Wekk 5: More than sport

Nowadays, on youtube, in TV and other media appears a lot of examples of sports that are a bit showier than regular disciplines. Today, I’m going to show you few examples of sports that I’ve already tried or which I would like to try. Of course most of presented ways of spending time is highly dangerous but in my opining spending whole life without adrenaline provided by such an activities is not complete.
According to my first post on blog (about lifesaving) I want to show you a bit extreme way of rescuing people (which is actually a sport lifesaving discipline). From the perspective of a lifeguard it’s great experience and feeling.
As a curiosity, one of the teams from Poland is specialized in that type of competition despite the fact as we don’t have any boats like that in lifesaving association.
As next (we are still in water environment) I will present you two movies about kitesurfing. This is not only sport, it’s rather style of life. First one shows more advanced version of using combination of board and parachute. Second one is aimed on convincing you that that kind of activity is worth of investment even only for views that we could enjoy in some places.
Another sport good to mention is skiing. Not regular skiing of course, rather something close to flying with skies on feet. Downhill ride on side of mountain or jumping for over a dozen meters height by ramp is reserved for people which are resistant to even short paralysis caused by height/sudden obstacle/unexpected situation (like chasing us avalanche),
Last video is also my personal dream. It’s something called wingsuit flying. Diving without any mechanical components with speed over 200 kilometers per hour has to be incredible experience. Of course it’s not easy to get a chance of jumping from cliff in one-part costume which looks like flying squirrel but totally worth those hours spent on parachute trainings if someone want to feel huge injection of adrenaline and for while get a chance of watching world from perspective of bird.
What do you think about those sports, would you try something like wingsuiting if you had a chance? How about other examples? Any own experiences in extreme sports?

  1. Extreme sports got a massive boost of popularity with the creation of Go Pro Cameras which are technologically advanced and video recordings from those little devices look extremely professional. As people started posting their hobbies and passions on YouTube people discovered new sports. Humans are created in a way where they always seek adrenalin and doing extreme things that other people think are crazy definitely makes them feel good.

  2. Espcially the squirrel kills me. And so many other people.
Those sports are really great! I love skiing. Maybe not like that, in the video, but simple going down the mountain. Again, not to fast (I'm affraid of speed).
I'd love to do some of kitesurfing, looks like fun!
But I wonder, what people with come out with next. Wingsuit flying is fun, still, you can get so excited about flying that you completely forget about the danger.
So, how many ways to kill ourselves will we find?

  3. Dalvia, I think that doesn't work like this. You have to spend plenty of hours on trainings, and "simple" parachuting before first try with wingsuit. If that don't teach you respect for the risks posed by flying there won't be a chance to survive anyway

  4. I've never practiced extreme sports. I prefer football or exercise at the gym. However, in the future, I just want to try to jump with a parachute. In my opinion wingsuiting is a sport for professionals who have experience in jumping with parachutes, not for amateurs.

  5. Everyone needs adrenaline – it is in our nature. First men hunted wild, dangerous animals, and were also attacked by them. We don’t have such problems today, so we have to create them ourselves 

I ski, and when I was younger, I used to jump a lot, which often resulted in broken fingers or ribs…
Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, with age I’m becoming a coward. However, I’m still dreaming about Heli-skiing on Mont Blanc. Have you heard about this? A helicopter flies groups of skiers to the top of the mountain, from which they ski off track all the way down in deep snow!

Przemysław – when I finally go there, I’ll bring a Go Pro Camera with me :D
Yoshi – wingsuit flying seems cool, and these people look like superheroes! Hehe
All sports that combine high speed, height and risk are fascinating to me!

  6. Maria, I'm more fascinated by fact of flying than speed (which is also quite significant). About the idea of Heli-skiing, try to reach that mountain first and than go way down - to achievements in one shot ;)

  7. Extreme sports are quite fascinating - they are getting more and more popular among people of all ages. The extreme sportsmen may be recognized as both brave and partially crazy people - why would they risk their health or life for a few moments of excitement? People need this pump of adrenaline, especially when their lifystyle is well organized and quiet. What is more, the participants of these extreme disciplines often say that the purpose of the undertaking the risk is connected with respect and cheers from others after finishing the challenge.
To practice extreme sports someone has to overcome his own weeknesses and fears, it is not for everyone. But personally I would love to try some of these, although I know that beyond successful extreme achievement lies long hours of hard working. But no pain no gain.

  8. kitesurfing, i really want try it for 2 years, but never can try. it's too expensive:( for your first lesson u should get instructor, and to time when you can really swim alone u must spend some hours with instructor, but i really like windsurfing. Get wind on your sail.... but problems begin when i must come back ;< so i was a little afraid to start swimming near see.

  10. Great topic! :) I love all kind of water sport. For example, wakeboarding is available to swimming in Wilanów. It might not be a very extreme sport but for all :). Adrenaline is addictive, once you try risky things and you're dreaming to repeat this.
I would try wingsuit but it seems a little bit impossible.

  11. Personally, I don’t like watersports so I cannot really relate to the examples from the post. However, I do ski a little bit but rather not in the way that was mentioned in the post ;) I think that extreme sports are not for me; I don’t feel any need to boost my adrenaline levels through such activities. On the other hand, the flying squirrel looks awesome and I might try it someday ;)

  12. Every year in approximately the same part of summer I take the train through Hel Peninsula and see the surfers on my way. It's interesting how kitesurfing "eliminated" windsurfers in few years time. I guessed it's because of the fashion and new trends, but maybe kitesurfing is easier or - on the contrary - gives more adrenaline? No idea. It can be compared to longboarding, which pushes skateboarding off the streets faster than we thought. Fortunately, Segways have not influenced biking that much ; )

I love watching movies about base jumping in particular. This may sound scary, but especially those when something goes terribly wrong. This keeps me away from any extreme sports and gives me enough adrenaline to stay at home. If you want to see yourself how these beautiful movies could end, check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KF214wDC4L8 . Warning: death recorded.

  13. Of course there is always a risk connected to such activities.Kite surfing is also dangerous even when someone is real professional but is trying to do something unusual. I've heard about one guy which killed himself during an attempt to jump over the Hel peninsula (no idea if that story is true).

Still I think that doing something extremal changes life in good way.

Martyna wrote that some disciplines are becoming less popular because of new sports (lets call them more fashionable nowadays). The point is to find own discipline (passion?) and become very good in it. Doesn't matter what and how popular is that

A see this in action and this is extremely fascinating. You can feel like a dolphin. For sure some day I will try this.
Windsuit is awesome. This has so adrenaline rush that I would like to try this. But this sport is dangerous i think. You need to get very high to jump.
Of Course you can use plane but you won't see something like this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CQFYqzyPd0
Guys fly through the forest, houses, rock crevices. This is hot.
I would like to be a cat, i would like to have 9 lifes.

  16. I like new adventures and exploring the unknown, but somehow always steered away from the extreme sports. I believe I like different kinds of new adventures, and somehow feeling like my life is in danger because I'm using a tool that is not exactly super safe is not the kind of adventures I usually prefer ;-)

That said, I want to try bungee jumping or even sky jumping. The last video was cool, it must feel great to fly like this, but still it's not something I can see myself trying anytime soon. Maybe when I'm old and decide I don't have much life in front of me left anyway, I'd give it a shot ;-)

  17. Extreme sports are so cool. You have to be very care full while doing them, but you get a lot of fun in return!

I love windsurfing and snowboarding. I do it whenever I have the opportunity. It;s very thirilling.

I have to do some advertisement. My sister - Asia Litwin - is a professional kiteboarder. You must check her website and facebook page:D

SHE IS THE BEST SHE WAS EUROPEAN CHAMPION AND VICE WORLD CHAMPION:)

    Here are the linkshttp://vimeo.com/38838362

This is a video of her during kitesurfing...

And here are some other links:
    https://www.facebook.com/pages/Joanna-Asia-Litwin/203309053054879?fref=ts

    http://asialitwin.com/

Having a proseffional sportman at home I know how much effort she must make to peform on the water the way she does.

Keep your fingers crossed for her - soon she will be taking part in another competition. She is only 19 years old! Can you imagine. And she always compete with seniors...

As for me I have never learned how to kite - maybe it is because Asia took away all the talent for it:P

But they say it is quite easy, it takes about few days to do basic kitesurfing.

Back to the windsurf - If you are interested in it there is a nice event in Warsaw connected with it...

  18. Never had a chance to try any extreme sport. However when looking at those videos it make me really try to do so. I take a lot of courage to jump from the cliff into the canyon and a lot of experience in air maneuvers. I can only imagine how do they felt when they jumped for the first time ever. However this exciting sport is very dangerous, there is no place for mistake or accidental failure. I admire people who do this.
