Week 6: [10.11 - 16.11.14] Art of modern tattoos

When you hear the word tattoo, do you automatically imagine typical American heart, anchor or pin-up lady, featuring bold black outlines and a limited color palette? If yes, take a look at those modern examples of mixing advanced techniques and best quality inks to create some interesting effects!

White tattoos
White tattoos are made using a slightly thickened white paint, completely different from the traditional tattoo ink. Depending on skin tone, white tattoos often look like a scarification.
However, specialists advice to be very careful when choosing a white tattoo - depending on your skin reaction and the level of professionalism of the tattoo artist, the tattoo can turn yellow or purple over time. Just like when you’re making traditional tattoo, you should choose a professional studio to make sure they’ll do it professionally and with great care.

UV tattoos
UV tattoos require a special ink that is visible under an ultraviolet light. Depending on the ink, they can be nearly invisible in non-UV environments. Therefore they are a popular consideration for people seeking a subtler tattoo (for example, those who fear that a tattoo will cause problems in their future career).
uv12
However, just like white ink tattoos, UV tattoos can be risky - they may or may not cause allergic reactions, and may appear invisible or visible after they’ve healed, depending on the type of UV ink used and how the skin reacts once they’ve been laid down.

Watercolor tattoos
Not all modern tattoos use hi-tech ink; watercolor tattoos are more about the technique, which is supposed to imitate - what else? - watercolor paintings.
These effects, although they don’t require as high-tech ink as white or UV tattoos, would be impossible to achieve 20 years ago - the bright colors of ink as well as advanced tattoo machines weren’t invented yet.

Geometric tattoos
Geometric tattoos are another example of using normal ink to create modern, original tattoos, sometimes resembling graphic design.
These tattoo methods are a great example that technology affects all fields, and modern trends are visible not only in professional design, but also in a less seriously taken branch, such as tattoo making.

Questions: Do you like tattoos? Perhaps you have one or plan to have it done? How do you like the ideas mentioned in the article? Have you heard about other interesting modern tattoo methods?

  1. I am soooooo obsessed with tattoos :)
I have never heard about UV tattoos but now, thanks to You, I will consider making one like that.

I love black ink tattoos, the color ones are definitely not in my type.
I have few favorite geometrical like:

About white ink, I think that they look more like scars, and at least in Poland there is not many specialists doing that.

I also heard about some terrible ideas like eyeball tattoo, but they are awful.

  2. I do like tattoos and I was even considering to have one, but I still haven't decided. I also think that today's tattooing is much more interesting and more variable that it was in the 90's for an instance. And as Karolina Wieczorek mantiond the geometrical tattoos, they are becomeing very popular also with the minimalistic tattoos which probably most of you already seen on Bored Panda :)

  4. I have my own tattoo and I'm planning to have more of them in the future. Our society is constantly getting used to people with tattoos and nowadays owners of skin art don't have to cover it with clothes. Yet still getting a job while having tattoos is more difficult.

Although modern tattoos looks great the old school ones are still popular and this is fine for me. I like how the past blends with the present time on people skin. :)

  5. Karolina, I'm glad I gave you an idea! :) I've also heard about eyeball tattoos, but even if I liked the idea (which doesn't seem aesthetically pleasing at all), I wouldn't risk my health like that - eyes are such an important organ and I can't imagine what would I do if anything went wrong...

Weronika, the tattoos you posted are really cool, especially for people who don't want anything big and very visible.

Jan, will you share a photo or describe your tattoo, or is it a secret? :) I think that getting a job with a tattoo is easier in some fields - for example, SNM students would probably have less problems - graphic designers don't have to look businessman-like :)

  6. I don't have any tattoos but I would like to have one small in the future.
I was thinking about white tattoo because I love them. They looks really awesome but they are quite hard to make it as you said and not a lot of artists make them in Poland.
I saw how a tattoo artist make Rihanna tattoo on hand and for me this looked so painful and horible.
I never heard about such strange technic and defninitly I wouldn't like to do something so big on my hand. Watercolor tattoos look the most interesting to me.

  7. Last week I've wrote a really long comment about tattoos on the second blog but here you've shown really interesting ideas for tattoos. I really like tattoos but only if the idea is pretty and if the engraving is well done. They can be a real piece of art. However I've never understood why people would let someone inexperienced make their tattoo for a few bucks instead of gathering enough money and going to a professional. The same can be said about people who get tattoos without checking the spelling first. I saw many people in Poland (in buses etc.) that had really simple mistakes in their tattoos in English, Polish or Latin and on the Internet there are really a lot of terrible tattoo mistakes. I think that the idea of a tattoo should be well though and even if it's made on the spur of the moment you should know the person who is making the tattoo or be sure of their skills and that they'll be able to satisfy your needs . You mentioned allergic reactions a couple of times. I thought that it's common and I guess it's a smart thing to do that if someone is getting their first tattoo they should get a small ink spot and wait to see if they aren't allergic. First of all if someone suspects allergies (because they have got some other skin conditions) they should really check it , because the results can be really bad if they're in fact allergic.

I don't have any tattoos and I think it's mostly because I've never found/thought of one that would be perfect for me. It's possible that in the future I'll get one and nowadays more and more often I think I would like to get one. I've always liked something simple like these geometric tattoos that you've shown, I think I would like to get something in this manner - minimalistic. The link from Weronika is really great, I like some of the ideas. But I like all the ideas that are in this article, I've never heard about white and UV tattoos but they seem pretty cool. I don't know about any more unusual stuff, I guess that scarification is getting more popular and I've heard about eyeball tattoos that Patrycja mentioned but I think that eyes are too important to risk them just for "fun". I actually heard that not many people are taking on a task of making eyeball tattoos because it's so dangerous.

  8. Paulina, I also can't imagine trusting an unexperienced tattoo maker... After all, it's about almost permanent change to your body. I can think of several facebook fanpages about horrible tattoos, and on TLC there is a show called 'America's Worst Tattoos', where they show examples of tattoos made by totally unexperienced 'artists', containing various mistakes or simply being some terribly drawn, random doodle...

If I make sure I want to have a tattoo, I'll choose an experienced tattoo artist - I already have some favourites, like Kris Cieźlik and Gulestus Tattoo :)

  9. I totally fell in love in all kinds of modern tattoos seen above. It's a little bit risky to have a usual one, cause, as it was mentioned, it can be a source of problems in future career or in the social ingestion of ourselves (let's be honest, Polish mentality is still far back than the Western countries'). But the ones made with white ink?! I find it very attractive, especially on female bodies. It's subtle and extraordinary at the same time. The second way of doing tattoos, the one with the use of UV light, is a great idea for those, who aren't really sure about doing such body prettifications as glaring tattoos. It's only seen on special conditions, which makes it kind of secure. It's incredible that even this tattoo branch of art is still developing, despite it seemed that everything in this field has already been invented.

  10. I really like tattoos. I wonder to have one but I still don`t decide. I planing to have one in the further. For me people with tattoos is more interesting.

I never heard about this different technique of tattoos, for me that was wary interesting. In your article I really like watercolour tattoos, that looks incredible. I never think that is possible to have something like this on body.

  11. Agata and Tomasz, I'm glad you like them! I agree with Tomasz's opinion - it always amazes me how everything constantly changes, even when you think it's not possible to invent anything new in some field.

  12. I have never seen anything like that!
I really like how it looks like (but even though i would't decide to do something by my own).

I don't personally like this white one, because, as you have written, it looks a little bit like a scar :( And I guess it is not visible from some distance, and it could simply looks bad.
About uv tattoo - nice idea :D But is it worth doing it, when it's only visible in uv light? There are not so many occasions to be in a place with uv light, maybe in some clubs... But still, is it worth to have something you almost never see?
I love how watercolor tattoos look like! Really beautiful! But yeah, after some time they will get dull :P
I have seen an articles with similar to your last category, that assembling graphic designs and I have to admit they are really good looking :) I like the most small ones, very subtle and gentle :)

  13. Natalia, I guess white tattoos are an alternative for people who like scarifications (to be honest, process of making scarifications really frightens me and I'd reaaaly prefer having a white tattoo).

And I think that both white and UV tattoos are purposefully not very visible - some people don't want a big tattoo to boast about, but a small, invisible one, reminding them of some important life change or something like that.

  14. As long as I can remember, I always wanted to have a tattoo. I don't have it, cause I still can't decide. I always change my mind, when I discover lots of cool projects. Waterbrush tattoos are the most impressive thing I've seen recently, especially if they are created by talented person.
Here you can check artworks of Wang, my favorite tattoo artist from popular studio in Hong Kong. These projects are incredible, it will be nice to 'wear' one of these compositions.
The modern stuff like UV tattoos are really crazy, I'm curious, how it looks like in reality :) At first sight, I thought white tattoos are scarifications. I'm not fan of them.

  15. Aneta, the tattoos you posted are really amazing! I love how visual arts like painting or drawing influences them. A pity that the artist lives so far away!

  16. Patrycja, you're right :) It is really depending on the person and what he/she likes :)

Aneta, really cool example! Never seen something like this before!

  17. I like tatoos and mentioned tattoos are really nice especially uv tattoos. I have think once about making one when I was younger but with time I have change my mind because of cost of it and because once made tattoo stays with you for you whole life. By the time pass tattoo also can be damaged by changes in your skin and you will have to spend another pack of money to renew it. I have never been interested in different kinds of methods of making tattoos.

  18. Yes, I like them! I never considered having one myself, but I do appreciate good designs. Not long ago I fell in love with the creations of Meatshop Tattoo shop. I just adore their work, all these details are fantastic, go check them out if you haven't seen yet. I've been following their gallery at deviantART for some time and I'm always impressed whenever they add new photos of tattoos.

I've never heard of UV tattoos, so thanks for mentioning them in your presentation. That skeleton hand looks really cool. Actually all of the examples you gave, are beautiful, each in their own way. The watercolor ones are my favourite.

  19. I really like tattoos. Presented tattoos look very good, especially geometric and UV. Personally I prefer the old school style tattoos like Jan. Currently I don't have plans to do tattoo, maybe in the future.

  20. I am not a huge fan of tattoos. When I think about decorating the body in such manner I always get the association with sailors or prison inmates nad it will probably stay that way :) Nevertheless, I have to admit, that looking at the photos presented, there are some true tattoo artists out there. I wonder wow do you create a colorful tattoo like the one on the first picture in " Watercolor tattoos" section – it looks amazing. Does any of You have experience in creating one ?

  21. Do you like tattoos?
Freakin hate them. More than useless. I especially hate the older ones. Folks if You ever get one, remember that it will age with You so it will change in time.
Perhaps you have one or plan to have it done?
No, I have a brain. Don't need to make things nicer/prettier or w/e
How do you like the ideas mentioned in the article?
