Coca-Cola, what is all about?

This year Coca-Cola was in the first place of  the “Best global brand”* ahead of such brands like Apple, Google and Microsoft… But why? Why is it the most valuable brand in the world? Why does it have the  most recognizable logo?
It is only a beverage maker, nothing more  ?
Before I’ll try to answer these questions let  me present to you to  some interesting facts:
  •  At the beginning (1886) coke was make from coca leaves (and yes, till 1990 they contained cocaine, then they were decocainized) and kola nuts;
  •  Coca cola is not green without caramel, it is a gossip;****
  •  The Coca-Cola Company offers a range of more than 3500 products in over 200 countries, all of them are drinks. **
  •  There are machines  introduced in 2009 which allow you to choose from 100 types of coke ! It really looks amazing, but it is not available in Poland yet. ***
I think it is about marketing, because this drink doesn’t  offer  anything special besides . Drinking it you put on weight or lose your teeth . (One can contains 10 cubes of sugar)

There is even a gossip that red suit of the Santa Claus is taken from coca cola advertisement!
I won’t believe anyone who doesn’t know it: ;)

Marketing made this beverage iconic – the symbol of our century, but I think in a positive way. It tells people to by happy, to have fun.

Coca-Cola is famous of its “standing” advertisements especially, the ones in which people have to do something to get a coke, or something else with a coke logo J Take a look at this film:

These movies are very positive:

On the other hand…

So much sugar and other ingredients of Coca-Cola  are very harmful to  us, especially for children.  Please take a look at this video:

What do you think about Coca-Cola?  Do you like this brand? Do you like to drink coke? What do you think about New York plans to restrict big-sized soda sales, would it help or it is meaningless*?

  1. Hi,
I think the Coca-Cola company is one of the best planned estabilishment in the world. On the one hand the history of that comapny is so long that in a well managed bussines a huge profits can be reached and as we can see that is not only one institution which made it, e.g. Apple or McDonalds. But this is money. I cannot imagine how rich have to be a top person. However, advertisements do not tell about a harmfulness of that beverage. Every glass conatins nearly 30 g of sugar, it means quater of kilogram of sugar in two litres, it is a lot. Therefore, a cola drinking person will probably have a problem with obesity. Even if that person drinks only diet coke she/he changes sugar to aspartam and this is for a change carcinogenic. The preservative sodium bensoesan with C vitamin produce also carcinogenics benzene. Phosphor flushes caclium, iron and magnesium what favour bone decalcification. I know this is sad but this are studies about sodas. So if you like Coca-cola leave it for special occasions. Especially it applies to children (weak bones and addiction easiness). And it does not make happiness at all. The Mayor of New York City has right.

    Hi,
thank you for opinion! I didn't realize that "The preservative sodium bensoesan with C vitamin produce also carcinogenics benzene." So thank you for information. From the other side it is sad that I haven't heard about it in school... I leaned about structure of the forest (really!) but not about so much usefull information. Ofcourse teachers says that sodas are bad, but nothing more. What do you think, whether the school should teach children about such things?

  3. In my opinion coca cola is a dangerous beverage. People drink a lot of it, and even though they are aware that it's very unhealthy, well-funded and run on a large scale marketing convince them that it's cool, or at least "if cola is everywhere, how can it be so dangerous?".
I drink coca cola from time to time, I admit it is tasty, but it's not so good that it's worth it to destroy your health. I know people who drink at least 2L of cola daily. One of them have totaly damaged theeth because of it. Totaly. I think they are addicted.
What the mayor of the NY wants to do is right. Such actions show that cola is really unhealthy, because it is not 100% tolerated.
Another good (necessary!) thing is the removal of vending machines with sodas from schools and removal sodas from school shops. If we allow children to buy coca cola without restriction, we shouldn't be surprised that when they grow up they don't even wonder about what they drink.

  4. There are two aspects which one needs to consider when talking about Coca-cola. One is Coca-Cola as a brand and the second one is Coca-Cola as a drink.Looking at Coca-Cola as a brand I must say that the company deserves its first place. Everything is done right. From the "make me happy" commercials through bottle sizes and even pricing everything is well thought and considered. The simple logo is recognized all over the world and even if written in other languages,e.g. Arabic,it is still recognizable. It is a powerful company that knows how to drive the market and adjust to its changing needs.
Coca-Cola was my forbidden fruit when I was a kid. I remember drinking it only on special occasions. It was like this magic bubbly drink that made everything better. Now everywhere I look, there is Coke-small,big,sugar,no sugar, caffeine free, etc, whatever I wish. But rarely I reach for the can of coke and the reason is simple. I know the consequences and I want to avoid it. Contrary to the majority of the American population where more than a half is overweight and has health problems. But,I wouldn't be so fast and blame the soda makers for the problems. I believe it is up to each individual to take care of his/her health and make the right food choices. Therefore,I do not believe that banning big drink sizes in New York would solve the problem. You might be able to order a small glass of your favourite fizzy drink, but you are still getting free refills, hence, in the end consuming the same amount of sugar. As previously said,it is up to everyone to differentiate the right from wrong and treat the own body with the respect.

  5. Coca cola as a drink is a drug, like a fast food. The whole world speaks aloud with one voice "coca cola is unhealthy" also i have to mention brands like McDonald's and KFC. These brands play in the same marketing league. This is a kind of reversed marketing which i had the pleasure to learn in classes at PJWSTK. Let me give you all an example, a little story about Nike. Let's say there are two types of marketing and two guys which has the same mission to sell the same line of shoes in africa. After a month of reaserches they came back to Nike to show their reports. The first guy said - "there is no chance to sell that line because they don't even wear shoes" and the second guy was very entusiastic and said that "this is a real opportunity, they don't wear the shoes, so we have to make a need in them and everyone will wear nike shoes!" of course the second guy was right and this is the type of marketing which Coca Cola use. We don't need Coca Cola as a drink to live and even at the time the whole world don't want it because it is so unhealthy. But when we look at these commercial ads, their logo, their marketing which we want to be a part of, we start to think - hey coca cola is cool, why not to drink the cold can of cola when it is so refreshing? It's a masterpiece of marketing, for real! i would even say that we feel the need of cola like we need water and we accept it that way. It's even a part of human being, to have a right and access to drink Coca Cola. At the same time, didn't we forget about Pepsi? Didn't we forget about Burger King? Pepsi is i guess almost if not even the same drink as coca cola , but nobody talks negatively about pepsi, it's because they don't make the same type of marketing as coca cola. They use the lever marketing - of course the lever is coca cola, and they really get a huge profit of it because if we all "don't like coca cola because it's unhealthy" we still like the taste of it, and the alternative is pepsi. I personally prefer pepsi more, i don't know if it's the taste of it, or maybe the colours of the bottle label, but this is how marketing works. States coca cola big size is really big, when i first time saw these huge cups and bottles of cola i really started to think, who the hell would even drink the whole thing? But everything in US is big sized, so i don't think they can make americans buy smaller bottles.

I agree with you that banning big sized dring won't solve the problem.
First the people thinking should be changed. I hope one day human health will be worth more.
Today, as I see, for companies, government etc it is better if people are sick and dies earlier.

I think that you mentioned a very good idea, that we have to remove vending machine with sodas and sweet snacks from school.
It would be much better if they would contain sandwitches or fresh juice.

  8. Coca-Cola is one of the most famous brands in history. Has gained this status with a great marketing, design, the relevant ads and slogans. I agree with s7495 that there are two aspects which one needs to consider when talking about Coca-Cola. One is Coca-Cola as a brand and the second one is Coca-Cola as a drink. I like this brand, for a great logo and great ads, posters, mostly the old, from the beginning of the coca cola on the market. When it comes to Coca-Cola as a drink, personally I like the taste, but I know that is very unhealthy, so I drink very rarely, usually only for pizza, then taste the best. Unfortunately, some one drink coca-cola very often and they do not care this is not healthy. I believe with a good idea is to replace the cola vending machines in schools for vending machines with health food.

  9. Coca-Cola is a very good company, espacially because of its wide range of products that customers can choose from.

Because I'm an athlete, I often buy their products.

Depends which one, personally, I prefer Coca-Cola Light due to its lower sugar content.

It's really hard to say, but I think it depends on how it's going to be done.

  10. I find coca-cola as a perfect example of commercialism (in positive sense), if you look at any aspect of that product, you will find extraordinary ideas. Color, shape or the way its advertised - they doesn't sell you just drink. They sell you happiness which you can have everywhere. At any time. Everyone wants to be happy so they will drink it and feel good.

And yet everyone knows it's unhealthy! Even I do! But I'm going to keep drinking it anyway, some coke at the time won't kill me. I'm just happy we dont have that whole US corn syrup thing instead of regular sugar, that thing destroys the taste of the drink.

Also, the product itself is so neutral its widely accepted around the world, in any culture. You can say what you want, but bottle of coke is acceptable in almost every situation. With any meal. Nice dinner in restaurant? Fastfood? Christmas eve? Have a glass of coke!

City of New York is banning sales of big-sized sodas because they're not single meals. They even considered other oversized meals to be banned because they were too big for one time, like large tubs of popcorn etc. It's because most people can't tell the difference between single portion of meal and group sized meals, those large sodas are actually way too large and selling them as a one serving is wrong, anyone who has seen them will tell you that. They're not banning selling of 2 liter bottles in grocery stores, they're banning them in restaurants where you're supposed to eat whole meal at once. I hope their school meals are going to get fixed next, kids are growing up with diabetes these days.

  11. Hello there,

I have to say I'm not a big fan of coke or other sugary beverages. Sure, the Coca Cola company has a perfect marketing strategy - I'm suprised I'm not another "victim" of it. But, fortunately, I listen to my body reactions to coke and these are just bad: sugar rush which makes me tired, gases (I hate carbonated drinks), melting teeth... :) And I know it causes weight gaining and, consumed frequently, serious health problems. So, Coca-Cola, thank you, but no.

P.S. Shape of the 0,2 litre bottle - sexy :)

  12. I think that coca-cola drink is only painted water with sugar, but I don't say that I don't like it. I remember some research about coca-cola, where in one state of america they stop advertising cola at all. effects were very suprising because the selling of coca-cola fell down very much. Why? because even the most popular brand will disappear when won't be advertised
