Week 12 [11.01-17.01.2016] Quentin Tarantino

Quentin Tarantino

Quentin Tarantino was born in Knoxvill, Tennessee March 27, 1963. Tarantino is an American director and screenwriter, occasionally producer and actor. His mother was very young, she was only 16 when she born Quentin. She was a student of the nursing school. His father was 21 year old law student and aspiring actor. Whole family moved to Los Angeles when he was 2 years old. When he was eight his mother started taking him to watch movies such as Carnal Knowledge (1971) and Deliverance (1972). When he started to work at video store he was obsessed about watching movies. When he was 20 years old he begun acting lessons. He also begun writing scripts and in 1988 he wrote the screenplay for Natural Born Killers.  After that in 1990 he wrote another one called True Romance. Tarantino become famous as a director after releasing his first movie called Reservoire Dogs which has its premier at Sundance Film Festival in 1992. Big success of the movie made that previous screenplays were immediately picked up by Miramax for distribution. After that first success
Tarantino started to write his next screenplay, Pulp Fiction. Pulp Fiction was released in 1994 and as it turned out movie become Tarantino’s biggest success. Pulp Fiction was nominated for seven Academy Awards and it won one for Best original screenplay. As director he also received Golden Globe, a BAFTA award also for screenplay and many other awards around the world including Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. After that success expectations were huge. In 1995 Tarantino decided to direct one fourth of movie Four Room. He made that movie with three of his friends. Every chapter of this film was directed by someone else.  Unfortunately, it received weak reviews… After that in 1996 he starred in movie “From Dusk till Dawn” directed by Robert Rodriguez where he played with George Clooney. Tarantino’s third movie was “Jackie Brown” released year after Rodriguez production. It was an adaptation of novel Rum Punch, cast loaded with stars such as Samuel L. Jackson, Robert De Niro and Bridget Fonda. Already after 6 years of absence Tarantino return to directing and writing with Kill Bill (2003), starring Uma Thurman as a killer woman fighting for revenge. As a sequel Kill Bill 2 was released just after first part. At first Kill Bill was ment to be one movie but with running time of over 4 hours it was split into two movies. After that Tarantino worked with Robert Rodriguez once again. They made two parts of Grindhouse in 2007. One of each directed by Tarantino and second one by Rodriguez. In 2010 he received two more Academy Award nominations.
One for his directorial work and second for original screenplay for Inglourious Basterds (2009). Inglourious Basterds  is a great movie about second World War and plan of assassination of Adolf Hitler starred with actors like Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz. Since he was a child Tarantino loved western movies and he decided to finally make one. Western Django Unchained was released in late 2012. Django, the title character played by Jammie Fox is a slave. He teams up with bounty hunter Dr King Schultz to find his lovely wife who was also a slave. Tarantino’s last movie which will be released January 15, 2016 is also a western and it’s called The Hateful Eight. Cast features frequent Tarantino collaborators such as Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth and Michael Madsen, the film was nominated to Golden Globe in several categories.

For Tarantino, film is an all-consuming passion: "When I'm doing a movie, I'm not doing anything else. It's all about the movie. I don't have a wife. I don't have a kid. Nothing can get in my way ... I've made a choice, so far, to go on this road alone. Because this is my time. This is my time to make movies," he says in the interview.

Some interesting interview with Quentin Tarantino after Django was released:

  1. Have you watched any of Quentin Tarantino movies?
  2. If yes how do you like them? If no go and watch them!

Week 12 [11.01-17.01.2016] Mobile OS Battle

Mobile OS Battle

On the Market there are 3 main OSes. These are: Android, iOS and Windows 10 Mobile. I would like to present you some most interesting features of each OS and generally compare all OS’es.  Choosing a smartphone OS is a bigger choice than you realize and I’m here to help you by comparing most important things in each OS and you will decide which one suits you best.
Google Android
Android is an Open source OS made by Google. As it’s open source many producers make phones based on that OS and it now takes over 50% of market share. It means that you can choose between many models. When you are looking for some low cost phone you will find one with Android for sure. OS offers a lot of customization and personalization for user. On Android you can for example choose launcher (desktop app) and personalize main screen of you phone in way you want. Google Play store offers 1,5 mln apps and most of them are free. One of the biggest problem of Android is market fragmentation. Many producers doesn’t update their phones and that makes a problem. Without updates security patches are not applied and your data could be exposed to malware software. As we know that Android is made by Google the company integrated all of them services in that OS. All apps and services provided by Google are available in your phone. For people using a lot of Google staff it will be a huge advantage. One of the best features in Android is Google Now and Google now on tap. Google Now is a voice assistant integrated into the system. One thing worth to mention that it’s actually working in our country and it understands our language. Now on tap is a feature first time released with latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It scans you screen and catch useful information. For example you are reading email with an address of the restaurant you are meeting you friends tomorrow.  Now on tap will find that info and for example show you the map where this place is or propose you to add that meeting to the calendar.
Apple iOS
iOS is a mobile system installed only on Apple iPhones. It’s a closed platform very well optimized for devices designed especially for that OS. iOS characterizes by very smooth user interface well optimized apps and nice look. iPhones are very well made phones and what is worth to mention Apple doesn’t make chip phones… If you are looking for low-end iPhone you won’t find one, you can just buy an old one. As I mention fragmentation problem in case of Android here this problem doesn’t exists. Every year Apple leaves some devices behind but almost all iPhones operate latest version of OS. It means that newest security patches are released even for an older devices. Apple also provides a lot of services like Google. I mean here for example Mail inboxes, office apps, cloud storage for backup of your photos etc. Ecosystem of apple services is also very big and well made. But if you were using other provider for example Google, integration of those services isn’t that good as in Android. iOS also has it’s own voice assistant called Siri. Probably in the US it’s works great but in Poland, it doesn’t…. Siri doesn’t understand our language so it’s quite useless for us…
Microsoft Windows 10 Mobile
Windows 10 mobile is the youngest OS from our three. Actually is wasn’t yet released entirely. Only phones with these OS are Microsoft Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. Those phones aren’t chip, these are Microsoft flagships and if you want some low-end phone with Windows 10 mobile you must wait for other producers to make one. Windows is also a closed platform what makes phones easier to update. They are more secure that Android phones for sure but if we look at the market Windows phones are not so popular so probability that someone made malware software for that platform is quite low. Windows user interface is based on “Live Tiles”. These are small squares called live because they can update it’s content in background and present it to user. One of the most interesting features implemented in Windows 10 is Continuum. User can plug his phone into small adapter which is connected to a monitor and use a phone as almost full-fledged PC. Windows 10 also provides integration with all Microsoft services like mailbox, Office 365 etc. Windows phones also got its own voice assistant called Cortana. Many people in US says that this is one of the best virtual assistants available on the market. But unfortunately like it was with Siri, Cortana doesn’t work in Poland and doesn’t understand Polish language…

  1. What phone do you have and why did you bought it?
  2. If you would have enough money to buy any of the mobile phones which would you choose?
  3. Do you think that in close future phones will become our personal assistants and we would not be able to leave home without them?

Week 12 [11.01-17.01.2016] Field hockey

Field hockey

Another presentation I wanted to write about, it’s a topic that maybe some of you will find interesting. It’s a very specific branch of hockey family - it came from England and then it spread to Scotland and Netherlands - and still it’s a very popular sport in those countries. The main difference is that people play on a grass field. So this is how it works, players play on the grass field, they wear outfits like football players, just like this:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/57/HOCKEY_ARGENTINA_PAKISTAN.jpg

The other things are protective parts, you need to wear mouth guards - because the ball is very, very hard - it’s heavier and larger than a pool ball. I got hit by that ball and it crushed my ankle, literally crushed it - I was very unlucky back then because I had my protective plates. Another thing which is the hardest to get used to are sticks and actual gameplay.
I will stick to the gameplay at first - players except goalkeepers are the ones who are only allowed to touch the ball and a player’s hand is considered the “part of the stick” and here is the most notable difference - the sticks are only one-sided, you can touch the ball with only one side of the stick - so the basic trick or basic move is  dribbling as shown in the video at:
There is also one thing you can notice, it’s not that easy to play. You need to practice a lot to actually do anything, even basic dribbling and keeping your eyes off the ball is challenging when for example football is easy to play (but hard to master of course), field hockey needs some preparation to actually make anything work.
It’s a very dynamic sport, you run a lot and your body is bend almost all the time, because you need to keep your eyes on the ball, at the same time you need to watch where your teammates are.
Players are allowed to score goals only from a certain place – a shooting circle, when they are out of the circle and even manage to score the goal, it doesn’t count as one. This is the sport which invented the expression of ‘hockey castle’ - when in offensive, the essential thing is to work out your way through the opponents’ defense via teamwork and passing the ball.
So these are generally the very basic rules of field hockey - it’s very teamwork oriented and relies on finding weaknesses in your opponent team and getting the advantage of it.

Sticks are essential to start your adventure with field hockey - there is a wide selection of sticks - they are generally made of wood, fiber glass, or even kevlar. What makes it even more interesting, sticks can have different weight, it depends on personal preferences and materials used to make them. For a  taller person there are sticks adjusted to their height.
Fun fact: In Netherlands a very good stick is made of kevlar and costs the same as 1 kg of meat.

I picked this topic because of the uniqueness of that discipline - it’s different from other  hockey branches. It’s very exhausting but very satisfying overall and I picked it also because women find it very entertaining, there are a lot of female teams in the Netherland or in U.S.A. - so maybe some of you will find it at least worth trying :)

So I have some questions for you to answer:
1.      Do you find it at least worth trying ? Why yes, why not ?
2.      Did you know that sport at all ? If yes, say something more about it :)
3.      Do you feel it’s a dangerous sport after what I have said about my crushed ankle ? Does it make you feel less comfortable.

Week 12 [11.01-17.01.2016] Darwin Awards

Darwin awards

Darwin awards I think is a known topic to all of you, but it’s always interesting because as it turns out there is always a new history of astonishing stupidity of human beings. There is a ‘very funny’ (if you can say that death is funny) background and genesis of Darwin awards so I will try to bring it closer to you. The presentation will be kept more in a form of “did you know” facts about Darwin awards.

So, the first thing, why is it called ‘Darwin awards’ ?
Because of the Darwin’s theory of natural selection. It’s more like a black humour. People dying in a very amusing ways are people who ‘take the ultimate sacrifice’ and remove their genes from a general gene pool and protect us so the accident will never happen again. Anyway of course there is no genetic differences between them and the rest  of us.

How famous is this ? Can I vote somewhere ?
The Darwin awards thing has grown into a website and a series of books started by Wendy Northcut. You can buy them at a better bookshop - it’s worth it, believe me. Check out the website:
http://www.darwinawards.com/darwin/ - the link is straight to documented and confirmed cases of amusing deaths. Go ahead and check them out, maybe you will find something funny ? :)
Actually, you can vote for it - you can vote for the best ones for example there is a ranking for 2014 -
http://darwinawards.com/darwin/darwin2014.html

Ok, but these stories could be fabricated right ? Is it somehow checked if the stories are real ?
Yes, it’s one of criterion of how someone can be (post-mortem) nominated for a Darwin award - story needs to be checked. It needs to be documented by a reliable source: a newspaper, television reports, witnesses. Because there is a lot of incoming emails containing only fiction. Of course the fiction is disqualified but the ‘best ones’ are placed in the urban legends section. Due to the fact that in early times stories were not checked if they are true, they could be fictional and are still treated as a regular Darwin awards.

What are the other criterion then ?
So here is the most interesting fact for me, I didn’t know that  a nominee must be dead or at least sterile, here is the quote for it to be more specific:
If the person were unable to reproduce when stranded on a deserted island with a fertile member of the opposite sex, he or she would be considered sterile.
Another thing is that a nominee’s stupidity must be unique/sensational because the whole award is intended to be funny. One example I can think of is a case of two girls getting high by gas from lighters. After that they thought it’s a good idea to smoke a cigarette :).
As mentioned in the example above, a nominee must cause his/her own demise: Killing a friend with a hand grenade would not be eligible, but killing oneself while manufacturing a homemade chimney-cleaning device from a grenade would be eligible.
Maturity - so your nominee must be at least past legal driving age and must be free of mental defects. I think it’s the most obvious one - Darwin award is intended to be funny, when somebody is mentally ill it’s sad or just ‘not right’ to think that it is funny.

I don’t really want to insert here Darwin’s most notable awards because you can find them online , so I will give you some questions to answer, think about them:
1.      Are those stories funny to you ? Do you find it amusing somehow, in that strange way that after reading a story you are glad that you are not that silly ?
2.      Do you consider death funny ? It’s an open question, feel free to ‘go deep’ here.
3.      I want to encourage you to find something, so tell me what your favourite story is or tell us what you found most astonishing in that particular story.

Week 12 [11.01-17.01.2016] Netflix

Netflix is a video-rental  website, which is the biggest in the world. It is available over the world, expect the Republic of China, North Korea and Syria. It was created by Reed Hastings in 1997 in Los Angeles. What is more, before creating Netflix, he was selling hoovers. In USA, Netflix has 36%  of  the video market. Everyone thought that Netflix would collapse in a short period of time. The decision to start operating in Poland was taken in June 2015. It shows us that the company is evolving.

Netflix owes its  popularity to its approach to the matter. Inter alia, other suppliers release one episode every second weeks, but Netflix releases the whole season. In Poland, Netflix neglected a language issue, but I think it's a matter of time.
"House of Cards" is the one of many series having been made by Netflix. This series is a kind of political drama based on Michael Dobbs's novel. This is about a politician, Frank Underwood, who  is planning his revenge on the president. One season has got 13 episodes, and one episode is 40 to 50 minutes long. At this moment Netflix made available three seasons, and the next seasons are being made. This series is very popular over the world.

"Narcos" is the next series made by Netflix. It's about Pablo Escobar, who is a Columbian boss of drug dealers and his problems with law. The Series had its premiere last year on August 28. Then Netflix aired ten episodes. And also this series obtained popularity.

Netflix is just like Spotify, you watch movies a monthly payment.
Spotify gained big approval in Poland. Maybe Netflix will win it too.
Netflix gives three versions - Basic, Standard and Premium. The difference lies in the quality of movies. It costs about 32zł to 48zł a month. This is almost the price for one Blu-Ray CD.
I think that with time Netflix will be equally popular like abroad. Currently Netflix can be a danger for other companies. For example: Vod , upc, r canal +. And that's all because Netflix offers monthly subscriptions instead of  payment for one film.

1. Do you think that Netflix will achieve success in Poland?
2. How do you see the film market in 5 years?
3. Do you think that the price is appropriate for Netflix's services?

Week 12 [11.01-17.01.2016] Witold Pilecki

Each of us thought about his/her own priorities. Some of these prorities are just common. A lot of people want to be rich. The others want to live funnier and more dangerous. But in our times, there are people who have different values.
In the history of Poland there have beenpeople who believed patriotism is the most crucial value in life. . One of them was Witold Pilecki. "I found a joy in myself, coming from the awareness that I want to fight." - he said.

In 1918, Pilecki joined the regular Polish Army and in 1919 took part in the Polish-Soviet War. The outbreak of that war was  because of the dispute between Poland and the Soviet Union. Also the reason was that isthe Soviet Union wanted to take over the whole Europe. In 1921, the treaty of Riga ended the war. But ZSRR didn't give up. In 1939 started the Second World War. Then, Pilecki was an AK soldier. Armia Krajowa (Home Army) was the most important Polish resistance movement in World War II. In February 1942 it was formed from the Army Resistance (Związek Armii Zbrojnej).

In World War II were two kind of concentration camp - Nazi and Soviet. In September, 1940, Pilecki and his company went to Auschwitz (Nazi) of one's own free will, because they had a few goals. They wanted to organized a unit inside the camp. When he was back, he issued a report for AK.

Pilecki participated in the Warsaw Uprising (Powstanie Warszawskie) and he fought in the northern city center as a simple private, without revealing his actual rank. To the end of war he was the Home Army’s soldier.

After the war, Poland was occupied by at ZSRR. Pilecki proceeded to organize his intelligence network. He started to look for old contacts, but his old  friends died. Then Pilecki searched for new people to build a new intelligence network. It wasn't official, without oaths and name.  I think there weren't any soldiers like Pilecki.

In 1947 Pilecki was accused of illegal border crossing, use of forged documents, not enlisting with the military, carrying illegal arms. On 15 May, he was sentenced to death at the Mokotów Prison in Warsaw. Also, now we don't know exactly where Pilecki's grave is. Witold Pilecki loved hishomeland and that's why he died.

1. What do you think about giving your life for some value?

2. Do you imagine a country with politicians who have courage or patriotism like Pilecki?
3. Why so few people  know who Pilecki was?
