This year's best picture has many layers of meaning. It touches upon the issue of immigration. Men who try to maintain a bond with other families in the country. Their longing for a family home, and loved ones left in the country. This image says something about the photographer. He also travels a lot around the world and wants to keep in touch with his family.

Photos are sometimes shocking, sometimes impressive, often drastic. A photography must arise emotions. Photographers know this, and go to distant places in the world, conflict areas, where people meet war and injustice.

Press photo is not an easy job. A photographer does not work in a studio, there is no time for correction of light settings. He can’t ask the model to change the position and give him some time. In the world of reporters being in the right place at the right time is the key to success. Of these photographers we often say hyenas. Why? They will do everything to make the best possible photo. On the other hand, if they were not there the world would not see the problems of other people.

Personally, I love James Nachtwey’s photos. He is an American photojournalist and a war photographer.

He is talented and award-winning, he has won world press photo contest a few times. In 2013, he was hit by a grenade shrapnel in Baghdad. In February this year in Thailand he was shot in the leg during a street riot. He is 66 years old, and he has no plans to stop traveling the world and doing an extraordinary reportage.
His work is so good that a documentary film was made about him.

  2. I’m not a photographer so it would be hard to take part in this contest ;). However, the World Press Photo is the most important and prestigious photo competition, so nomination to it must be a great honor for every photographer. Images in the World Press Photo are breathtaking and very touching. Few times I have cried while watching them, because they show how brutal our world is.
I think James Nachtwey photographs are quintessence of the World Press Photo contest. They show cruel, but true side of the world. He captures humans and situations on which people are blind.

  4. Would you like to take part in this competition?
I did. with no real threat to the winners but still ;)
Which photos made an impression on you?
Every single one does. As long as it is not made by self-proclaimed Photo Studio Photography or any of those sorts that use professional camera with shitty lens. They made the world worse.
What do you think about James Nachtwey, his age and the desire to take pictures?
Everyone is entitled to take pictures. He loves it, makes some good material, everyone loves it. So why not?

  6. @armandstanczak His experience and craftsmanship its incontrovertible, but this is at the expense of his private life, which does not exist. In my opinion this is sad.

  7. @PrzemekM are you kidding me? Everybody can be a photographer? NO. sorry:P If you have a camera and you takes pictures it does not mean that you are a photographer. You are only the user of the camera…

I always wanted to take part in such event but I realised that these days if you want to win a Word Press Photo you're suppose to take pictres like those you selected. Ones that show misery, poverty or something like that as you mentioned and it's just sad for me.
I much more prefer that first photo that the rest…
There is always a question if a photographer should take photos or actually help. I know that it is his/her job but still…It is so tattered from humanity.
But of course I must admint that Wordpress also promotes some really ordinary and beautiful pictures..

  8. why no one felt the joke here :D
On the one hand, I laugh, but on the other there is no professional exam for them... so what, in your opinion, define true photographer?

  9. Okeyyy:P

I admit it is not easy. I used to think that professional photographer is the one who pays the bill with photography. But now I know I was so wrong. On the other hand there are many amateurs whose photographs can take breath away. Few days ago I was at Leica Gallery at Vivan's Maier photography exhibition. Nobody saw her work when she was alived, she was a simple nanny, who enjoyed taking pictures. But those pictures were simply great in my opininon.

So I think that there is no one simple answer to that question it is too complex...
