Personally I think that obesity in Polish schools isn't big problem yet. Majority of my schoolmates were or are regular weight. Of course that from time to time I see overweighted persons but definetely it's not so common problem. In my opinion it's about fastfoods, which are cheap, but unfortunately not healthy. As mentioned in the article it is also about parents who don't put enough care and attention to what their children eat. But is a fat parent able to persuade his child that healthy food is important ?
Obesity became a big problem, but please, don't say that it's a problem for a world, because it's important issue only in developed countries (and still I'm not sure thet in each of them!). When speaking about Europe and USA, yes, it is a problem. It affects both adults and children. How can we be suprised by what our children eat, when we don't eat healthier? I heard once a radio program about free apples in school for children, in which one lady said "Of course it's good that school gives our children apples, so we don't have this problem at home". PROBLEM? Yeah, sure it is a problem to convince your child to eat vegetables and fruits, when you're not eating them by yourself. What a hypocrisy! The other thing to blame, which has already been mentioned, is what is sold in schools. It should be prohibited to sell unhealthy food or to put the Coke machine there. School shop should be obliged to sell vegetables, fruits and hot meals that are not junk food. I remember when I was a kid and of course I loved to buy chips and chocolate bars, but I also had a problem when I was hungry and there was nothing to eat.
I believe that parents are responsible for the majority of obese children, yet sometimes a disease affects their obesity. Of course, I agree that you should promote healthy eating, but we cannot forget about exercises and sports! Since when we do not exercise we can gain weight even when we eat healthy. It seems to me that parents of obese children should focus on both healthy diet and the active life of their children, like going to the swimming pool, practicing judo, or ice-skating during the winter. There are so many activities that can be interesting to children.
Also, I do not understand the growing trend of eating fast foods, like hamburgers. The author of the article notes that the parents do not give food to their children in school, only the money, and maybe that is a problem since kids will always prefer to buy a chocolate or ice cream rather than something healthy. When me and my sister were still at school my mother always prepared a packed lunch for us, and now my 11-year-old brother always gets to school a sandwich, something sweet, some fruit and a drink. Also, my parents have never forced us to exercise or practice different sports because we studied at the sports school and different kinds of activities were just a great fun for us. I am very grateful for my parents that they have sent me to the sports school when I was young. My brother is not at the sport school but still he is a really active kid; he goes for the swimming classes every week as well as for the dancing classes twice a week. My parents are very busy people but still they find time for my brother to organize after-school activities for him.
Personally I think that in Poland unduly he doesn't have this problem. If we look at such countries as the USA, in Poland appearing of the obesity is on the very low level. Fact coincidences are happening, that people are eating at fast-foods, however I think that he is so only happening and exclusively because of the lack of time. We students of the last semesters, we are opening, which we must connect with the learning and writing the thesis what is being combined with working hard and the complete lack of time. The obesity can get down also because of the indisposition of the participation in classes of the physical education. I know such cases a lot, where pupils are shirking how can in order only not to exercise.
Don't you think it is some kind of a natural selection? If child have not enough educated parents, terathers and even society she/he will be sick and probably die before 60. For government it is great situation, because it have sick community, which will spend more money on gym/drugs/insurance.
It is enormous problem! Some kinds of food should not be named as eatable. Please look at it : http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=IdDfF4hXfj4 would you eat it? Would you named it bread?
Firstly Parents should give their children an example. If child would not eat junk food at home and don't consider for example chocolate as award she/he will not desire it at school. I agree with Łukasz Zmywaczyk, child which see parent who eat fast food will not want eat healthy food. katarzyna_girwicz also mentioned "that" hypocrisy and I agree with her opinion. So If you want to change something start from yourself.
