Week 5 [26.10 - 1.11.2015] Vege

Have you ever wondered if you could become a vegetarian? Do you feel that life without meat does not make sense and vegetarians are strange people who eat only salad? Maybe  you are  convinced  that a vegetarian diet is bad or dangerous for your health? How many articles on human nutrition have you read during your life? J
I know how hard it is to explain to people the idea of vegetarianism so I will not convince you to such a lifestyle but I will try to show that herbivores life need not be boring.

"Oh my God, what are we then to eat"
Every man knows that you need to eat wisely to live a healthy life. But what should we do to eat wisely? It is good to have a general idea of the products that we eat every day to provide our body with all the necessary vitamins and nutrients in adequate doses. I know this may sound scary (especially when your favorite vegetable is meat
J) but trust me -it is not.

Believe me  food without meat may be great. In Poland there is more and more of vegetarian food. Doesn’t it  look yummy?

(These dishes taste meaty, I SWEAR)

Contrary to appearances, people who eat no meat does not need to eat only in "special" places. In almost every pub or restaurant there is always something without meat, and even if not, you can always ask the cook to prepare vegetarian dishes.

Replacements
Few people know that on the market there are many substitutes of ham, pate, sausages, schnitzels and steaks. What's more - they are very simple to prepare and available in almost every supermarket.

Each dish can be done in a vegetarian way and the best example of this is the book "Jadłonomia" written by a Polish blogger, which shows 100 great recipes for traditional and more adventurous dishes.

Another example is falafel, which is the equivalent of kebab.

  1. I've never wanted to become a vegetarian. Why? Because my favorite vegetable is meat :) There's probably a lots of people who can't imagine a meal without meat, and in my opinion, it's bad habit.
But I'am interested in eating good and healthy food (it could by vegetarian food). In your presentation I was hoped to find one, or two specific meals, with are the best (and easy to make). Can you add something like this?
Maybe someone of us, want to become a vegetarian and it will encourage him to do that?

    1. There are so many ways to prepare simple, tasty and vegetarian dish. It all depends on what type of food, and on what are your eating habits. In my opinion the fastest and easiest option vegetable creams are made from corn or green peas. It takes very little time and does not require multiple components or abilities. Another proposal is pasta with basil pesto or a simple vegetable casserole. If these proposals still are still too difficult, remember that the chips also are quick, simple and vegetarian :)

    2. Thanks for advice. I think I'll try some of that, but I'm not very good cook. If I'll burn something by mistake then, maybe the answer on my prayer is simply buying chips :)

  3. Briefly, but nicely put article. I'm glad that you mention that topic according to lifestyle, not ideology. If something can convince people to become a vegetarian or vegan, I think it would be rather healthier life, than showing them how bad was treated their chicken. But everyone has different reason. If I did such an article, I'm afraid I would focus on factory farming, that is why I'm glad you focus on the brighter side of vegetarianism/veganism.

On one hand such a lifestyle is more and more popular. Vege shops, vege restaurants. As you wrote, different replacement in almoust every supermarket. But on the other hand that endless and repetitive question "So what you eat then?!".

"[In restaurant] you can always ask the cook to prepare vegetarian dishes". Yes, that's true, but it depends on the cook. Sometimes even spaghetti bolognese without a meat is a way to much I can ask for. Cause in the recipe, he has got meat and he can't serve it without.

Despite of what I wrote in the first paragraph, if someone want to learn something more about the path which meat must walk to be shown in the supermarket I recommend a book "Zjadanie Zwierząt" wrote by Jonathan Safran Foer.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eating_Animals

Topics which are explore: factory farming, commercial fisheries, cultural meaning of eating and methods of agricultural production. Important is fact that the book is wrote without indoctrination "You have to be vege", "Veganism is the best in the world".

    1. I realize that vegetarianism is a controversial topic. I did not care to launch a debate about the treatment of animals, and therefore missed the entire ideology. I realize that I will not persuade anyone to this lifestyle (as I mentioned, I had no intention), but I wanted to show that such oddities as I walk on this planet and they are doing well Emotikon smile Thanks for recommending a book, maybe I'm in finally I motivate to buy it!

  4. I never thought to become a vegetarian , because I do not pay attention to what I eat. Food for me should be tasty ,healthy and should give me a lot of energy because i like spend my day in active way .

    1. If do not pay attention to what you eat, then I do not think you can say that it is healthy :)

  5. I don't see any benefits of vegetarian or vegan diets. For me the most important is taste. Some kind of meats also can be healthy for humans. For example chicken is recommended for people who care about slim figure. Many nutritionists advised to eat meat, because it has a lot of valuable carbohydrates and protein. Personally, I can't imagine a day without some meal.

    1. I know from experience that all the nutrients contained in meat can be found in fruits, vegetables and nuts. Everything depends on the willingness and beliefs to which I am not going to persuade anyone. On the effects of meat on the human body we could discuss for hours (but I guess that's not the point), but I think it is worth mentioning that vegetarians do not get atherosclerosis, which kills so many people around the world every year :)

  6. I think like most of people here I'm a big fan of meat. This does not mean that I do not eat vegetables or fruits. I have no problems with dinner without meat but avoid meat in meals would be for me a symptom of masochism. Living without meat would have less flavor, plus the body loses its nutritional value.

    1. OH, I would not say that my body had lost anything since I do not eat meat.

  7. I'm not an oponnent of vege and ofcourse I can eat meal without meat, but I love food, in general :) For me being vegetarian is reducing my options to eat many tasty meals, because they are with meal. I'm trying to eat healthy and have balanced diet and for me it's means that I eat vegetables, fruits and meat as well. I know that in vege diet are some replacement for meat, but simply, it doesn't taste as good as meat.

    1. Everything is a matter of taste. I must admit that I started to discover the flavors and learn new dishes when I gave up eating meat, and do not regret it, because I learned a lot tastier dishes.

  8. My favourite foods often happen to contain meat, but I also appreciate occasional vegetarian, or even vegan meals. I too, think that meatless diet can be tasty, but I could never fully commit myself to it. I consider my current eating habits quite healthy as they are, and I don't feel any ethical guilt being a carnivore.

However, I think it's not that simple to be a vegetarian: anywhere you go, if it isn't a vege-specific restaurant, you do have to watch out. Often a meal may be listed as "no meat", but it has other ingredients of animal origin. Futhermore, at the store, the substitutes are usually a lot more expensive. What's even more important, they aren't as healhy as they pose, as they are filled with chemicals, for example to make them taste like meat.

That's why I think the "proper" way of being a vegetarian is to make a little extra effort to eat healthy, natural food, because (in my opinion) that's what it's all about.

    1. The first weeks may be difficult, but everything is a matter of habit. For me, reading labels is not tiring, otherwise if you already know that a product is suitable, then the next time you're buying it out of habit. Same with all the other rules that vegetarians must follow. The devil is not so black as he is painted. ;)

  9. I never consider being a vegetarian. Why? For me, the meat is the basic product in my diet. The meat is very important due to nutritional value. Especially, it is the main source of balanced protein. It's not easy to replace meat in the diet. It's important to consume protein containing all the amino acids. In summary, vegetarians need to devote more time to prepare a complete meal.
Another important issue for me is the taste. I like to eat any kind of meat. I cannot imagine dinner without meat.

On the following page you can read about the pros and cons of being vegetarian. There you can read that: "Humans are meat-eaters and always have been. Humans are also vegetable eaters and always have been, but plant foods must be supplemented by an ample amount of animal protein to maintain optimal health".
To sum up, we should remember that plant food doesnt'n contain all the necessary nutrients.

    1. "To sum up, we should remember that plant food doesn't contain all the necessary nutrients."- I can not agree with you. All the nutrients that are found in meat can be found in vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains, beans and dairy products. You just have to know where to look and eat sensibly.

  11. I'm certainly not a vegetarian person nor fond of healthy eating, frankly, I even like eating meaty and (often) fatty food. :) Of course that doesn't mean I don't like vegetables or must always have some meat on my plate. I eat lots of salads, I like pasta and most definitely enjoy vegetable casseroles.
Nevertheless, I can't imagine my life without meat in the menu, therefore I don't think I could manage to become a vegetarian. It would be too big change and challenge for me, not to mention huge effort and commitment which are obligatory to fully keep "vege rules".

In terms of feeling ethical guilt by beign a carnivore, it reminded me of some mocking meme picture I recently encountered. Who's a Hannibal series fan? ;)

  12. I actually tried the stuff at Krowarzywa, a burger of some sort (that's what you get for hanging out with vegetarians, huh). To my surprise it was quite nice the second I tried it, but a few seconds later the taste was gone, and I felt like I was chewing cardboard. Also, it felt pretty dry compared to a nice, juicy burger.

Oh, and the people there were eating their plates. Weirdos.

Basically, the only tasty vege food I've tried was when they didn't try to imitate meat. For example - there was a place near my home in Taiwan that had the most awesome sandwiches - vegatables, fruits, eggs, a bit of nice sauce, toasted bread, had them for breakfast almost every other day. Perfection.
But every time I tried a dish with meat replaced by some kind of weird vege mixture it was a total failure.

  14. I'm starting my vege diet lifestyle. I mean like fully vegan mode - it's not the case of ideology, it's just the option I always wanted to try. I like meat but after watching some lectures and interviews with doctors it strengthen my opinion that vegan lifestyle is something good and worth going an extra mile.
I was a meat lover, like, food without meat is not a meal, really. Now, my mind has changed and I barely eat meat.
Most of you say that it's like cutting the menu in half and that what's left is only lettuce and air to eat. It's not true of course :) You have multiple choices of lightweight, TASTY and for the most important part nutritious meals.
For example go to Poznanska street and find Vegan Pizza or Momencik. Grab a slice of pizza, I won't believe that You would say that it doesn't taste good, you wouldn't see the difference between non-vege pizza and vege-pizza ;) and after try the vegan burrito - they also have pineapple sauce to it - it's great really ;)
Remember that I am a meat lover and I really do enjoy that vege-stuff ;) it's not that hard to commit yourself to it and I am not talking about ideology - most of vegans are crazy, fanatic people and at the same time they don't care about people.

Look at this topic from nature side. Carnivores in general are the ones that live shorter, it's nature. That's how it works, creatures that eat meat live shorter.
There is also a case of supplementing: yes, you need to supplement, we all need it. The most important is vitamin B12 - it's in meat, you need to start supplement it ASAP.
Did you know that for people with cancer it's recommended to switch to vegan diet ?

Yeah the Krowarzywa is like with all those fish burgers and that kind of stuff. First you're thinking "woah it's pretty nice", but then "what have I done" comes. I like vegetarian food, salads, non-meat dishes, but only when they don't try to immitate real meat as well. Normal meat's eater will see the difference, their taste either vanishes fast or is just bad.

    1. "however not eating meats, we

  18. Humans are omnivorous. I don't mind eating eating only vege meals, but not everyday. Normally I don't have time to cook and because of that I eat things that I can prepare quickly.

The best "vege" food I ate was in an Indian restaurant. There are also plenty
Vietnamese "restaurants" that offer tasty and cheap food without meat, however mostly, when I visit such a place I order meat meals.

I agree with others here, that the worst vegetarian food is that, which is trying to imitate meat.

  20. I was on a vegan diet for about two years. I benefited from it a lot,
for example I had better complexion and I had a lot of energy without coffee.
For me, it's not only a healthy diet, it's ideology.. I don't like that animals
are grown only for food. And they are kept in small boxes for their whole life.
Now I very rarely eat meet, I still very often go to vegan restaurants.
Last year, I wrote an article for our online English course and my presentation was

Moving a matter of ideological provoke discussion and rather discouraged others to such a life-style. But you're right, the ideology is very important and often fills every sphere of life. For example, vegetarians are often volunteers and do not buy any products of animal origin

  21. Vegetarianism is very constrictive topic.
Some people think that is stupid and the can’t imagine a meal without meat. In my opinion vegetarianism is healthier option for everyone.
For example: bad cholesterol. Our bodies produce good cholesterol. When we’re eating meat then we're receive bad cholesterol with it.
I think, vege meals is healthier and better than meat.

  23. Vegetarian diet is healthier than the traditional one which is based on large quantities of meat.
Vegetarian foods provide an appropriately high number of needed nutrients and minerals. It is also a large dose of vitamins, which is not found in meat. I eat meat and cannot imagine replacing it only with vegetables. In my opinion it is a good argument for a healthier nutrition, but we live once and should try everything even meat.

    1. I agree that you have to try everything. Since childhood I have eaten meat, but I've always been picky, so I tried vegetarianism. Besides, I do not have to worry about whether meat that I eat is not contaminated or poor quality.

  24. I have nothing against being neither vegetarian nor vegan, but personally I cannot imagine my everyday diet without meat. I like salads, pasta or pizza with no meat in it, some balance is needed. Recently there was an article in Focus magazine about rising children as vegetarian. Despite common opinion that lack of meat whey may cause harm for growing organism, it is not exactly true, the harm is caused by not providing its vegetarian equivalent. If vegetarian can keep it balanced there should be no health problems, so what’s wrong with that? Of course if he does not complaint around about others eating meat.

  25. I couldn't. I simply couldn't become a vegetarian, I can't imagine any longer period of time without at least one meal-based dish, In addition to that, I simply can't see any valid reason for forcing myself into not eating meat either. I don't have anything against such people, because it's not my bussiness what they eat, or if they eat at all, but I just don't follow the same ideology they have, and I would be strongly against if somebody forced me to do so.
