Week 12: Privacy on the Internet:

The subject may seem to be only associated with the IT industry. However, it concerns every person using the internet so I feel that everybody should be aware of the world we live in.

When we use the internet, we leave behind lots of traces that are later used by hackers or marketers. Facebook and Google do not have to transfer your personal data to advertisers, just tell them how to behave in the network. It's enough to be able to effectively influence us.

For several months, we know the scale of mass surveillance. With just a few clicks they gain access to your portable device, electronic mail, to your social networks and your web search.
Battles of privacy on the network during the campaign against ACTA mobilized young Internet users. But with what result?

Are we alone in the fight for our privacy? NO!
Here is one, but an important petition

The most interesting projects dealing with surveillance:

1947r. ECHELON

Total surveillance of classical radio listening goes in the direction of satellite transmission and exchange of digital data between continents. The system collects and analyzes the transmission of electromagnetic waves by electronic devices around the world - telecommunications equipment, IT, faxes, e-mails, file transfers, phone calls, computers, radars, satellites, reconnaissance, p telecommunications, etc. The system collects and processes billions of electronic communications daily.

2002r. TERRORIST FINANCE TRACKING PROGRAM
Remittances also perform the terrorists, it is not surprising the American multinational financial investigators got interested in such transactions. Since 2002, the United States Department of Finance, with the assistance of the Association for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication - SWIFT), have been checking banking operations.

2007r. PRISM

This is the code name for activities related to data collection, which officially are described as a US-984XN. The system operates under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978, which describes procedures for physical and electronic surveillance and collection of data exchanged between foreign powers and their agents and citizens of the United States, unless the latter are suspected of terrorism or espionage. PRISM supports the mysterious programs called BLARNEY and FAIRVIEW. The "Guardian" reported that they acquire the data from the fiber optic and other data transfer methods of ICT.

In 2012, started construction of UTAH DATA CENTER for the NSA. The giant fortified halls collect and examine even the Internet "garbage." Its cost is estimated at $ 2 billion.

2013r. BOUNDLESS INFORMAL
This is a system of analysis and visualization of massive data bases. Its existence was revealed on the occasion of information on PRISM. According to the "Guardian" alone in March 2013 in the U.S. there were recorded nearly 3 billion records containing various data.

Now let's think about your privacy.

Do you want to reveal all info about yourself?
Do you realize the risks of the activities that you are doing on the web?

The TED presentation below shows the problem of privacy, and the changes that are happening on the Internet. It also shows the weakness of governments that seek to control the innocent citizens.

Mikko Hyppönen is a computer security expert and columnist, The Chief Research Officer for F-Secure.

Questions:
1. Are you aware that you are observed?
2. Is privacy negotiable?
3. Do you think that you are able to defend yourself against surveillance?

  2. I think nobody have reasons to observe me.
Surveillance on internet can be used against criminal and terrorist.
Technically every device in web can be track down from every place in world by someone else.

  3. Well I don't like to be observed for sure, but when I am using the internet I am aware of that. I just try to use it rationally. It could be hard to complately give up the internet but when I don't have to use it I just don't. I don't store my private data on the Internet, unless I have to or it really makes my life easier. But I always do it mindfully.

Because i found cheaper tablet in internet ;D
About watching us.. i think they only collect information from our internet use. why they wanna watch us? and if they watching us.. how many people to watch they gonna have? it's just imposible.

  5. We are being watched for ages and this has not changed nor will it change in the future. People/governments always want to know as much as possible to control everything. I’ve heard about those programs from Mariusz Max Kolonko and his every so popular YouTube channel which he explains all of those projects as well as what happened with Edward Snowden.
Second part of privacy is us simply not taking good care of it. We publish pictures of ourselves and friends and don’t take good care of it. As we have entered the internet age we will no longer be private like we once use to be.

  6. I think that there is no such thing as privacy on the Internet. You can try to hide, block different kinds of scripts, encrypt data. However, someone may discover you, send another script or decrypt data. Just as "in real life". What can we do to hide? Probably not too much. Anyway, for what? As a result, at least I have a personalized Internet :P. Interesting offer, advertising, better search results. I prefer to look at it this way.

  7. I believe that Internet should be what it always was, it shouldn't be limited or monitored. It's a special place that works in different ways than the real world. Internet seems to deal justice by itself and is very reasonable.
Programs to punish people for using it the way they want to are only slowing down the progress and killing human rights.

  8. 1. Are you aware that you are observed?
Course I am. Because I am aware that we use internet and phones to communicate. And this kind of communication is very easy to listen.

    2. Is privacy negotiable?
It should be. I mean we like to feel private, but also we like to be safe. Now... if this information is used in a good way, for example to detect terrorism or illegal actions. In this case I do not mind them to listen. But if those information are used for personal purpose of the regime, or for commercial competition than that would be wrong.

    3. Do you think that you are able to defend yourself against surveillance?
I have nothing to hide so I do not mind them to watch.

    4. What do you think about the world in which a Big Brother is watching?
I think about the world in which people need to be watched. So other can feel a little bit safer.

  9. I've got used to that we are observed in internet and in real life. Nowadays, in city like Warsaw almost all our steps are being recorded by cameras mounted around streets. In the Internet that recording is being performed sometimes without people knowledge. If you want to stay hidden it's better to stop using Internet and even to spend rest of life in home. What about the world on which Big Brother is watching? In some way, we live in such world now, any ideas how to change it?
