Phenomenon of the Monty Python’s Flying Circus

This is my last presentation and I hope you will enjoy reading and discussing it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Have you ever heard about Monty Python’s Flying Circus? If not, shame on you!
Monty Python's Flying Circus (later known as Monty Python) was a very well known British sketch comedy series and a group with surrealistic and abstract humour. Sometimes it is really hard for ordinary people to understand their jokes. The group was created by: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin.

'And now something completely different'

It is a comedy series which lasted 30 minutes and was built of many short sketches. I'll show you the most popular and characteristic one.

Surrealistic vision of present times: the human or mouse problem?

Monty Python tried to show daily problems in a very surrealistic way; for example, homosexuality or drugs can be a mouse whose problems human beings are trying to understand.

World War II: How does it really end?

Nazi's army wasn’t defeated because of Allies’ army. It's because of a joke, a deadly joke. Sometimes I'm glad I don't know German, because I'll never understand this joke. That's why we should be thankful to British writers.

SPAM!

Probably most of you never thought where the 'spam' comes from. It's from another Monty Python's sketch! Today’s spam is really annoying like the spam from this sketch and we can't do anything without it. In other words: internet = spam!

I walk really silly? So let's patent that!

The Ministry of Silly Walks is another crazy sketch from MP. Probably it's a reference to other Ministries, which do very stupid and not needed work. Of course for our taxes.
As You can see even clock can be inspired by Monty Python :)

Nobody expects Spanish Inquisition!

And at last the best known and crazy sketch! This time it is about infamous Spanish Inquisition, which was known as very brutal and sadistic arm of the Pope during middle ages. Here Inquisition is trying to be very brutal as well, but we can only laugh at how annoying they are!

Of course there are many more sketches, which you should watch. They can be found on the internet, but can be bought on DVD too.

For sure, if you watch this and like this, your mind will never be the same. :)

1Do you like Monty Python’s Flying Circus? Why/Why not? If yes, which sketch do you like most?
2.Tell us about your favorite comedy show in a few words and add some movies or pictures!

  1. Ugh, what a choice... ;)
I know Monty Python and I like them a lot for their unique sense of humor, originality and absurdity. I love "Life of Brian" :)

I don't have tv now but when I had I watched almost only Comedy Central. There are a lot of great comedy shows, like "Scrubs". It's unusual, not stupid, sometimes touching, sometimes surrealistic, with a appropriate dose of cynicism. Here are few exaplmes:

For those who know "Scrubs"- doctor Cox is my idol ;)

  2. Hahahaha monty python... Yup this is definitely my favourite comic group. Also i love polish ZCDCP. The whole magic about them is they really showed us the stupidity and paradox of our everyday's life. Do you remember the episode with the guy who wanted to jump over the channel?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qvk2wNWmB20

When i watched the Felix Baumgartner's jump it really reminded me that episode, because the guy wanted to jump over the channel with sponsor's bags and everything linked to Felix's jump was marked with Red Bull logo and it really looked funny :) i am really surprised they didn't make Felix drink RedBull in capsule before the jump. The procedures would sound stupid "take the can and check if it's closed, open the can and check if it's open, drink it carefully, ect..." :)

  5. I haven't had many chances to see Monty Python movies, mainly because I don' really have that much time, and so I'm not really in a position to say much. The life of a student-athlete and an employee isn't an easy one, it is sometimes really hard to find the time for anything else. Although, I have to say that Kabaret Moralnego Niepokoju is my favorite sketch comedy group and I consider it to be one of the best groups in Poland.

  6. Ah, Monty Python :) For me it's essence of British humour which I love.

Two the most favorites sketches are The Ministry of Silly Walks and The Spanish Inquisition which you embedded on your post.

My favourite sitcom is IT Crowd maybe because it's British and really geekish. There were some attempts to make American or German version of it but it was a disaster.

British movie which I like best is Death at a Funeral. Really light and full of black British humour comedy. I recommend you all to watch it.

  7. I love Monty Python! There are no words to describe greatness of their work. Last thing I can do is link my personal favourite (somehow everyone missed it here) Monty Python and the Holy Grail: 3 Questions

My second love is standup comedy like Louis CK shows or George Carlin (whats interesting, if you watch his shows now you can see how right he was at the time...)

  8. Monty Python for me is the essence of sophisticated intelligent humor, followed by a ranking at the top. Everything but coming to this level, and so modeled on Pythons, just always be champions;) Despite years of their skits do not age. British intelligence and humor without any barriers, eternally alive. Even the apparent simplicity there are some overtones. All of their skits or make people laugh, or are even interesting idea because they were amazing. The most funny actors John Cleese and Michael Palin.
My favorite movies are “Life of Brian” and “Holy grail”

I also enjoy Kabaret Hrabi. Joanna Kołaczkowska is a real comic genius! Here you go:

  10. Monty Python is a type of show that not everyone will be a fan. It has a witty English humour which you need to understand in order to find it funny. To be honest,it has taken me a while to "get it". Now I am a big fan of it. Through the show I was able to learn a lot about the English past and the English way of thinking.Even though, the show was produced in the 1970s it was created in the innovative way including animation and crafty language used.
    2. There are so many good episodes of Monty Python which are considered classic, not forgetting about the famous phrases. If I had to choose one,I would have to say"The mouse problem". Using example of men wanting to dress up as mice, the authors address the issue of homosexuality and the controversy surronding it. It is a very well-thought sketch. Moreover, I would say it was a brave move on the writer side, especially that Graham Chapman was gay himself. As he stated many times, he only wrote about issues that he knew.
    2. One of my favourite comedy shows is "That's 70s show". It is a show about the group of friends living in Wisconsin in the 1970s. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis play two of the main characters (this is before they were famous Hollywood Stars). The show tells a story about lives of high school students and their day to day problems using a simple humour. It is a show which allows me to relax and laugh at silly jokes. Some of my favourite scenes.

  11. Monty Python is fantastic, I saw plenty of skits, but I have not favourite one because it changes from time to time. 'Ministry of silly walks' is very funny :)
Now I like one scene from Life Of Brian about suicide squad.

My favorite Polish comedian is Joanna Kołaczkowska. I love the sketch with her called "Zadziwiająca praca umysłu", it is very funny.

I also watch some American sitcoms. My favorite is "The big bang theory". This sitcom is about four geniuses (geeks) employed in the California Institute of Technology and the blonde waitress dreaming to become an actress. It is really funny, in particular, one of the characters, Sheldon with Asperger's Syndrome.

  13. Oh boy - where to start? :) I truly LOVE Monty Python's Flying Circus. For their brilliant sense of humor, for their ridiculously funny sketches and ofcourse - for the members themselves.

Great thing about MP is their criticism on people, modern world, human flaws - all hidden under tons of humor.

However phenomenon of MP comes not only from scetches. Movies like "The Holy Grail" or "Life of Brian" are amazing piece of comedy as well. Scenes with "The Knights who say 'ni'" or the Holy Granade, or.. and so on.

When it comes to modern comedy - my current favourite show is "The Big Bang Theory". It's widely known sitcom about four nerds (and one "normal" girl :). It's innovative, funny, has great cast and ofcourse - it refers to all those nerdy popcultural things that I am also into :)

Other shows that I enjoy are: "Two And a Half" (when Charlie was there ), "According to Jim" and "Scrubs".

PS. My favourite MP's sketch? "The French Waiter" from the movie "Meaning of Life". You have to see it, describing is pointless :) Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzlCdWwYn2I

  14. I like Monty Python’s Flying Circus, because it is the funniest british comedy show i've ever seen. I don't know many sketch's but one of my favourite is "Silly Job Interview", url: http://youtu.be/zP0sqRMzkwo why? because it shows the essence of job interviews and it's funny for me.

I don't like comedy shows much, so I do not have a favourite, but I liked very much Jeff Dunham's sketch titled: "Achmed the Dead Terrorist " url: http://youtu.be/1uwOL4rB-go . Jeff Dunham is american ventriloquist and the skech is some type of interview with dead terrorist which is puppet. Few years ago it was the most viewed comedy video on YT

  16. I enjoy a good comedy, not only from our country. Monty Python in an interesting way to present the English and other nationalities making use of a lot of interesting art forms. Humor presented in movies and stories told by the team of Monty Python's Flying Circus can be compared to films Bareji, which also show the public and the problems in a distorting mirror.

One of the most interesting films are:

"Monty Python and the Holy Grail" in addition to all its irreverent envelope has a second bottom. This is a comment, which criticized the medieval ages. We'll see it even in the scene taking the dead out of the house, who wants us to realize the terrible conditions of life, a resident of the Middle Ages. Failure to observe the rules of hygiene caused an increase in the number of cases. Chronic diseases resulting from lack of cleaning "helped" unfortunates to make a quick trip to the afterlife. For this we have a scene of execution "alleged" witch. As you can see lose, not always right, and not having any basis for credibility judgments were macabre entertainment for the people. It does not matter why, and from whom, it is important that something is happening. Someone at the same time lose their lives? What to do to the "good" of all.
