Week 7: [17.11 - 23.11.14] GAME OF THRONES

It is a television series that fascinates millions of spectators all over the world. Let me introduce you to the show’s world. The story is set on a land, where the summer can last decades and the winter prevails longer than a person’s life. From the full of intrigues South, across the wild eastern continents, to the frigid North and the ancient Wall, which protects the kingdom from the powers of evil, members of several noble houses are rolling in a fierce struggle for the control of the Iron Throne. It is a story about hypocrisy and betrayal, nobility and honor, conquest and triumph. The first season shows a land of the seven kingdoms, which resembles Medieval Europe. Right in the first season the king dies and two powerful families begin a fight for the Iron Throne. “Game of Thrones”- here you either win or die.

In the second season of the epic HBO series cruel young Joffrey takes the throne at the King’s Landing with his mother Cersei on the side and the uncle Tyrion, who becomes the King’s Successor. The Lannisters, who hold the power, are attacked on several fronts, including the attack by two of the Baratheons lusting for the crown and Robb Stark, who was declared King of the North. In cold backwoods of the Wall, Jon Snow and the Night Watch are fighting against the Wildlings’ leader, who increases his power, and Daenerys Targaryen is striving to strengthen his authority in the East thanks to three newborn dragons.

In the third season of the “Game of Thrones” members of the Lannister family hang onto the power, which has been weakened by Stannis Baratheon’s attack. The unrest in the North can make it difficult to maintain a balance of power. Robb Stark, King of the North, has trouble keeping advantage that he has gained by the victory over the Lannisters, and on the far north Mance Rayder and the commanded by him army of the Wildlings keep moving south. On the other side of the Narrow Sea, Daenerys Targaryen finds his three dragons and then tries to form an army to drain out of Essos and regain the Iron Throne. In the third season the families living in Westeros will fiercely fight battles, where the loyalty will be tested and the cruel fate will start to come true.

After the Red Wedding, where many members of the Stark family were killed, the Lannisters still keep the Iron Throne and are not going to relinquish power. The adamant Stannis Baratheon is rebuilding his army in the Dragonstone, while an immediate threat emerges in the south.

Do you watch any series or maybe Game of Thrones is your favorite one? How do you think the Westeros land’s story will unfold?

  1. When I started watching Game of Thrones, at the beginning it was a little boring but after 3 or 4 episodes the action kick in. My favorite are season 2 and 3. I can't wait until the next season starts. My favorite character is Danerys and I love the part when the whole story about her starts in season 1.
    How will this story unfold ? I think that in this series you can't expect to live your favorit character will live for too long :D Everybody will die sooner or later :D

  2. Unfortunately I have not seen any episode of Game of Thrones, but I heard a lot of positive opinions from my friends. As much as I know, in general this television series met with a positive response from critics. What surprised me and is not often, the premiere episodes are released in Poland just one day after the premiere in USA.

    It is an adaptation of “A Song of Ice and Fire” written by George R. R. Martin series of fantasy novels. As usual there was a lot of exemptions from the book. Opinions on forums suggest that the king Stannis Baratheon does not look like a hard ruler known for his novels cards. Mance Rayder conversations with Jon Snow is the strong point of the book. In episode it was short and different then original.

    This are only few examples of exceptions, but there are many more. In my opinion the popularity is caused by original plot, that differentiate from variety of other popular shows that are popular nowadays.

  3. I'm a huge fan of Game of Thrones, both books and TV series. (House Lannister rules! :))

    I'm really happy that the books have been adapted for the screen and gained such popularity. 'A Song of Ice and Fire' is really amazing and I know many people would never read it if it wasn't for the series (even though the latter wasn't as great as the former, in my opinion).

    I must say I'm a bit surprised by Katarzyna's opinion, though. For me, the first two seasons of TV series were the best - in the last season there was more talking than actual action.

    Talking about George Martin - I must also mention that I really admire clever fanarts and comics made about him; you can see some of them here, here or here.

  4. I have never seen any of series of Game of Throne, but I have heard that's really interesting. I am not a movie-person, I definitely prefer to read books, and in this case I have a Game of Thrones book on my "to-read" list :)

    I only wonder if I am so much into fantasy :)

    After what I have heard about this series, and after reading your post I see that's quite complicated, lots of characters are there. I wonder if its easy to catch up with this while reading a book. It might be way easier to follow the plot and the characters when you see it, you have additional sense included into the process of following the whole story. :) What do you think? Have you read a book or only saw a series?

  5. It is going to be a short comment: is quite difficult for me to relate to the topic, because I have never seen any episode and haven't red the paper original either.
    I have a few colleagues that are fascinated by the show, though. I also see a lot of GoT-related posts on 9gag, which means that it must really be catching young people's attention :)
    I understand the author of this post, I have my favorite TV series too: The Sopranos. The last season aired about 7 years ago, but I still love to watch it. For anyone of you interested, here is the link to the last season's trailer.
    I really recommend this show, Tony Soprano is a one-of-a-kind character:

  6. Several TV series have been released that made an actual impact on society. The first one I remember clearly was "The X-Files", which kept a whole generation awake at night. Even though I was not that much into "Lost" but it's hard to forget the long conversations we had about the plot twists the authors had prepared for us. Recently we've experienced plenty of high-budget, ambitious, and beautifully acted productions such as "Breaking Bad" or "House of Cards". I firmly believe that "Game of Thrones" is to be counted amongst them.

    First of all, it's based on a wonderful book series that describes a world so vivid and rich that it almost resembles a historical novel. George R.R. Martin is also involved in making of the series, which makes both the dialogues and the story shine.

    The world of "Game of Thrones" is not a typical fantasy land with fairies and elves. It's much grittier and more realistic. It's a world that has forgotten about magic and abandoned old beliefs and shifted its focus to courtly intrigue and materialism.

    I personally enjoy the fact that the story is so varied, that it shows us the world from different perspectives and makes us consider multiple points of view. There are no knights in shining armor - we could say that this colorful world is in fact filled with different shades of grey (no pun intended).

    I see that some of you have not seen the show yet. Give it a try! Some of my friends disliked fantasy films and stories but their attitude changed once they started watching a couple of episodes. I'm sure you'll be able to appreciate the effort that the authors put into it.

  8. I started to watch the game of thrones when was already finished 1 season. I watched the whole in a few days. Then I had to wait for the episodes of season 2. I do not have favorite seasons or episodes. I watched Game of Thrones once time and all for me creates one film.

    My favorite character is Ari. Always when I watching next episode I wait until she appears.

    How did the story develop? We ave to wait for next season. The series is becoming more differences with respect to book. So we can only speculate the future characters.

  9. In my opinion Game of Throne series is one of the best series ever made. History is presented in serial is full of war, fights, alliances, betrayals, deaths, love, romance, family, magic, magic creatures. Everyone can find something for themselves. In this series you can't attach to much to one character because If you do so you can be almost sure that this character will be dead after couple episodes. Only few characters from beginning of the series remain alive and one of my favorite Tyrion is still alive xD.

    From other TV series I also like Supernatural and Arrow.

    And about question How story will unfold? We can just wait for end of all season and check or read a books and check now (but Im not sure that full story of Westeros had been released in books).

  11. I've watched the first season of Game of Thrones series and got to the half of the second one, but sadly, after that I got bored. Don't get me wrong, I think it's a fantastic show with a great story, costumes and actors are great, it even has dragons which I'm fond of. I've read all the A Song of Ice and Fire novels before the whole hype started. I absolutely loved them, but now I can't seem to convince myself to watch more of the tv show when I know what's going to happen.

    I'a a huge fan of The Vikings series and I can't wait for the next season in 2015. If you haven't seen the series yet, check it out in the meantime, I totally recommend it.
    Here's the gloomy yet beautiful opening from the show.

    I also follow the American Horror Story series. It has 4 seasons so far (the 4th in progress). Each of the seasons tells us a different story centered around a certain trope from horror genre, so you don't need to start from the beginning. I recommend watching it as well, especially if you like being scared a little. :)

    It is nice to hear that you also watch this series, but I also hope that you are mistaken because my favorite hero, Jon Snow, gotta survive.

    @Patrycja Marciniak
    Thanks for the links, it’s really funny comic strips :)

    @Natalia Smoczynska
    Unfortunately I haven’t read the books yet, but soon I am going to because I heard a lot of positive opinions, though I would prefer to wait till the vacations when I will have more time. As I think that if I start reading a book I will not be able to stop until I finish it completely. So this would negatively impact on my studies.

    @s9397
    Unfortunately, I haven’t seen any episode of The Sopranos. Anyways, thanks for the recommendation, maybe I will have a bit more of a free time to watch a few episodes or even a full season.

  14. Do you watch any series or maybe Game of Thrones is your favorite one?
    I do watch/have watched a lot of series. Friens, Dr House, Sherlock, Arrow, Top Gear (waaaait....) Futurama, GoT etc. But when asking about GoT - I didn't really enjoy it as much as I would think I would. Boring, many stories happening at the same time - to much haos for one episode. But they have dragons, so that's nice.
    How do you think the Westeros land’s story will unfold?
    They will all die. Paifully. Like every other character in this "fun" series.

  15. Well, I'm a little retarded about TV series. I heard about Game of Thrones many times from my friends, but I've never seen any episode. I will someday make up for this (this time I'm addicted to Breaking Bad and definitely it's my number one).
    And, for sure, I'm going to read GoT books. I heard very good opinion about them.

  16. Although I’ve heard so many positive opinions about the ‘Game of Thrones’ series, I haven’t seen any episode. Due to this fact, it’s hard for me to refer to this topic. Generally, I’m not a huge fan of any TV series, I’d rather read books, or at least watch movies. In fact, after watching a few other series, I have the impression that the directors of them have no idea what they’re doing. The plots are usually too complicated and the viewers aren’t able to follow it. At least it was like this in my case. I just can’t resist the constantly changing situation, like on the end of the all seasons everyone has already been dating everyone, the dead characters has risen back from the dead, and so on. It’s just not for me.

  17. I have heard a lot of positive opinion about the Game of Thrones series but I haven't seen any episode. I'm a fun of TV series so the Game of Thrones is one of series to watch. Referring to the other series my favourite one is Breaking Bad like Aneta.

  18. I watched a few episodes of the first season of Game of Thrones. I think that this is an interesting series, but not so interesting as to continue watching next episodes. Maybe it's just not my climate. Personally I prefer The Big Bang Theory or How I Met Your Mother kind of series. They are set in our time, I can laugh at them well and I definitely recommend them! :)
