Week 13: Think Before, Speak After

Think Before, Speak After

I imagine there are many methods and forms on how to learn to think before saying something. Do you know any? Personally I don’t. However for some time I have been focussing my attention on what I say.
Before I speak I think about whether it makes sense or not and if I agree with it. Just when I'm sure, I say.

I think one of the most interesting and beautiful human qualities is the ability to communicate through speech. Incredible is that we can talk and communicate our feelings in real time. However, this feature of the majority of the world is captured in a very basic way. There are very few people who are wondering about what should change in this as they say.

Thinking before speaking sometimes is a challenge, especially if you are trying to prove to the world how smart you are… First you should ask yourself before open your mouth „if I’m going to say anything interesting ?” Trying to prove something is  just one of the bad habits that always gets us to speak without thinking.

Words are important and used in a correct, nonviolent way can help immensely.
In our world information is given to us very quickly. All messages and e-mail are sent with a click of a button. Many of things are shared instantaneously to millions of people around the world. Remember, just because we can say something doesn’t mean we should.

Sometimes people really don’t realize the influence of their words on another person. Of course we’re all only human and we can make mistakes, but we have to remember that sometimes words hurt.

1.    What do you think about human communication?
2.    Do you know any methods how to learn to think before saying something?
3. Do you think before about how important is communication?

  1. The subject of this presentation in pretty weird. It is obvious that before speaking we should think about it. Sometimes it happens consciously sometimes not. The great example are speeches or answers for questions during interviews. When we speak publicly it is even more important to prepare our idea in schema.

Despite of that there is problem of morality, being honest or just saying things that will not hurt someone. If You don't think about what are you saying it is pretty sad. You may say something not proper or even insulting someones feelings.

  2. I would say that nowdays our communication has changed a lot. We learn to use our body language to help us to speaking to other people.
It is normal to speak before thinking but we can prevent this by thinking about what we want to say. I suppose that we have to be patient because we live fast and we think too fast.
Generally speaking, communication is really important in our life because it is the basis in our society.

  3. I think that communication skills are one of the most important skills in our time. You need them at school, at work, at your free time almost everywhere. In our times it is essential to improve our skills to communicate and everywhere we can find a lot of useful information how to do this. Thanks to improving this skill we can gain advantage above other people, because from normal conversation we can gain more information.

If you want to improve your communication skills, you should definitely focus on improving your ability to control your body language and ability to read others body languages, because I have heard that by non-verbal communication like body-language, behavior, voice tone etc. we send around 93% of information and this is huge %.

  4. When we communicate to each other, we should mind one's words; wide vocabulary could help us in communication. Polish language is very extensive, we have many different words, but I saw we use only little part of them. Well, it's good to read books :)

Another issue: except speaking, we are also listeners. I think people sometimes forget about it. We definitely have problem with concentration on mate's message, and I don't know what is a cause of that. We should be good listeners, not only speakers.

  5. Communication skills are very important in our life. We meet other people everyday and have to converse with them. However thinking before talk something it's pretty weird. It's look very artificial. I know that sometimes we should think what we want to say in order to i.e avoid issues. Good tip: don't exaggerate.

  7. I'm not sure how to answer the first question as I never pondered about our communication abilities for longer than needed. I take it for granted, something absolutely common. It's obviously a very important part of our society, it's like glue that holds everything in one piece. I do agree, that it's a very interesting quality of humans, especially when you consider all the languages that exist around the world, and the way they intertwine and influence each other. I personally love to explore the origins of words, and how their meaning changed over time affected by people and environment they lived in. But that's a bit off-topic. :)

Thinking before saying something is a pretty important skill, but let's not overdo it. Thinking too much can keep one from expressing their feelings and objections even when they actually should express them.

  8. Personally, I never had problems with thinking before speaking. I let the reason and not emotions guide me. I know it's easy to hurt someone with uncautious comment. I think it's really important to control what you say.

As to communication in general, I often think about it, as it's a really interesting example of evolution of intelligent species. Of course, it's crucial in forming a efficiently working society. One more reason to learn to use it wisely :)

I really like first part of your statement. However If terms of the second part: I mean that sometimes without thinking you can hurt someone by mistake. It's pun, you know.

Very interesting point of view. I like your last sentence. I haven't heard before that by non-verbal communication like body-language, behavior, voice tone etc. we send around 93% of information. This is something new for me. Thanks :)

  12. My strategy is simple, I try not to talk about subjects that I am not familiar with, but if I have to, I just say that it is only my opinion and I do not know any facts about it. After that people know that I can make a mistake in my speech but they will not do anything about it.

  13. Nowadays communication is getting easier than it was some years ago. In one minute we can talk with our friends face to face and in the same time we can send message via our smartphone to someone on the other side of globe. Writing messages prevents us from speaking before thinking. We usually spend more time thinking what we want to send.

  14. Thank you all for your comments.
    I like your opinions.
Tomasz Gelo: It's interesting what you said about online interview. It's true that we usually spend more time thinking what we want to send. But with this all the most important and mysterious is about face to face conversation.

  15. To be honest it's pretty obvious, that before talking about something, we should know what we want to say.
We should also think about a language, which we are going to use - for example we might use technical
language(which is clear for us) to describe some issue, but firsly we will have to think, if our
partner understand that. We should also avoid situation, when we don't know what are we going to say in
next few seconds - is there anyone here, who hadn't such situation during the exam?:)

  16. This topic is strange. Each person is different, if someone says, sooner or later recklessly bear the consequences and learn appropriate behavior.

  17. The ability of speaking and listening to what others say is one of the biggest abilities we could get. Therefore, we should use it in a right way. Sometimes it worth to think twice before saying something because by our words we can hurt other people. Being in contact with other people is very important because no one would like to live in solitude.

  18. 1. What do you think about human communication?
It's tough. Even though we are very social beings, we do not know how to hold a conversation. We have to learn this useful skill.
    2. Do you know any methods how to learn to think before saying something?
Technically speaking, we think before we speak. But sometimes it comes in packages that we do not control 100%.
    3. Do you think before about how important is communication?
What? I think You might have ... a word. Like I've said, I always think before I say something, but there are situations where I do not control everything I say. Sometimes it appears as a very natural thing, sometimes, it looks just weird.

  19. Human communicating system is the best on the planet. We communicate through gestures, we talk, we have a wide range of facial expressions. Undoubtedly, human communication is the most perfect of all creatures' on the Earth. Most of our thoughts can be expressed through human language. I think it's absolutely amazing!
Usually when I'm not furious I manage to weigh my words. I don't think it's hard to do so. Just try to control yourself and think about everything you do.
Yes I have thought about the importance of communication. It's really significant to clarify your thoughts. Most of misunderstandings are caused by words put obscurely.
