Probably each of you is in some team. Have you ever wondered how this team was created? Or maybe it is still in the creation phase?

As usual, someone created a theory and distribution team for four phases:
  • forming
  • storming
  • norming
  • performing
In the forming phase the team is under construction, people tend to focus on similarities in order to feel better in the group.
During the storming phase members of a team are comfortable enough in the group to express their own point of view and differ from colleagues in order to build a sense of their own individuality.

In the norming phase a team establishes their norms of cooperation. Despite differences they want to work better and better together. According to the mood of team members in storming phase, there are many differences, during the norming phase team members have tend to overestimate good opinions about themselves and own activities.

In the performing phase the team has a common vision of their goal and is mature enough to prevent conflicts or deal with them on their own. In this phase we can say that the team has been built.

Although the phases are naturally moving from first to fourth, a team can be stuck in one of them for a long time or can move back to one of the previous stages if internal dynamics change, for instance when a new member joins the team.
Do you agree with this distinction? Have you observed any of these steps in your team? If so, at which stage are you?
