Week 8: [24.11 - 30.11.14] How to eat healthily?

Healthy eating has been getting  more popular recently. There is a lot of food with ‘eco’ label, but this kind of food is very expensive. Many people want to eat healthy, but they have not enough money to hold such a diet. For example, spelled flour is several times more expensive than wheat flour, however the price of spelt is lower than the price of flour on the market.

A lot of dieticians recommend products that are healthy for us and more expensive than ‘normal food’. Why is it so? Probably because healthy food need  special certificates and the production  methods of this kind of food are very expensive. However, do we need to buy food with special ‘eco’ label? I do not think so.

On the market there are a lot of products that are healthy without a special label. We only need to just follow certain rules like the elimination of sugar and saturated fats from our diet to be more healthy, drink a lot of water , eat more vegetables, eliminate salt and also try to eat only unprocessed products.

There are many materials online how to eat healthy.  You don’t have to buy food from special eco stands because adequate food  you can find in any grocery. It may be cheaper than eating fast foods and food with unnecessary certificates.

Questions:
1.       Do you pay attention to what you eat?
2.       What is your favorite healthy dish?

  1. I pay atention to what I eat. I always check what is on product labes and I try to avoid to much sweets and sugar.
As a student I live fast I can't avoid junk food such as KFC or MCDonald's but I eat in those places really rare because I don't feel very well after those meal and I only eat when I'm really hungry and don't have any food made by me around.

I don't any favorite dish but I have my favorite healthy cocktail which is banana milkshake. It tase soo good and sweat that I don't have to eat sweets and I can prepare it myself at home :)

  2. Some time ago when I was on a diet I search through all possible diets, exercise programs and dietitians. From my own experience I know how hard it is for me to plan whole day with 5 dishes per day. The preparation of all meals take a lot of time. The most problematic is to ingestion daily dose of nutritional values.

The rules of the nutrition pyramid are very simple for me. The most important in my opinion are small but often portions of food. Nevertheless eating slowly and drinking only water instead of colorful drinks as well as avoiding dinners after 6 p.m. are hard to adherence.

I do also have problems with diversifying meals. I prefer more meals that are easy and fast to prepare instead of rich flavored but time consuming. However despite of all difficulties and renunciations we should definitely keep track of daily nutritions.

If I can recommend you something, I really would like to point up how important are allergy tests. For me it was a milestone to find out my problems with sufferance to some ingredient.

  3. Nowadays we can observe a real eco-fever; people buy more and more bio/eco food, because they believe everything labeled "bio" is healthy. Unfortunately, misinformation in that field is vast, and many companies make profit from that.

Have you seen all those advertisements about 'natural' magnesium, or eggs hatched by hens fed with non-GMO fodder? The articles about anti-GMO protests? How many times have you read the ingredients on a product and didn't buy it because it had a list of 'E's, which are considered dangerous chemicals? Sadly, most of these situations are examples of misinformation and manipulation in society.

I strongly recommend you reading an article on RealClearScience (you can also find a similar article in Polish here.) We can learn that 'eco' food also contains pesticides - natural ones instead of artificial ones, but it doesn't make them any less harmful. Natural pesticides are much less effective, so farmers have to use much more of them - which makes them as toxic as the artificial ones.

As to the 'E's, I recommend viewing this picture, which shows the actual ingredients of all-natural banana.

Of course, I'm not saying that ALL bio-labeled food is bad; I'm just really saddened that so many people are easily manipulated by catchy slogans like 'natural means better' and don't make any effort to check if the information spread by advertisements is correct.

  4. I’ve made an effort to eat healthier a few times but I never really got around to do it thoroughly . I try to eat less meat because of “philosophical” reasons but I’ve never ate many vegetables so it’s quite hard to make a balanced diet with things I like. I was a really picky eater as a child I only ate a couple of products but fortunately now I like much more stuff. Anyway mostly because of laziness and that I’ve never really had to lose weight I just eat what I like and don’t care much. Of course it doesn’t mean that I eat at McDonalds every day – actually I don’t even like their hamburgers (in fact I don’t like them at all) and most things that they sell at McDonalds ;) But ooh I could eat spaghetti every day ;) I also love white bread and I don’t see myself ever giving it up just because other kinds are healthier . I always eat a lot of seasonal fruits and I believe that if I’ll just eat normal, homemade food I’ll be fine. In my opinion we can eat everything within reason (besides people who have some special food allergies or really want to lose weight). Of course that’s great that people try be more aware what they put in their bodies. I buy only eggs from free ranged chickens and if I see some less “modified” products I would buy them, but it’s really hard to keep track of everything. And I don’t know If you knew that but only E200-E299 are bad for you. A lot of them are not that bad.

    About E-

Here is a short interview in Polish (sorry) with a doctor that specializes in healthy diets and I found it interesting.

  5. Do I pay attention to what I eat ? I guess I do. But this doesn't mean that I make all the right choices in that matter :) Sometimes I don't have time to prepare a healthy meal, sometimes I don't have money – by this is the smaller concern. As Maciej wrote in his article, buying "eco" labeled products is not necessary. I know you can buy perfectly "eco" fruits and vegetables or good quality meat in the nearest supermarket. It just takes some attention to choose the right products.

Karolina mentioned quite an important thing. Not only what you eat, but also how you eat is crucial. I am aware of the rules like: eat smaller portions but more often, but in everyday life it is really hard to obey them because it conflicts with work or study schedule.

I pay attention what I eat but I'm not totally 'eco'. I rather reduce part of "unhealthy" food to minimum, but time to time everyone eat. Sometimes I don't have any time to prepare some food but I avoid fast foods. Prefer buy some fruits or vegetables in grocery or market and know that will be better choice than i.e KFC.

  7. I think I pay attention to what I eat, but we all know - sometimes it's very easy to forget oneself :)
I try to keep some important rules for example do not melt animal and vegetable fats. All this eco stuff is very expensive, so I don't buy it.
Sometimes I have possibility to eat eggs and meat from country, in the summer period these are the fruits and vegetables. These products are the best and the taste is incomparable!

I don't practise any diet, because I don't have problem with health and weight. It so happens, the way I eat is partly connected with my blood type (0Rh+). I love meat, fishes and sea food, and this should be a base of my nourishment, according to Blood Type Diet.
My favorite healthy dish is roasted trout with lemon and thyme. It's healthy, because there is no extra oil, roasting in foil make fish very aromatic and tasty :)

  8. Yes I pay attention to what I eat. I always read the label on the product with info about it. In my opinion it's really important to pay attention to this especially in our times when almost all products are stuffed with chemistry. Usually I try to choose better products like in case of eggs maybe those with "0" in the first place of number are more expensive than those with "3" but different in taste and quality rewards this price gap. My favorite dish is eggplant with addition chili, chive, onion and tomato.

  9. Usually i do not think how healthy do I eat. In fact my friend says that she would have heart attack if she had diet like me. It wolud be very difficult for me to get rid of unhealthy dishes form my daily diet. Maybe it is not good for me but I feel good right now so I do not care.

  10. I turn my attention to what I eat. It is very important to me. Always when I'm on shopping I check the products. Unfortunately, many products contain "harmful" substances and the effects of this can be seen after a few years. "We are what we eat".

I always try not to eat in fast food. Never I'm not sure what's in this food. I prefer to cook in home because I'm sure what I eat.

I do not have favorite dishes. I like the new dishes I like to experiment. Always have to be good products.

  11. I really don't bother looking what i eat nowadays. First of all i love food. I can eat everything, junk food, organic food, meat, fish, seafoods. I never am selective about what i eat, but it doesn't mean i don't try to balance it.
To balance what i it i don't look any websites, health books or doctors. I just get a feeling that i want to it particular stuff. Like, i never liked tomatoes but now i can't go without am in any sandwiches or salads.
There is also a huge topic about meat. I am meat lover and i'll never go away from tasty chunk, but i also don't look for eating for whole week. Coming from a place were meat was still fresh after you bought it, i know that what we now it should be mixed with other components like vegetables. Or better swap meat with fishes atleast 3 days a week.
It's really absurd for me now that people try to eat healthier and yet all food that we can buy now is on same level. So instead of picking i prefer to mix my food palate every month or so.
It never failed me and i hope it will stay that way.

  12. If I could I will eat fast-foods everyday. I love pizzas, hamburgers and other unhealthy dishes. But I know how wrong effects it will be with my body or fettle. I used to prepare dishes by myself, then I know what I eat. Im trying to avoid white bread, hommade cakes or any fats (ex. preparing in deep oil).

My favourite deashes are pastas and pizzas. But I love too dishes with chicken or fishes. Or any salads...
Last time I prepared salad based on arugula, with pasta, sun-dried tomatoes, mozzarella. Delicious!!!

Anyway... if you are active, training sports (I mean swimming, running or something similar) you can eat everything without any pangs of conscience (of course within reason:)).

  13. For me this is a perfect subject because just 3 weeks ago I've changed my diet. Actually, I haven't changed it, I went on a diet because I've never been on one before. Before I ate whatever. I didn't care if it's healthy, at that time the only thing that mattered to me was taste. In addition I was eating irregulary, now I'm paying attention when I'm eating (6 meals per day) and only what I've written down. Certainly, I'm buying products and cooking by myslef. The diet was recommended to me by my personal trainer with who I'm exercising in the gym. Mostly I enjoy my breakfasts which I'm eating at 6:30. Omelette with sugar free jam, fresh tomatoes and water with lemon. Perfect way to start a day!

  14. I pay attention what I eat, but sometimes I like to eat fast food. My everyday diet consists of large amounts of water, vegetables, fruits, dairy and meat. I live in the country so there is no problem with access and purchase healthy and good food at a low price without commission shops.
My favorite healthy dish scrambled eggs with onions prepared by me.

  15. I tried to eat healthy but could not always manage to do so, because to prepare such meal takes a lot of time, which is sometimes limited for me. That is why sometimes it happens that I eat cheap fast food, such as kebab or burger, which are not healthy.
My favorite healthy meal is a salad with vegetables grown in a domestic garden. Such vegetables are definitely eco because they were grown without chemicals.

  16. Ecological food might be better in quality but it doesn't mean healthier diet. My mother is a dietician so I eat rather healthy from the beginnig and actually there is just a few simple rules in diet that is really substantial: moderation in eating, regular meals, eating as many calories as you burn (depending on how often you excersise), variety in diet and combinig right nutritive components (for example you shouldn't eat meat with carbohydrates but carbohydrates are good vegetables).

Of course diet is amazingly personal matter depending even on your blood type.

  17. Nowadays the healthy lifestyle is getting more and more common. I haven’t used the word ‘diet’ on purpose. My opinion is that the people who say that eating healthy and exercising is not for them because it’s expensive/they have no time are just lazy and it tells of their weak character and lack of self-discipline. These days, the days of the Internet, everything is possible – it takes just a few minutes to find some healthy recipes or workouts that don’t require any special equipment. When somebody wants something – he looks for a way, when somebody doesn’t want something, he looks for excuse. So yes, of course – I pay attention for what I’m eating and I’m trying to be as active as possible. The best thing in healthy eating is discovering new tastes so I’ve got no favorite meal, I just love them all .

  18. 1.Do you pay attention to what you eat?
Don't really understand the question. Everyne is paying attention to what they eat - usually comfort food, but everyone makes the decision what they gonna eat. Wheather the choice is ok or not, well that's a different matter
2.What is your favorite healthy dish?
Cheeseburger. With bacon, guacamole, jalapeno, A1, fries and tomato salsa.
Love it. Sometimes if I want to get wild, I'll go with the blue cheese meat patty. Work of gods this thing.
and now, You're making me hungry. I gotta get some dinner.
