Week 13 [18.01-24.01.2015] R.I.P. David Bowie

Legendary singer and songwriter David Bowie quietly died of cancer. He fought for half a year with a terrible disease, but was unable to defeat the illness. On 8 January David Bowie turned 69 years old.

David Bowie was one of the most influential musicians of his time. He changes all the time, and changed his tone. David Bowie was a constant revolution of style.
He did not recognize the label. Music, fashion, sex were all in his arsenal. In art, he was a true chameleon.

In his early years he enthusiastically studied Buddhism, was interested in pantomime, and in 1967 he released his first album called-"World of David Bowie's".

World fame came to Bowie in the 70s. A Song “Space Oddity” became a hit in 1969, conquering the British and American charts. Perhaps Bowie's most famous incarnation came with the release of his fifth album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars" in 1972. He performed as Ziggy Stardust, a flame-haired, androgynous alien rock-star intent on bringing a message of hope to young people on Earth. In 1975, David Bowie, together with John Lennon recorded the song “Fame”.

A decade of silence at the beginning of the twenty century gave a reason to believe that he retired from music. That was a surprise when in 2013 he released the studio album “The Next Day”, which immediately topped the British charts.

His latest album “Blackstar” was released just a few days before the death of the legendary musician.

Notable Bowie’s quotes grabbed together by Esquire magazine:
“Once I asked Lennon, what does he think about what I do? It will work, he said, but it's just a rock 'n' roll, with putted a little lipstick on it.”

“I so often invent a new way that today I think that initially I was plump Korean girl.”

“It amazes me that people take seriously everything that I say. Even I do not take it seriously.”

“I write about suffering - my own and others. The rest do not interesting me.”

“I am not a prophet and not a man of the Stone Age. I'm an ordinary mortal with the makings of a superman. And I'm still alive.”

According to the Rolling Stone magazine, Bowie hit the 100 greatest singers and composers of our time.

  1. You can say that I am strange, but I didn't know about his music. I heard about him but never had the need to know more. After hearing some of his songs it became clear. It's just not the type of music I like listening.

  3. It's a first time when I hear about a person like David Bowie. It's hard for me to anything meaningful to write about him. I listened two songs but in general this is not my music taste.

  4. I'm not even sure if I know any of his songs. I'm sure I've heard them in the radio, but that's all experience with his music that I've ever had or will have. But I realize he was an icon, and as such, now he will grow even bigger than he ever could when he was alive. So I guess, in a way, that's a win.

    1. he was not so popular, as The Beatles for example, but you are right, was an icon, was a man that always tried to go own way.

  5. Many people keep telling me he was a brilliant musician and every time I feel a bit ashamed because I can't even name one of his songs. He died at the age of 69 struggling with cancer, just the same as Alan Rickman who died 4 days after Bowie.

    1. Even more great peoples gone at earlier 2016. For example: http://hollywoodlife.com/2016/01/15/celebrities-who-died-2016-saddest-deaths-2016-david-bowie-photos/ Heard black humor joke about great event in the heaven...

  6. Sorry but I've never heard about this guy. I like music... it's life saving and motivating. But not this kind of the music. Even at this moment I've got youtube with "Arctic Monkeys".

He's probably a legend.... but not for me.:(
After my song, maybe I will give him a chance once again. At least I can do that.

  7. The only song of his that I know is "Space Oddity". And that's only because Chris Hadfield did a cover onboard the ISS. So, not really a fan. Still, it's pretty sad seeing famous people go - surely he must have been a legend for some.

(can we please stop flooding facebook with his songs now?)

  8. I've never heard about this guy either. I don't know, maybe I'm just ignorant and it's not my type of music but for some reason I didn't listen to any of his songs up to now, at least not intentionally.

Still, sad to see famous people go.

  9. I really think that David Bowie was a great and very talented artist. You can not say that he was just a musician. He created his own amazing style and still surprised his compositions.

  10. I've heard about him before and I associate his name. It seems to me, that I don't know his music. His music is surely worth the attention.
Thanks for the article and something new for me. In my spare time certainly I will listen some of his songs.

It's interesting to read a little about David. I was never into any of his songs, but I probably should give him a try. A pity more and more great people are leaving this world.

  12. Unlike the most of others here I know David Bowie. I zone out and start daydreaming when I listening his music. Bowie is truly an artist. Unfortunately, most of people know him after his death. He made great hits like „Space Oddity” or „Changes”. His cooperation with Queen resulted in „Under Pressure” – the greatest hit.
Did anyone of you know that he was an actor too? He earned a considerable amount of success in the art world and as an actor in films like „Labyrinth” and „The Prestige”.
    To summarize, a quote:
„There's old music, there's new music, and there's David Bowie. „

  13. I knew Davids Bowie music but it wasn't really my type. Of course it is a great tragedy that he died because of cancer. Its a shame that people like him become more popular after their death.

  14. Well, it's always sad news when a famous and meaningful person dies. I don't listen to his music a lot but I know that he influenced a lot of musicians, for instance Joan Jett, who later on followed their own path and created unforgettable music. However, I don't really understand his strange make-up but art is art and I guess that he had some reason for painting his face in such strange colours :).

  15. I respect David Bowie a lot for what he brought to the music. He is a legendary artist and I think that everyone should know a little bit of his works. His music was very original and diverse and I appreciated him for it. His death was a great loss.

  16. It's not my type of music at all and I'm not a fan of David Bowie but of course I respect him and what he done. For many people his death is a great loss and i understand that. If one of my favourite artists would die I would be very sad too.

  17. Unfortunately that isn't mine type of music , i like deep house and black songs , You know what I mean

  18. Well, ok. It might be weird - but I like 3 or 4 songs by David Bowie. I don't really feel his legacy - he gave a lot to music, maybe a lot of my favourite artists based on him but still - I don't really like his music.

  19. I enjoy his music, I listened to it about 2-3 years ago a lot. I think that the variety of his songs is great, he connected many genres of music making the masterpiece of it. I regret that he died, cause his last 2 albums were, in my opinion, the best ones.
And the way that he died... 2 days after releasing album about death, he just passes away... how cool is this? :P

  22. I was really shocked when I heard in the Sunday morning news that Bowie died. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I always thought that he would live old age, and yet he just turned 69 and only two days later he closed his anisocoria eyes. His death made a great impact on the way I'm perceiving his latest album, "Blackstar". Especially, the song "Lazarus" and its video clip, gains a new meaning, now that we know he was struggling cancer for 18 months, with whole world not knowing about it. As if he wanted to say "Goodbye" to all of his fans, knowing he will die soon.
It must be said, that Bowie was also a great actor and portrayed many roles, for ex. Pontius Pilate in "The Last Temptation Of Christ", Phillip Jeffries in "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me", Nikola Tesla in Christopher Nolan's "The Prestige", and many more.
As a musician, beside his solo career, he collaborated with many other musicians, like Queen, Placebo, Nine Inch Nails, John Lennon, and so on. Very often, the results of these collaborations were huge hits. For example, "Under Pressure" with Queen: https://youtu.be/YoDh_gHDvkk
David Bowie's death is a huge loss for music industry (and music in general) and for film industry, as well. I'll be missing him a lot.

PS. Oleksandr, thank you for this presentation.
