I have never driven hitchhiking. I think that is an adventure for people who have a lot of free time and want to experience the adventure of a lifetime. I think it's a good way to explore and leisure activities as well as meeting new people.
Rules that have been presented seem to be reasonable and appropriate for this type of migration. There are no plans, however, checking them in practice.
These rules seems to be trustworthy, but I have never driven by hitchhiking and probably I wont, so it is difficult for me to say much about in this topic. I do not condemn this mean of transport, it is just not for me. I admire people who like this way of transport, I my opinion they are brave.
Like Cezary neither do I tried hitchhiking for a longer trip. I asked once or twice for a short ride when I was on a vacations. For a longer trip, as it is written in the guidelines - you can't have a timetable, which can be difficult for me now. For me hitchhiking is a little bit dangerous, but when you obey the base rules of safety, the risk is not so big. Speaking about golden rules presented, they seem to be helpful, but not comprehensive.
I think that these rules may be helpful. These are tips for people who for the first time will go hitchhiking, you can avoid unnecessary trouble thanks to this tip. I was never going to hitchhike and don’t intend to. I believe that this is a very interesting and economical way to travel but personally I would be afraid and don’t decide on this trip, because I think that this is a dangerous and I never know who to luck. Although I have a friend who goes hitchhiking on vacation and loved it. She planned the route through several states to the point of destination. When she comes back telling me stories of travel. She is brave and she isn’t afraid of such travel, she had one unpleasant situations and had to jump out of the car with a friend, but doesn’t intend to give up hitchhiking trip.
Ha ha, these rules are really funny. Many of them should be obvious for rational people. Most funny for me is “don’t be lazy”, why be a lazy creature is principle of traveling for free. I have never reach long distance by thumbing, sometimes accidentally someone offer me a ride when I was walking along the road, many times someone asked for directions and I offer to show him. My high school German teacher told me that in Germany during holiday youth regularly travels hitchhiking and it is no wonder, apparently there are even special stops for hitchhikers. For little groups of young people (2 or 3) it is good idea, but I think that for one person especially young girl it is rather risky.
I've been hitchhiking twice so far, and I got to say, it is great adventure. In my case, it goes with a feeling of freedom - only you, your luggage and nothing more disturbes your mind, as you cant even scheudle your day, because you never know how long will your trip last. You never who is going to stop and pick you up. Some people are weird, but it is fun to meet them, and you wont porbably met them again, so you can talk with them about anything you wont (except religion and politics, as it may lead to set you down at the road). I dont have much ocasions to hitchhike, plus it isnt now as popular as it was before, now people take hitchhikers reluctantly. I think thoes rules are usefull, but as for me thoes are obvious.
Go teach your grandmother to suck eggs! I was hitchhiking before author of this text was even born. (Or very soon afterwards) I have traveled the lenght and breadth of Europe some 20 years ago and I tell you... that was something! I had almost no money on me and...and I spend lovely evening on the top of the church hill in Peillon village (one of vilage-perche's - eagle nest villages of South France. If you have never seen one - I definitely recommend - it stays with you forever) I was straying in Rome Catacombs, having holy mass in Vatican Gardens with pope John Paul II (that was really great I even got pictures - we were picked by bus of Polish pilgrims and 2 open-hearted, and somewhat crazy nuns (but in the most positive way) decided to take us with them to Vatican city and Rome). I was drinking cold wine when looking as evening sun paints colours on Massiff Central in the same (I want to believe) place Cezanne did. I was sitting on Avignon bridge looking at Street theater performances during theater festival d'Avignon. And I was sleeping on Cote d'Azur and Portugal beach. On Lisbon city square and numberless camping sites. I can talk about it all night long. And I agree with Cezary, you must have all the time of the world to hitchhike. Otherwise it does not taste that good. And all those words of wisdom are generally true, I have my own experience though and would add. Avoid putting your backpacks in the car trunk - 2 times drivers left with ours. First time he returned after few second seeing us screaming and waving in the rear-view mirror, but the second time he found us after about 2 hours... totally depressed. But at least he felt guilty enough to take us for a nice dinner afterwards. And take your girlfriend/boyfriend with you -it is safer, more fun and people trust couples much more then singles or same sex pairs.
No, I have never tried this means of transport as I did not have to, i.e. I always think of something else than hitchhiking when it comes to displacing as I actually prefer being certain that I will get somewhere on time. Nevertheless I think hitchhiking very interesting experience. You can get somewhere for free, meet nice people etc. Obviously there is also a risk that you might get killed, raped, sold etc. but that can happen to you in every circumstances, not only when you decide to try hitchhiking. The rules that you mentioned are very helpful. What I think very important is not to travel alone. When you have someone with you, it’s always much less dangerous. And I agree with what you said, that hitchhiking might be dangerous for drivers. This all means that everybody who has something to do with hitchhiking ought to be aware of the fact that there is some risk and they should make as much as possible to make the trip safe. Nevertheless, I think that when you take the risk and make a decision to try hitchhiking, it might turn out to be a very enriching experience.
I have never been hitchhiking and honestly I do not really want to. Although I agree that hitchhiking can be a great experience and you can meet a lot of people during those trips, it is not for me since I will be too scared to hitchhike especially when I will be alone.
I have many friends who traveled in Europe in this way and they love those trips. I am a little jealous when they tell me about their hitchhiking trips and experiences. Maybe in the future I will try to do it, but only with my boyfriend or friends.
