Week 13 [18.01-24.01.2015] Star Wars

Recently in theaters was released the latest movie from the famous series of sci-fi movies:  “Star Wars the force awakens”. It's hard to find someone who hasn’t seen any Star Wars movie. Star Wars universe found a lot of fans around the world, but also there are many people who don’t like Star Wars. One thing is certain, movies from the universe of Star Wars had a great influence on sci-fi cinema and even our culture.

But let's start from the beginning. The father of the universe was George Lucas with his studio LucasArts. In 1977 they released their first movie from the Star Wars series. The first movie was called simplyStar Wars”, but with time it changed its name toStar Wars Episode IV: A New Hope”. The success was huge. The production cost 11 million dollars and grossed 775 million dollars. Then consecutively in 1980 and 1983  they created the next two movies:The Empire Strikes BackandReturn of the Jedi”. Thus they ended the original trilogy. For the next movie fans were forced to wait 16 years, and George Lucas made a movie starting the prequel trilogy:” The Phantom Menace”, which, together with  next two movies, tells a story about the events before the original trilogy. Next  movies were released every 3 years and were called:Attack of the Clones” andRevenge of the Sith”.

But Star Wars is not just films, it's a great universe containing books, comics, video games, TV series, animated series, card games and many other things. All of this has been called the Expanded Universe. And what are “Star Wars”? The world of Star Wars is based on the concept of power, energy that can be controlled by someone gifted with an innate ability and properly trained to be able to use it. The power can be used to move objects, read and control thoughts and even win a battle. The people using the Light Side of the Force are Jedi, while the user of the Dark Side is Sith or Dark Jedi

The action takes placeA long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....". This sentence appears at the beginning of each movie and has become a part of global pop culture. Star Wars was so popular that fans created a religious movement Jediism, which is inspired by elements of Star Wars and a lot of people recorded their religion as "Jedi" on national censuses. The world of Star Wars changed forever when the Walt Disney Company bought LucasArts along with the rights to the brand. In this way, on December 18, 2015 in theaters appeared the latest part of a new trilogy called “The force awakens”.

And even in military, because in USA, they tried to make a lightsaber. :)

If it comes to Star Wars movies - those are great! Last movie was amazing too. And I'm not talking like that only because I'm BIG fan of sci-fi movies. If even sci-fi haters (most of them) are saying it's good, then there's something to it.
Yes! There are a lot of Star Wars books. How many? - no idea

I've heard those, also good/great/amazing but I didn't have a chance to check it up. Have you something to say about it, or you're just a fan of movies?

People don't agree in few things about Star Wars. Which trilogy is better, or buying LucasArts by Walt Disney was a good choice.
My opinion: Very good. Why? Because they start expanding movie universe. Meaning - we don't have to wait on next Star Wars Awakens. There will be "Rouge One" movie in this year, and film about young Han Solo is in planning phase.

As far as I know they've done it (it's just plasma, centered in magnetic field), but... they don't have batteries capable to supply it with enough power. But, maybe in the future :)

  3. I like star wars, however I am not a big fan of it (I don't collect items connected to star wars). Currently I didn't watch the newest episode (but I will in the near future).

  4. I don't like Star Wars. I don't like these type of movies. Difficult to me achieve to the subject. Sorry :)

  5. Yes. I agree.

World of Star Wars is awesome, culture-shaping and influencing many spheres of many people's lives. Personally, I don't like the movies as much as the whole backstory behind them, contained in books, comics and games.

  6. Honestly I don't like science fiction movies. There are too abstract for me. I admire those who are a big fans of Star Wars. I wonder what people are interested to watch this type of production. It may scenography, directing, edit or plot...

  7. Next station- Star Wars hype! As a StarWars fan I have to say that The force awakens was rather dissapointing for me. I wasn't worried when Disney bought LucasArts, because I knew they have proper resources to make good movie, but sadly there was no good story behind it. The main plot was almost a copy of IV part, rebels have to destroy enormously big gun capable of destroying whole planets at once, not easy but they manage. Of course it's a big shallowing, but yet I was expecting something more unpredictional.

  8. I don't watch movies often in general, and after first Star Wars, I don't know, maybe it didn't impress me enough, maybe I just don't like that type of movies, so I don't have anything to say in this regard, but I can see that it's a great movie for majority of people.

  9. This is a very difficult subject for me. I've never watched a movie from the Star Wars series. Why? I just really don't like science fiction movies.
I don't know anything more about this series, so it's hard for me to express my own opinion.

It is a popular series. I believe it is a good movie. However, not everyone likes science fiction movies.

  10. Hype, hype everywhere. Don't get me wrong, I was pretty hyped myself, when I first heard they're making another one. But the moment I saw Stormtrooper-themed socks in Biedronka, something broke inside of me.

The movie itself was nice. I don't really get people complaining about the plot being "a copy". It's another part of the same movie, of course it's gonna be similar.

Also, (insert mandatory i-liked-star-wars-before-it-was-cool disclaimer here)

I love SW and especially SW 7. I love how it turned into something that proves, that movie creators are learning from the mistakes. I really hope the new trilogy will be something awesome and the story in it will be well shown. I hated it how the old 6 chapters were nothing compared to the books even though the core background could be easily presented if all these silent or lame executed scenes were cut out from the old movies.

  13. I’ am a great fan of Star Wars trilogy. I thought that everyone is, but after reading posts I’am disappointed.
Recently, I watched all movies of series to remind them. One of the most impressive things about the original "Star Wars" movie when it was released in 1977 was that the special effects and fantastic surround sound were brand-new. Of course, the story was unlike any other that had been made into a major motion picture. Because of those factors, it awed audiences as no film before.
    I found movies showing it:

Of course, I watched latest – “The force awakens” part. I wasn’t disappointed and waiting for 8th!

  14. All of the Star Wars movies were very good in my opinion. Maybe my least favourite is the newest one because the story looked really simillar to prevoius episodes. I've also read some Star Wars books which were not connected to the movies and showed stories of different characters. Although "The force awakens" wasn't something that I expected, I still can't wait for the next movie.

  15. I'm personally a huge fan of Star Wars, I love them from childhood, and I'll probably love them to death. World created by George Lucas is a real masterpiece, which best shows the number of books written in the universe.

    Warning spoiler:
How could they kill Han Solo? :(

  16. I don't really like star wars and all of this type of movies. As Maciej Kaczynski said it is very difficult for me to write something about it.

  17. I think that Star Wars is one of the greatest movies, especially the first episode. These series had a really big impact on the sci-fi movies that were filmes later. But there is one thing I dislike in this series: the scenario, beacuse it has a lot of inaccuracies in the dialogue or in the timeline. I'm really happy that there will be more Star Wars movies. Also there was a really sad fact in the last episode, I mean that Han Solo died. But I heard that Harison Ford didn't like acting in Star Wars and he also looked very tired in the last episode.

  18. The Force, not "power"! Don't translate with Google, will ya?

For the record. Officially, it's not Expanded Universe anymore. Now it's called Legends (books, games, and basically all stories and characters beside core films which aren't canon). New EU is called New Canon.
Personally, I very much regret that the original EU has been pushed aside. There are dozens of brilliant stories and characters which could be developed by Disney in their new SW productions. Still, I must admit, there would be no surprises left for them to show the audience if they would have accepted old EU as canon. So, I regret but understand this move by Disney.
Speaking of Disney, they bought not only LucasArts, but whole Lucasfilm Ltd. :P

  19. I recently watched that latest part of Star Wars and I must say I didn't like it at all... In my opinion It's not the same kind of movie like it was when George Lucas wrote the story and managed whole production. New Star Wars movie doesn't have this "thing" it's hard to explain what but I think it was Lucas's magic and passion put in that saga.

  20. Damn, Star Wars was like a nice event in my early times. We had the old parts on the tapes and we were watching it all the time on weekends :) Fun times, tho.
I think that George Lucas created something very unique - some people love it, some don't - I am the one who likes it very much.
After watching the last movie I cried a little, because it was just bad - it had no 'magic' - you know the magic of old star wars.

  21. I love Star Wars, I watch them at least once a year. I enjoyed newest part, can't wait to see 8th part. I hope it will be as good as the 7th one. :)
