                   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QPcr5pP4g8

When we think about winter sports we cannot forget about cross-country skiing and ski-jumping as Poland in those categories have two very famous sportsmen: Justyna Kowalczyk (cross-country skiing) and Adam Małysz (ski-jumping). Although, everyone can try cross-country skiing, I believe that ski jumping is only for professionals, thus it is a winter sport that most of the people can only watch.

Moreover, what is interesting, now you can more often meet disabled people on the slopes, sliding down the slopes on the so-called sit-ski. The following video shows a brief history of a skier who because of the accident cannot walk. However, he did not give up his dreams and continues to do what he loves the most!

                                    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xjUUf_sK84

However, you do not need snow or mountains to have fun during the winter. There is another winter activity that you can enjoy wherever you are, and it is ice-skating. It is not only cheap and a very pleasant way to spend your free time, but you can also do it almost in every big city in Poland. For instance, in Warsaw there are many ice rinks, which everyone can use. Perhaps the most famous and crowded ice rink in Warsaw is a free ice rink in Torwar or the one next to the Palace of Science and Culture.

Overall, I am a big fan of winter sports! When I was only 4 years old my parents took me to the mountains and for the very the first time I had skis on my feet, and since then I cannot remove skis from my feet during the winter. :) Also, when I was 14, I started snowboarding. I love both skiing and snowboarding, and literally I cannot imagine my life without them! Every year, I always look forward to see the first snow and go for a trip to the mountains!
In addition to winter sports, I associate the winter with drinking hot chocolate, mulled wine and the smell of oranges :)

Questions:
1. What do you associate with the winter?
2. Have you ever tried any of these winter sports?
3. Can you think of any different winter activities that I did not mention?

PETA

PETA

Everyone knows that modern media are very competitive. Nowadays, people at every stage of their lives are literally bombarded with a variety of visual images; from art and advertising to movies and television. Therefore, because we live in a visually-saturated culture, modern media have a difficult task to do to draw people’s attention. Since depicting nudity, especially undressed women, has always been ‘eye-catching’ for human beings, thus it should not be a surprise that over the last few years controversy and nudity have become necessary to get people’s attention.

One of the best known animal rights organization People for Ethical Treatment of Animals —in short PETA— has always rolled out very creative and visible, yet, highly controversial campaigns to struggle towards animals’ rights. PETA promotes not only vegetarianism but also raises awareness of cruelty to animals.

                                   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTZQnQeAPJc

Most famously PETA is known for their risqué ads featuring nude or scantily clad women and now also men. The idea behind PETA’s campaign is usually to protest how humans use animals in inhuman ways for eating, clothing or even for their own entertainment.

As we all known modern media have become very competing, thus showing the female’s and male’s ”objectification” and the nudity is, to some extent, essential and necessary to attract people’s attention

In advertisements both women and men have become the objects to be looked at, however, the way in which we look at them are diverse. For instance, when men do appear in the nude in PETA campaigns, their ads tend to be ironic, funny, humorous, and full of personality.

PETA, “Wear Your Own Fur” 2011

On the other hand, women in PETA’s campaigns are mainly seen as sexual objects and “animals”. For instance, Pamela Anderson is not only presented as human flesh in the PETA’s campaign, but also as a sensual object, to attract more men’s “gazes”.

PETA, “All Animals Have The Same Parts” 2010

Although many people believe that PETA’s campaigns are controversial and “exploit” and “objectify” male and female human bodies, hey do it for an important issue—to bring attention to the plight of animals.

PETA's mission is to get the animal rights message to as many people as possible. Unfortunately, these days this is a hard task, thus PETA decided that the best way to attract people is to show “sex”, “nudity” and human objectification in its campaigns.

Indeed, I believe that PETA does some very good work bringing issues concerning animal rights to the media, and by extension the public’s attention.
Therefore, I believe that whether you like their methods or not, PETA does get noticed and that is the most important thing.

Questions:
  1. What do you think of PETA organisation and its campaigns? Do you think that PETA's campaigns have any impact on society?

  2. PETA often involve celebrities in their Animal Rights Causes. Do you believe that it is a good practice to involve famous people in their campaigns? Can you think of any advantages/ disadvantages of celebrity activism?

                                 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAEGbuSWd9E

  3. Do you agree with the statement that in the modern media controversy, sex and nudity have become necessary to draw people's attention?

Women's Magazine

Women's Magazine

It might be controversial to say that our modern society has an unhealthy obsession with the images of beauty and ‘ideal’ body images. However, there is the evidence to suggest that the constant flow of images that stem from certain norms in our society do have an effect on the masses, and there can be little doubt that modern society's obsession with appearance and their attempt to achieve the 'ideal' body image is not only unrealistic for the majority of people but also unhealthy.

For instance, when we type in google “women’s magazine covers’’ the only images we see are those “unrealistic”, “perfect” women.

Also, when we look at the graph from GraphJam.com about what information is the most popular on the covers of women’s magazines, the most likely thing to be put on the cover page are new diets or how to loose your weight.

So how is the media (especially, women's magazines) presenting female body images?

Nowadays, fashion images are not “reality” but an artfully arranged manipulation of visual elements. In today's media standards in order to be a perfect woman you must be skinny, tall and of fair complexion.
Therefore, yesterday’s sex symbols would be considered fat and short by today’s standard.

Moreover, in general media distort the women conception of perfect women body image, since all images are computer generated (thus unnatural) images of perfect women. Because of that viewers believe that they can achieve this perfect body image by being on a diet, doing plastic surgeries or using particular promoted cosmetic products.
So what are the effects of ‘ideal’, yet, ’unrealistic’ female media’s images on women?
In my opinion the main effects are:
  • growing number of eating disorders among women
  • growing popularity of plastic surgeries
  • and also diet industry is booming up
However, nowadays some media and beauty companies have already started to fight against the growing trend of 'ideal’ body images presented by the media. For instance, let’s have a look at Dove’s campaign about generating perfect women for a advertisement using advanced technology.

                                   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHqzlxGGJFo

In this video, we can see how an average girl has quickly become “super attractive” and “ideal” by only using computers programs…

Another film from Dove’s campaign for Real Beauty.

Questions:

  1. Do you think that our idea of beauty should be defined by the images that we see in the media?
  2. What are other side effects of female unreal images, presented in women's magazines', on both young and mature women?
  3. What do you think of Dove's campaign for Real Beauty?

Social Media Revolution

The impact of social media on customer relationship management

Nowadays  people are spending more and more time online. Social networking sites, forums, blogs, microblogs, etc. are used as a medium in business, This is a place where business customers complain about the service, but also they praise products and exchange opinions about them. Finally, the Internet has become one of the key channels used in marketing and PR.

The main social networking portal that brings together people of different nations, different preferences and interests is Facebook - if it were a country, the number of its users (800 mln) would  put it in the 3rd place of the biggest ones. Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Britney Spears have more "followers" on Twitter than the population of Sweden, Israel, Graces, Chile, and Australia.

Over 50% of Internet traffic in the UK is directed to your Facebook page. In Poland, about 12 million users are registered in the largest social networking site. YouTube has become the second largest Internet search engine, after Google. Responding to the information within 24 hours of their publication is already too late .... The speed of the spread of information, general access as well as "volunteers" publishing on the web – these are the things  companies will have to face in the near future. As many as 78% of consumers trust recommendations, and only 14% of advertising.

Social media provide power and control of customers to  businesses. Companies need to realize that right now the voice of the unit can be picked up by the masses. The strength of social media has already been proven, for  example “The Times newspaper reported that within 4 days of the video being posted online, the United Airline's share price fell by 10%, costing stockholders about $180 million in value.”

The social revolution that we are witnessing prompts reflection and the evolution of the activities carried out in the area of marketing and customer service. It is a factor that is forcing companies to change the approach to the customer. Only skilful use of tools such as CRM, BI, RTD and their integration with social networking sites will help learn better the behavior of customers and respond to their posts (the positive and negative).

Analyzed social networking sites provide a wealth of knowledge about customers, trends, about what the market requires and what is expected. Most of the users make public information about their own preferences, hobbies, interests - information becomes invaluable at a time when the database is linked to customers. Only the skillful use the information about the experiences of customers gathered on the Internet, which improves future prospects of a company. To be able to do this you need to to link the required marketing activities with the creation of appropriate tools to carry out technical and business process transformation in such a way as to optimize the potential used by social networks, etc.

Social Media is not only a fan page on Facebook, or publishing blog posts and microblogs - it is also, and perhaps above all, a community around a brand, a group of volunteers who will work with us to achieve common success. This phenomenon used in the right way can develop a company. Lenovo has decreased by 20% the activity of customers in the call center and  opened a portal dedicated to  its customer service. Dell sells computers through Twitter will have a total value of $ 3 million. 37% of the population had known about a new model of Ford Fiesta via social media before it was presented in the U.S. 25% of the marketing in Ford is devoted to  social media. As many as 24% Genius.com social media leads are converted into sales.

How companies are able to effectively communicate with customers?

They can proactively respond to the information to maintain positive relationships at every possible moment and effectively use social media tools to be a part of the social revolution. They can use the social CRM and other tools in conjunction with their experience .

Properly designed tools and business processes help companies communicate effectively with customers on different channels and a customer life cycle. Specialists are able to adapt their business processes and implement the tool in such a way that they are used in an optimal manner and in accordance with their intended use.  Companies can understand better their customers and their social networking experiences through the analysis of the data collected with the use of Social CRM, which enables to predict customer behavior better and to adapt the organization to the rapidly changing society and business environment.

Questions

1) What do you think about the use of social networking sites to communicate with business-to-customer?

2) Are Polish customers prepared for communication with companies in this new way?

3) Have  you observed change in the method of communication in the companies whose services you use?

Drawing the line

Drawing the line
Islam is the world’s second biggest and fastest growing religion. As today, most of the nations have their borders open, Muslims (and others) are spreading all over the world and that’s generally a positive thing. It makes some  kind of connection between different cultures and nations. But I think  that we should also see negative issues, connected with the popular full-tolerance approach.

At first, I would like to say that I have nothing against multicultural Europe (I even like it in some way) but there are some boundaries. I’m referring here to the situation that occurred in Denmark a few weeks ago, where Muslim’s local board have decided not to provide the traditional 1000 dollar Christmas tree for the community. The board claims it is caused by financial problems and nothing would be odd in this situation, if not the fact that three days earlier they had a 10 000 dollar Muslim celebration(playground, bungee jumping etc.).  So we have an absurd example of intolerance of the Muslim majority. It’s the same as if I invited some guests for a movie to my house and after some time they would decide that I cannot watch movies I like due to their quantity dominance.

The second occurrence that was shocking happed in London on 16th of September outside the US Embassy. It was caused by the film the Innocence of Muslims by Sam Bacile, which I must say is cheap, lame and could’ve been insulting for someone. But, the reaction of Muslims (I’m not even broaching the Benghazi issue which happened about a week after), was unacceptable and indicates how dangerous they might become.

I think they are forcing themselves to Europe while no one is inviting them. If they don’t like it here ,they should go back to their homelands and burn whatever they want, in there.

I know some Muslims, which I admit are intelligent, educated people and I sympathize with them but  they are an exception. Most  Muslims are not compatible with our Western(most of them, don’t even respect us) culture and they never will be.

Fortunately, in Poland we don’t have this problem yet. The number of guests (even if they have citizenship, they are still guests) in our country is perfect for now, but Denmark and UK occurrences should be a warning for everyone.

I could write up many stories like this, but painting Muslims in a bad light is not the point. The point is not to allow for the popularity of full-tolerance approach. Solving this case will be extremely difficult as we don’t want to be perceived as an intolerant and racist nation but still have to draw the line.

The question is: What do you think Europe should do about this situation?
